Well, everytime I try to blow a trumpet, it makes a raspy sound or it doesn't come out at all. Help? Also, how do you tongue? blaugh

Okay.
The Rasping sound is probably this: you are not closeing your lip enough.
Try saying the letter "M", and keep it closed at the point of impact. Then try.
Also, tounging is like if you said the word "Dah". Your tounge hits the back of your teeth to make another note.

I agree, that fixing it would be best approached by saying the letter "M." It will make you have a full sound, and make sure to try out with warm slow air, and get faster as you try to go higher. As my band director says all too often, "AIR IS FREE BREATHE GOSH DARN IT!" not quite that nice, but he's a wonderfully smart man. Uhm... And tounging with the word "Dah" can be helpful, but I prefer to use "Tah" for tounging. "Dah" seems to make my articulation go to crap. But yeah. Have fun, and don't depress yourself!

The above suggestions are great for fixing your tone. But when I tongue notes, I tongue the word 'tu'. For me, it made tonguing faster easier, and makes a nice shape in your mouth.
