So on Friday my teachers were talking about how children today are being reckless on the internet and giving out way to much personal information and more and more people are getting kidnapped because of the internet (they were blowing it waaaay of proportion. Their thinking was that we shouldn't even be talking to anyone through the internet, they seem to assume that anyone who used a chatting site is trying to kidnap you) and then they gave us an assignment to research and make a project about this.
So I was on Facebook when I came up with an idea. What if I wereto make an account on Facebook, put up a picture of a random person, join a high school network, and see how many people I could get to add me as their friend.
So I got my sister into this and we made the account of Rachael Smith who used to live in Saskatoon but moved to Atlanta and is going to Lakeside High School. We made this account and then started to add anyone who went to that high school.
By the end of the day we had managed to get 42 friends.
No one even questioned who we were, until Max.
Max accepted our friend request and asked us what grade we were in, we said we were in grade 11.
From there Max and I casually talked for about an hour about sport, and his wrestling and football team.
And then he had to go and say that he thought I was cute and wanted to see me at school tomorrow.
Nah...... I feel so bad.
This guy thinks he's going to meet this girl Rachael Smith tomorrow,
and she doesn't exist.

Well, you should be honest with him, of couse. Try to do so gracefully, though. Something like... I dunno...
"I'm sorry, but Rachel Smith isn't a real person. My name is actually (first name here), and I was just doing this as a project for school. (Explain the project a little if you want.) I had to talk to at least one person to see if I could manage to get personal information (this will give you an excuse for conversing with him)."
That's... the best I can tell you. You can't really keep up the Rachel Smith persona forever. If you liked talking to him, let him know that you'd like to be friends if he's not upset.

I think I need to finish my experiment first though.
I have a week to do it,
so I was hoping to do this for about four days.
But I think I will tell him.
My sister told me that we should just delete the account and just forget about it,
but I'm not that heartless!

Oh, that sounds so Romantic
Comedy genre movie.
Like, what if you delete the
account, but he gets desperate
to find you and stuff, so he
somehow sees the school records
and there actually is a Racheal
Smith in that school, only she's
stupid and ugly and...um...she
doesn't like sports, so he knows
that it can't be the same girl, so
he's all depressed and stuff, but
one day he miraculously finds
you, but he doesn's know that you
are Rachael Smith, so you just
start talking about sport again,
and he gets a deja vu-ish feeling
and he asks you if you know a
Rachael Smith. And you blush and
stuff and tell him you have to leave.
But he chases after you and says
something like "OH I've finally
found you! You're the ONE!!!"
And the rest is history. -sigh-
Ahem. I think I got a little carried
away right there.

it's completely ridiculous
xd
So, yeah. I agree with Val.
If you want to wait untill you've handed
in your project, just tell him that you're
currently visiting your grandmother or
something, and then {once your done
with your grandmother} tell him what
Val said in the nicest way possible. And
say that you had to make him believe
you, otherwise your project wouldn't
have worked and that's why you lied.

Anyway, seems like he kinda likes you. (: Not Rachael Smith, you. It was your personality.
But like, yeah...you should tell him..sometime soon. Or it will just get worse..

While I do agree your teachers were blowing things out of proportion; they were also a bit right in that people do give out too much information. And young people especially dont always consider the consequences of one tidbit here and a tidbit there accumulating into one big dossier of information that can be used to track you down. The internet isnt as anonymous as people seem to always think.
Max should perhaps know not only for the sake of knowing, but to realize how easily a stranger insinuated themselves into his online life. The point isnt that you're lying to him for a school project, but rather you could have been anyone lying to him. Its only a hop skip and a jump to go from that to grooming behavior and saying 'oh I have such-and-such practice at the park after school, lets meet there instead' - do we even know how many kids go missing and parents dont think to keep chat logs or even check them? (aim and trilly both typically dont keep logs til you enable them)
Maybe Im being paranoid because I have younger brothers. Or that Ive talked to some immensely creepy people online.
Anyway. Im sure he'll understand if he has a brain at all in his head. Just explain it logically and dont get hysterical if he needs a bit of time to adjust. It was a bit of a personal betrayal in that you werent honest...but then people do lie online.
Any plans to instead of deleting the facebook, put up information regarding your experiment? I mean..again your teachers blew things out of proportion..but at the same time shouldnt every single person that 'added' you know for the sake of knowing?

what should I do? "Rachel, I haven't seen you in school at all." "I'm sorry, I've had a cold for a few days. I'm not sure when I'll be back." You'll just have to keep adding lies until you can tell him the truth. It sounds bad, but it's about the only thing you can do at this point. XD (By the way, Shindig, awesome story. wink )

Yes, its likely he'll be hurt. But all that was untrue was where you lived and your name aye? Do you have any idea how many romantically cute movies there are out there with identity swaps and love mixups?
Heartbroken...you can still offer him friendship.
Stupid...people do stupid things. Its learning from it that's important.
Used...I wouldnt think used is the word. He walked into it willingly because he thought the picture you posted was cute.
Honestly. If you think your conscience is going to bother you...tell him. Not because its easy, but because its right.

I've pretended to be someone else online before, then told the person who I really was, and they weren't mad at all, really.
Just tell him, and if he gets mad, then he's mad. If he says, "Oh. Well. I still think you seem like a nice person, regardless of who you are. Want to be online friends or something?", then you're a nice person and he wants to be your friend regardless.
And Shindig, that'd be an awesome movie. D;
