At the Las Vegas Acadamy, we have something called 'Juries,' which are our semester exam. We sometimes get seated on them as well.

A jury is when you pick a piece at the beginning of the semester, and work on it until the end of the sememster when you play it for the whole class, sans music. The teacher and all the specialized teachers (specific for bass, specific for cello, etc) grade you.

This year I'm playing Violin Concert No. 23 in G Major, by Viotti. It's not that hard, but it's mine. xp
I'm just curious if any other schools have that policy, and if anyone has any horror stories to share. xd I personally hate juries, because I'm somewhere in the middle of my orchestra and I always get nervous.

With me here it's the same.
Really, I tremble when I get in front of all those people. sweatdrop

Me too. My director says to put antiperspirant on your hands if you get nervous... but no one has tried that yet. xp

I do have a few horror stories to share. Here's one:
Last year was my first jury, as a freshman. The first semester I practiced really hard the day of my jury, and my shoulders hurt when I got up in front of everyone. I started to play... and my first note made that evil screeching sound that you get on the E string when you barely hit it. My heart nearly stopped, and I dropped my bow. It was awful! stressed But I'm not that bad at juries any more. xd

A lot of you seem to be stuck doing these jury things, considereing I've never heard of them before now. Our seating test is based on scales, and our grade is on participation and how much we've improved over the semester over here.

That sound almost made me faint once. scream
But now I got my violin from the repair, and I think it should be nice now, since the problem was the easel. 3nodding

We get taped tests...she picks our hardest song from what we're playing for the concert and a scale (some times selections differ from between instruments) and we must tape our selves on cassette at home playing the whole song and the scale(s). The two best scores get first and second chair, and the rest are "randomly" placed. rolleyes Yeah the song is 50% of the score and the song is another 50%, and there are sub scoreing groups withing those two. (Like, tone is 20% of the song and etc.)
And we dont put our names on the cassettes but rather on a different piece of paper and simply number the cassettes, so she cant just go "Oh, Johnny's tape, lets just give him a 50...."
Oh, and it's due this Tuesday for me. Monday's a holiday... biggrin

My jury was last Monday. Actually, it was Tuesday, but that's beside the point. I didn't fail, but my friend who was adding the scores wouldn't tell me what I got, so I think it was a bad grade... gonk

We sometimes have seating tests with the songs from our concerts, but the semester jury has to be a solo written specifically for our instrument. Basically, at the beginning of the semester you/ your private teacher choose a really hard song. Then you work on it for the entire semester, and perform it for the class as part of your exam.

In our school, only gr.12 music students need to do a end of semester recital. But I have my private lesson teacher's recital to do anyways stressed

viotti 23? biggrin I've played that one before!! The cadnezas are a horror tho razz I spent 2 weeks stretching my hand for the 11ths! I think viotti's 22nd is much better, musically, more interesting and easier to memorize.

All grades have to do it at my school. Luckily I only had to memorize the first movement, which isn't very hard. It's fun to play though! But my hand position is ghastly when I'm nervous; when I was in sixth grade my teacher kept telling people to get their thumbs under.
I actually was right, but I assumed she was talking to me, and for the next three years I played with my thumb so far under the neck that it was on the other side, where my other fingers are supposed to be. I fixed the problem, but I tend to go back to it when I'm nervous, and so I didn't get a very good grade. sad

Which edition were you playing?
PostPosted: Fri Jan 14, 2005 5:15 pm

Hmm. Well at my school seniors get to do Senior Solos...But its a priviledge..not a...dreaded thing. YOu pick a song and you work on it (pick it whenever you want, when you're ajunior, senior..freshman razz ) and then you perform it at the last concert, which is why as a full orchestra we only have 3 main songs we're playing. Got lots of seniors ^_^. O_O DEAR god I havent picked a song yet... domokun domokun domokun

I'm not entirely sure which edition I was playing... Most of it is written in Bulgarian, because my teacher is from there. I can basically tell what it says, but I'm not quite sure of the specifics. sweatdrop

The entire first page of the piano score goes as follows:

Quote:

            ~Edition Peters~
              Nr. 1100 b
        VIOTTI
Violinkonzert Nr. 23
         mit Kadenzen
       G dur~ G major ~ sol majeur

       (Davisson)

I'm not sure if it's Edition Peters, or Edition No. 1100b. redface
