So, a little backstory first. Last summer I didn't play much, but towards the end of August I picked up the Fluter again and started practicing random scales in preparation for the oncoming schoolyear. But, there was some mysterious brown/black stuff all over different (hard to clean) areas of my flute. I had to go in with a moist q-tip and clean it off.
Now, my question is; Was that mold, or some tarnish? And how do I get it to stop coming back?

It's probably tarnish (I hope), just get a polishing cloth and clean it off. Not sure how to keep it from coming back though, probably just clean your flute more often. Mine used to have some on the mouthpiece but it dissappeared when I started polishing it more often.

wow, you guys must not clean your flute. I've never seen anything like that on my flute. Once you start to see a different color other than silver (or whatever your flute might be) than thats pretty bad

The black stuff is tarnish. ( I have fun taking my flute out during free days in chorus and freaking my friends out with it. They think I have black spit!) The brown stuff is mold. If you do not clean your flute reguraly and clean it before you do not play for long periods of time than you are going to have mold becuase of your spit built up inside it. The food and ducky stuff in your spit grows mold. I have no idea how to keep it away, but keep cleaning and playing and it shall be vanquished! I hope...

If it's on the keys, it's probably tarnish. I don't play the flute, I play sax, but I have a bit of tarnish on keys I usually rest my hand on (they're a little brown, and feel rough). I've seen flutes with tarnish, and it basically looks the same.

its drie spit! so u just need a little fluy thing to go in side and dry it out after u play. its a simple problem that u can fix. also i recommend seeing someone about ur pads. make sure u don't get an amiture. i've taken classes and its not easy to do that and u want to make sure they don't dent ur flute in the prosece. i do all my repairs myself because of the dorks were i live. make sure u know what ur doing is the # 1 thing here. mrgreen

Tarnish. Dude, clean your flute more often even if you're not playing it.
