Next year is going to be my last year doing marching band at my high school crying . I really love band, like LOVE BAND!! So I decided on joining a Drum Corp after marching band ends. The problem is that I only play woodwinds so my friend said "you should try baritone" and I was like "that's a GREAT idea, i've never thought about that." So for all you baritone players, or band gods...
Is baritone that hard? I know your arms get tired quickly from holding it up, but is the actual making music on it hard?
Does switching from a woodwind to brass hinder your woodwind abilities?
What's the difference from a Baritone and Euphonium?

If you play flute, it will take a while to swap to baritone. Not too hard though. I know a girl who swapped from clarinet to euphonium and is already pretty good. A flute player plays with atleast as much air as a baritone or euphonium. This makes it a bit easier for them to switch.
Oh, and marching with a baritone is like marching holding a midget, or small child.

And if you're going to join DCI, start working on your techniques on the baritone! It'll help you out alot! ;D!

I think Baritone is pretty easy, but It's really a matter of opinion. I've never played flute before, so I won't be able to answer your other question. Also, baritone is actually not that heavy, so in that area, you should be ok.

I switched from Flute to Front Ensemble Percussion to be in drum corps. It was a nice jump for me because I can do a variety of things now, marching and percussion. But If you want to march no matter what, then yes, baritone is indeed a good idea. Mello would also be good.

I can't say that switching from flute to baritone will be easy, but it will probably be worth it. If you can play baritone, you can probably do trumpet and mellophone, too. That makes you a much more versatile player on the field, able to adapt to more instruments when they're needed.
I actually switched from trumpet to baritone for this year (which is ending now), and it was a little more than I bargained for, but mostly because of the instrument's weight. Before I knew it, I was the only baritone with my music memorized and the only one really playing out.
Wait a sec, I shouldn't be the only one playing out... oh, bleh, whatever! >.o;
I recommend also learning another brass instrument while you're at it. If you start for a while on trumpet and build up some endurance, baritone will be no problem.

I learned trumpet for Jazz Band, switching from flute/piccolo, and I don't think I've lost too much on flute. Yeah, you have to divide up your practice time, so you won't get better as quickly, but it shouldn't be too difficult to keep up your woodwind chops so long as you still manage to play semi-often. 'Course, I still play piccolo every day in class...
I say go for it! Learning a new instrument is fun! And drum corps are awesome (although they'd be a lot better with flutes/piccolos/clarinets. 3nodding )

WOWZA! Im fully supporting the switch from flute to baritone. I know many people at my school who made this change and they all love it. Being a baritone(2 years)/Euph(1year) marcher, I can tell you it is very rewarding. Yes, it will require alot of effort, but for the chance to be in a corps? That is the ultimate reward. Im actually shooting for the Blue Devils when I get out of High School, its pretty much one of my dreams. If you need any help, I can give you some tips on how to reach your goal! Just PM me.
p.s. WOW i finally found like, the best guild on gaia...so awesome

Switch!
I switched from flute to baritone myself, and it was an extremely rewarding choice. I didn't find it that hard to learn baritone, but it does take some getting used to. Also, tuba and trombone are also quite easy to learn once you've learned baritone. I'm still a rabid flute player, though. Plus, it's easier to play dynamics (in my opinion) on baritone.
