First of all, what's your budget? And do you know anyone that can tell you some tales of life in Japan, or as a professional fan of the culture? Who there can teach proper Japanese?

Well, so far the club is just starting, so we still have to fundraise and I am currently getting some sponsors. Not really, but thats a great idea! I'll have to ask around though.

I've always wanted to start a Jp culture club myself but never got around to it! If I were you, I'd show a lot of anime/ attempt to have everyone learn and use Japanese, have cooking days and pretty much all of those other things you said! Not to mention japanese history is facinating... maybe reccommend books? heheh I'd probably have ddr matches too... of course, I'd also just start out slow... just let it be a fun thing for people with common interests to meet then maybe try to develop a set schedule that is voted on or something whee wish I could join heheh

I would personally recommend looking around town for any places that may be able to educate you on Japanese culture, especially the parts typically not shown in the media. To truly appreciate a country, you must understand all sides of it's culture.

Make sure you look up when all the major holidays are in Japanese so you can have a mini celebration of them in your club.

I second the holiday suggestion. I know there's some kind of Cherry Blossom Holiday that they get off school for, and there's White Day in March; the Valentine's Day where guys return the favor by gifting girls; since it's the other way around on their Vday.
One of the things my club did back in the day was have Japanese penpals sponsored by a Japanese school. You can try writing to them in Japanese and they can practice their English to you in return. That was fun an often amusing. ^.^

I currently I am the president of a Japanese/Asian club and have lots of ideas~ The key to making a club fun is to have LOTS of hand on stuff. No one likes to sit an listen to a long lesson like class.
Trips -Japanese restraunts (we did sukiyaki) -Karaoke, it is extremely popular in Japan -China Town for Chinese New Year
Crafts -Paper mache Daruma -Obon lanterns -Cell phone charms, we did mice for the new year -Kanji stone keychains, get clay that looks like stones and carve kanji into it -Hinamatsuri dolls -LOTS of origami
Activities -Sports day, Japanese style tug-of-war was the most fun -Cooking days, work with the home-ec teacher for this -Game shows, Japanese game shows are CRAZY, try playing some of the games they do -Trivia, have candy for prizes or just bragging rights
Videos -Movies, but make sure they fit into your school's rules, usually you can get away with NR, which most Japanese films are -Music Videos, this is a great way to teach about Japanese music -Japanese Disney, school appropriate and almost everyone loves it whee -Check youtube for informational videos that are interesting
Our club usuall runs like this, 15min of chat time with Japanese music playing in the background, then officers officially start meeting and everyone sits down and gets quiet. Then we explain the culture behind the project we are doing, ie, if you are doing daruma explain the myth. Then we turn the music back on and let everyone work on thier projects or watch the video. 3nodding
Hope that helps, if you need anything else feel free to PM me.
