Earthpaw blinked a few times and yawned. The sun was just starting to filter through the top of the apprentice den. She stretched before remembering why she wanted to wake so early. Today is my first day of training! She quietly stepped around the other sleeping apprentices and left the den. A few cats were in the center of camp, but it seemed that many were still asleep. After scanning the cats, looking for her mentor, she trotted over to the warriors den and sat right outside the entrance.

Fernpelt walked out of the warriors den and in surprise she saw Earthpaw there waiting for her. She purred and twitched her tail indicating for her to follow she walked on slowly to the river. Today would be the day she taught Earthpaw how to fish.

Earthpaw jumped to her feet and followed Fernpelt. Once the two of them had put a little distance between the other cats, Earthpaw looked up at the green she-cat. "What are we going to do today, Fernpelt?"

Fernpelt purred as she aske the question. "I'm going to teach you how to fish. But first, do you want to try right away or have me show you how to do it again?" Fernpelt's ears twitched in anticipation at the thought of teaching her first apprentice.

"Fishing? Now I can finally be able to catch those things out of the water!" She looked toward the water eagerly. "You can show me again if you want. It was really cool last time!" She was nearly jumping in excitement of her first lesson.

Fernpelt walked in front of the river and waited for the silver flash of a fish swam near.
Several moments later the plump silver shadow of a fish popped up and she quickly plunged her paw in and scooped up the fish. When it was on the ground she gave it a bite and killed it.

"That was amazing! I want to try!" She crouched at the edge of the water, looking for any silver shapes. Earthpaw didn't realize it, but her shadow was right over the water. After a few moments she looked to Fernpelt. "I don't see any yet."

Fernpelt let out a mrrow of amusement. "You left your shadow on the surface of the water, no fish will come if they see your shadow." She purred. It was quite funny, when she first started training she made the exact same mistake.

"I did?" Earthpaw asked before noticing her shadow. She crouched down even lower, and it moved off of the water. A few moments passed, and a silver blur in the water moved toward the surface. Her tail twitched, and she threw her paw toward the fish. It got stuck in a claw for just a moment before squirming out of her grip. She lifted her dripping paw out of the water. "It got away!"

Fernpelt glanced as the fish got away. "it doesn't matter if you tried your best." She flicked her tail around glancing at the bright sun. "Why don't you give it another go?"

"All right!" she said brightly. Earthpaw crouched again by the water and double checked to make sure her shadow was in a safe position. Soon enough, another silvery shape came to the surface. She flung her paw toward it and managed to fling it out of the water. It landed right by the edge, flopping, so she desperately pounced on it to hold it down. "I got it!" she cried as it wriggled under her paws.

"Good job!" Fernpelt purred in delight. Her brown apprentice showed a lot of promise. "You can eat it if you want." She offered, knowing that she probably wanted to eat.

Earthpaw licked her lips in excitement for eating her first catch, but she paused. "I'll eat if you eat too, Fernpelt. I don't think it would be very fair for you to not be able to eat with me eating a whole fish." Her fish, now unmoving, was lying by Earthpaw's feet.

Fernpelt stared at her apprentice with pride in her eyes. "It's Ok, we warriors have to wait for the clan to be fed before ourselves. But, this is special for you because it is your first catch." She mewed repeating what she herslef had learned in the past with her mentor, Stonestream.

"Alright!" Her eyes were bright with excitement. She hungerly began nibbling on the fish...her fish! After it was eaten, she looked back to her mentor. "I think that was the best fish I ever tasted!"
