What use is the Coca leaf, other than for refinement into Cocaine?
The Coca leaf has been used by Andean peoples for thousands of years in both religious and medicinal avenues. The leaves were used as offerings to Viracocha during the solstices (winter and summer). There is said to be 17 enzymes within the coca leaf which combine when steeped or chewed. It can ward off hunger, thirst, sleep and altitude sickness. If you ever travel to anywhere high in the Andes, you will often be greeted with a cup of coca tea to assist in your adjustments to the altitude. The bigwigs in many of the Andean countries, Peru specifically, wish to ban the growing of the coca leaf in the hopes of slowing down the drug trade.
