Heya, peoples, Leah Tyler, oboeist extroadinaire, here with a marching question. Should I do it? At our high school, we do not have an orchestral band seperate from marching, so if I want to play at all, I have to join marching. But I play oboe. And I have heard that marching is not exactly the easiest thing to do for lazies like me. You have to get up early and work your butt off half a day. But, on the other hand, I have this weird little habit, if I hear music while I am walking, I automatically take a tempo. So I would naturally have a bit of a head start.
So should I go for color guard or play flute or something like that? Or should I just look elsewhere for a good youth orchestra?

Marching band is awesome!! You should definitely go out for it. It will probably/most likely be the most fun you've ever had! You make a lot of friends, you learn a lot (perverted wise) and you get in shape! Since you play oboe, you could try other woodwinds or join the drum line. Or just try an entirely new instrument...like trombone!!! hee hee. But it IS a lot of fun, you should join it and ask your teacher what instrument you should play if you decide to!

I would reccomend marching band to anybody. I had a friend who just learned trombone and join band as a junior and she has changed in a very positive light. Marching band makes you get in shape as well as disciplines you, you may think you're lazy but when marching band comes around you learn to get over it. It's really a positive thing and you make a TON of friends.
Now as far as learning a new instrument, I as an Oboe and Flute player would reccomend that you switch to flute, or maybe even clarinet since they are both vary similar to oboe.

Go for it!!! Haha It does take a lot of leg muscle, but you know... It's worth it. I just say, "don't march with your oboe!" I've heard some horrible stories. I suggest the flute ... because you play basically the same thing. [: But clarinet would me good also, and I'm not only saying that as a clarinetist. Hehe.

Yeah, very few bands march oboes because its actually a life threatening situation considering if you trip and fall, you could choke on your reed or slice the back of your throat. Yum.
Anyways, absolutely go for it, its my favorite part of band and I loved kicking my tail during marching season. Totally go for it, the feeling you have before, during, and after a performance make up for all the hard work - especially if you place or win a competition ^^!
Yes, learn flute (hard to march, upper body wise, marched this for three years), clarinet (supremely easy upper body wise, I marched one year as a clarinet), and I've tried out the sax, it's easier than flute, by far. Flute is seriously the hardest woodwind to march, its awful.

Play an instrument, colorguard isn't worth it. Actually BE a part of the band, and not some little group of flag-twirlers.

Hey, I don't play an instrament but I am in the color guard and am a member of the marching band. All of my closest friends are in marching band and though I don't have any classes in the band room I find myself in there a lot... sweatdrop Anywoo! I loved marching band! It was so much fun and I made so many close friends and i have so many stories from it (This one time, at band camp... xp ) It takes a lot of dedication but well worth it!

i remember i had a hard time making this decision too......because it takes up alot of your summer.......................... but it practically is the fun of my summer! like many people have said it takes alot of dedication to do marching band but it shapes you into a better person in so many ways. I improved my clarinet playing with help from my seniors. 3nodding

I think you should really join marching band. It will be totally worth it. You will make so many new friends and learn a lot of great things. This is my last year in high school so marching band will be gone fr me, unless I go to a college with a marching band. I'm very sad about this. Marching band creates sort of a like a little family at school. Instrument wise I would tell you to either play clarinet or flute. The thing with flute though is that you have to have good upper body strength.
