no real need to double post, i'll fix it in a sec..
alright, for the ds version, i cannot say ive real found a proven way... turnip trade is harder to get right in the ds version. what i do is save up alot of money, put it in the bank, fast foward time, and collect all the interest i get for keeping it in the bank for x amount of months

I've only played the DS version twice on my friend's DS...soo, I don't have MUCH expirence...
But I nkow that:
There are TONS of ways on collecting bells. Some faster then others. You can go around your town and hit rocks randomly, find a good rock and there should be some good bells. Keep hitting that rock and you should come up with a good lump of money.
Digging randomly, you can get 100 bells in random spots.
Fishing and bug-catching always works. Probally the most relaxing and easiest thing of animal crossing.
Even shell-collecting works well. Shells are more then what they seem.

Sell gyroids.
check the town dumpster
and the lost and found is a good idea.
plant and sell fruits(especially ones from out of town) and coconuts

What I do is get foreign fruit, make an orchard, and every 2 days I pick the fruit and sell. They're 500 bells each, that really adds up.

Step one: Shake Fruit Trees, fill your inventory with fruit and sell it to Nook as many times as you can (as in until all the trees are bare). You can get about 7500 from this, or maybe more!
Step two: Use this money to buy whatever tools Nook is offering. The best one he can have for you is the Fishing Rod, especially in the Winter when there aren't many bugs.
Step three: Go fish crazy! While you are fishing, if Nook had the Slingshot and you bought it, shoot at flying gifts. Sometimes they have a high retail price.
Step four: After a few days, do the fruit thing again. If you ever see a CoConut on the beach, plant it in the grassy area right near the beach, NOT IN THE WATER. Coconuts sell for 500 instead of 100, and that makes them good.
Step five: Keep buying the new tools until you have all of them (Rod, Net, Watering Can, Slingshot, Shovel)
Step six: Use your loaded up inventory and fish, catch bugs, dig up the little X marks of the ground, collect seashells... Anything that can be sold!
Step seven: If you have the axe, start chopping down normal trees and replacing them with fruit trees. If possible, go to a friend's town and take some of their fruit (if it is different from yours). Like Coconuts, foreign fruit sells for 500.

I mean..EVERYTHING!!..Got a shirt you don't wear?..SELL IT!..find a shell?...SELL IT!...Catch a fish already in your museum?..That's right, SELL IT!...Sell Sell Sell!!..You'll be Tom Nooks #1 Customer!
and you'll have tons of bells...
also, do lots of favors for neighbors and they'll reward you with free stuff...don't like what they give you??...You got it...Sell It!!..

What you do is buy some paper. Write a decent letter to one of your villagers and attach a piece of your native fruit to it. Sent it and the next day, there's a chance that they will write back, sending you a foreign fruit as a present. They might give you furniture though, so it's not 100%.
like everyone else said, plant them, and they'll sell for 500 Bells.

i'm doing better. i have a ton of forgin fruits and i chopped down the ever greens i'm going 2 chop all peach trees and replace w/ others

hehe, once I was saving up to get this 1000000 bell worth crown and this is what i did...
1. collect all the shells near the sea.
2. collect every single friut found and sell it to Tom Nook
3. sell some valuble stuff to Tom Nook agian.
4. give every single bell for the crown... In your case, mortgage...
... yep gotta make sacrafices
