It'll depend on the school. However, in general, high school language classes aren't very intense, and if you want to seriously learn the language, you'll have to study beyond that. But nevertheless, I think it would be enjoyable, and if you do decide to continue, it'll give you a good basis. smile

[Lives in Canada by the way] My high school doesn't have classes for Japanese. The only language classes are French, Spanish, and German. They have classes for people who speak Japanese though.

My school began offering Japanese classes last year, this year they've added Japanese 2, which I'll be taking come Wednesday. Last year in Japanese 1 I had a lot of fun. We went through the hiragana, learned the basics, and learned the culture. We even got to make Japanese food on different occasions (onigiri=AWESOME!). But that was just my class, it's probably different from the class at your school. You'll never know unless you try. ^_^

I would highly recommend you taking Japanese at your school, it will benifit you in the end. It's very important to take as many formal classes/lessons as you can. Having that structure and order in your Japanese studies is essential. But all in all, you should totally take Japanese at your school if you are truely serious about learning the language.
I wish they had Japanese at my school. I go to a magnet school and we have Chinese,Latin,French, and Spanish. Also, I'm hearing that next year they are going to add new languages, like German.

I'm in Japanese III in my high school, and it's always been one of my favorite classes. I highly recommend it if you're interested in Japan enough to be in the guild. Our school does the Irasshai program which goes really slow, but it's great for those who have trouble with foreign languages and memorization.

I am currently taking Japanese 4 in High School right now. I must say that if you are going to do it, you must keep up with it. It's very important. If you don't, you will lose it. It's one of those languages you just have to keep up with. I wish you luck should you decide to do so, but it is work and it is studying and dedication.
