Since we're all gamers here...What makes a great game a great game? Is it the musical score/soundtrack, the killer graphics/eyecandy, the story behind the TV screen or the gameplay itself?

Sure, one could say that all of these matter. But what matters most to YOU when you're looking for a good game to play?

Well I will list these in the order of importance.

1. Storyline
2. Characters
3. Music
4. Gameplay
5. Graphics

Why I put graphics at the bottom is that I could play a game that had 8-bit graphics. (Which would be an improvement on some of the new games.) As long as the Storyline and everything else I listed was extraordinary. They waste so much of the memory on the discs nowadays for graphics when you could tone them down say like in Disgaea and get a very long game thats enjoyable.

Well thats just my opinion anyways. As you can see I could care less about the graphics in a game.

Graphics do make the game more enjoyable but I have to agree with you that the storyline/characters are the most important part.

Especially in roleplaying games~

Theres lots of important things. I definitely look for good graphics, story, music, etc. But the most important thing for me is the replay value.

Sure its nice to get a game and beat it in one night and not visit it again, but that annoys me. I look for games that I have to spend hours upon hours unlocking every secret and ending. Even if its tedious, it keeps me playing. mrgreen

Replay value is probably my second or third favorite aspect. ^^ If it has an addicting enough feel to it, I'll play it over and over...

I did that with Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I've played the whole game through at least 24 times... xd

Storyline and characters a first, but gameplay is important aswell as bad camera controls can be annoying as all hell...
After that comes Replay value, no game is more fun than a game that has a reason to play again.
Eyecandy and graphics are nice to have, but not a must, I still play NES and Famicon games...
And what I find a big dissapointment is when games are finished before you get to know the game (Portal for instance, very fun, but so short).

XD Bad camera angles are the worst! My Jet Force Gemini game liked to glitch on me and the camera would just sit there and spin around for like fifteen minutes.

It IS hard to make a short game good. The Orphen game for the PS2 is pretty good even though it is short. Luigi's Mansion is also a good short game. ^^

i like games with beautiful graphics but i would defently play games with 8-bit graphics
the storyline should be just as interesting as a good book characters and music can add more effect to certain scenes and gameplay shoul be good or it would be hard to get anywhere

WHOA, story and characters is outweighing gameplay!? What's up with that!?!? eek

Look at Atari games! No characters, no plot, but they still play well!! My order is:

1: Gameplay
2: Storyline/Characters
3: Music/Soundtrack
4: Graphics

I've already explained Gameplay, storyline comes in second. Storyline, although not as major as gameplay, is the thing that gives you the motivation to play it and beat it. You have to hear the same music the whole time you're playing the game, so it had better be good and have variety. Graphics isn't THAT major. Many classics have terrible graphics (Atari, NES, etc.).

I want to also note it depends on the genre of that game we're talking about. Most role-playing games are supposed to "suck you in", means it needs an in-depth storyline/characters (like FF or SMT). But almost any other game should always rely on Gameplay. If it has awesome graphics, a sweet story, beautiful music, but plays terrible, it's not a good game.

Well it must have a good storyline and characters, or else I won't be very interested in it. Of course gameplay is necessary too. Music is nice too have, but if it isn't good enough there's a reason human invented the mute button. And lastly the graphics, I couldn't care less if it's an old one or a new one. Sure life like graphics are nice, but the game itself is what matters. Don't like the graphics? Use your imagination

Here is my line of importance in a game
1.gameplay
1.story/charcters
3.graphics
4.soundtrack

A great game that hits these marks is Devil May Cry 3
The gameplay was addicting and always fresh
The story was pretty strong and funny
The characters, though limited, were very deeply developed
The Graphics were great for a 2005 PS2 game
And the soundtrack well u cant go wrong with metal music for a M-rated game
