You may already know about this, but The Golden Compass, while it will be a watered down version, is based on a series of children's books about killing God (It is the anti-Narnia). Please follow this link, and then pass it on. From what I understand, the hope is to get alot of kids to see the movie - which won't seem too bad - and then get the parents to buy the books (which are a lot worse) for their kids for Christmas.

The quotes from the author sum it all up..... http://snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp

I appreciate this post with a link to Snopes, and I'll tell you why. I have been warned about this movie/books a LOT... but by the same people who told me how evil I was for liking Harry Potter and claimed the books "taught kids spells." Ummm, no. They taught them a few words in Latin. rolleyes So the warnings about Golden Compass have, if not fallen on deaf ears, made me want to READ them more.

However, that gave me a real, impartial source not too. THANKS. mrgreen I only have a zillion books on my to-read list anyway! Hee hee!

Tell me, have those same people ever seen the movie with this in it...

"Salaga-doola, menchika-boola, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. Put them together, and what have you got? Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. Salaga-doola, menchika-boola, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. It will do magic, believe it or not, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo."

What's the difference between Cinderella and Harry Potter? One was a cartoon from 1950, and the other is live action with better graphics......they both have 'witchcraft'......so doesn't that make them both evil? lol people these days...makes me laugh

a lot of ppl are warning about the movie and book maybe we should read it for ourselves. I on the other hand probably won't read it and don't care to hear about it.

i remember telling my friend i was wanting to read the book before i saw the movie and she told me to make sure i had a strong relationship with the lord before i read it (and she's baptist). So that's why she told me that...if someone brings it up I'll tell them about it, but i don't think too many of my friends are actually wanting to see it anyways so i'm not going to tell them about it until they actually say something about it....

It is a very interesting, philisophical and thoughtful book. I have read it and enjoyed it. It did have some controversial stuff, and yes the main plot is about killing God. However, I continued reading because this universe and God and angels and such, are totally fantastic(as in fantasy). So, there you go, I'm tentative about suggesting it, but there you go.

I know someone who said they thought it was actually a very Mormon take on things. They equated the "God" of the story with Satan. I can see that angle but it's not what the author intended at all.

I read "His Dark Materials" about five years ago. I knew nothing other than that it was a popular fantasy book. I love fantasy and have been reading the genre for years. Never has a series left me so emotionally and spiritually bruised. It is an ugly story and one I don't want my children -- or anyone, really -- to read. It didn't make me doubt my relationship with God. It was more like sitting through about 1,500 pages of slander. I came away aching for God. I wanted to smack the author for the terrible things he was saying about my Father.

I think that the golden compass may be interesting but still might be bad. I wouldn't take the risk of hurting myself spiritually by reading it.

That's probably good, better safe right? However, I didn't really connect it at all with our Father, perhaps because the Athority didn't resemble him at all. And, for those of you who have read Narnia as well, di you like both? I've read all of the Narnia's, and loved them so much! I've liked the Golden Compass also, and though they are supposed to be opposites, I suppose it goes to show that Mr. Pullman isn't as successful as he had hoped. I certainly am not a god-hater now.

Right, I dont really think that reading a book could actually make you want to kill god. If it does, how strong of a Mormon could you have been in the first place, really?

Well, I probably won't see it. It's not so much because I'm afraid it'll weaken my testimony or anything. But I am afraid I'll be really angry by the end.

I'm not gonna see it, but thats just cause I think the movie looks extremely lame. And just going off how the movie looks...I would probably think that the books are extremely lame as well. I'm a bit picky when it comes to books lol. (I couldn't stand Eragon...the guy just doesn't write that well...He is almost as bad as JK Rowling XP)

for those people who want to read the book before they judge the book or movie:

MY SISTER AND DAD HAVE BOTH READ THE BOOKS AND THEY BOTH TALK ABOUT HOW THEY GOT A REALLY BAD FEELING WHILE READING THEM AND THEY DON'T WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE

I put taht in all caps so hopefully people will see it.
I feel bad whenever I see the previews for it. It makes me sad that someone would oppose God so much that they would try to sneak the idea of him not existing into children's minds.

Speaking of athiest books...

Y'know, I'd say he is much worse. Rowling's books, while not "high literature" in any sense, at least had a world that was interesting and characters that were compelling. Once I started an "HP" book I generally couldn't put it down again until I was done.

"Eragon" could have been much worse than it was-- I will say he was good at making a world and a history you wanted to know more about. He just wasn't any good at making you care.
