Shimshek ushered her offspring towards her special lake where she would teach her foals how to keep themselves proper. However, she also disapproved of her sons: their rivalry would be the end of them, it would. Such as it was, it came from her, after all. Khepri had more of Taiyaung's appearance, and more personality, though, however, Khepri was the "princess" of the trio, as well as the youngest. Also, she was Shimshek's only daughter: Khepri would be spoiled to death, and Xiaodan and Liang were sure to be protective of their sister. Shimshek had to force the brothers to be on either side of her with Khepri walking in front so that she could keep an eye on her squabbling children. Much as she was proud that her children were already showing some intelligence that beauty truly was something to appreciate, she disapproved how they were going about it. "Behave," she warned, and though she had a gentle voice, there was an underlying threat to it as well.
Khepri was silently laughing at her brothers. They were both such idiots it was tough keeping a straight, beautiful face. Why her brothers had a complex about who looked better was beyond her, especially when it was so obvious she won out on both of them. She was the most beautiful from their batch, and obviously, since she was the youngest, was going to get the best treatment from their mother. It was a strange thought to her if Shimshek loved all three of them equally, which, oddly enough, their mother did. Shimshek loved all three of her children equally, although she complimented and insulted all three of them. But that was all right: that was just how she showed her love, and she would protect them with her life if need be. Their father had taken off on a quick "business" trip, as Shimshek called it, and so the three were left in her care. Khepri smirked as she "led" the way to the crystal lake that their mother often visited; it would become their special "place"... she knew it would be.

"No physical fighting, boys," Shimshek threatened as they reached the end of their walk. "If I see even one speck of disfigurement on either one of you, neither of you will be allowed to play or practice flying." She eyed both of them carefully, making sure she made eye contact to tell them she was serious. "Now, children. Stand here as I show you the proper way to care for your bodies and outer beauty, as well as to shape your own inner beauty so that you shine more beautiful than the stars." She showed them how to polish their hooves by taking some sand and rubbing it at just the right pressure to sharpen them, and then rinsed them slowly in the crystalline waters, where she produced her sparkling silver hooves with pride. She glanced at Khepri and nodded at her daughter's horn. "You only need to rub your horn against your first, dear, to keep it glowing and beautiful. Sand will destroy your horn should you use this particular method, as it only works for hooves." She smiled beautifully at them as she showed her sons how to care for their wings. "Wings are tricky. We have enough feathers that, when together and wetted, they are heavy and difficult to dry. As such, we use a spraying method..."
As her mother's voice droned on about the procedures to care correctly for themselves, Khepri's mind began to wander around as she stared at the surrounding forest. She held deep affection for her brothers, but, like Shimshek, she tended to get exasperated with them as well. But, no matter. Unlike them, she had no rival to worry about, and obviously would grow to be the most beautiful mare ever to have appeared. "Mother, if it so pleases, may I take a bite of that grass over there?" she asked, and once Shimshek gave approval, she wandered away towards the juicy-looking, sweet grass and began to nibble on it. One ear flicked to show that she was somewhat paying attention to her family but otherwise she ignored them.

Highly amused at her children somewhat, she ignored Khepri for the better part of the day as her daughter seemed perfectly at ease, especially since her sons had to live away from their mother with two different herds. She worried the most for her eldest, as he lived with her hated enemy, Artemis Entreri. However, since Entreri was rarely around the 'herd' that belonged to the human called Samus, that didn't mean much since she knew that once Entreri heard rumor of -her- children he would come without a doubt to kill them. Especially her sons. She glanced over at Xiaodan as he strutted about, making her mouth quirk slightly. "Xiaodan, calm down. I shall show you the spraying method soon. For now, your wings glisten perfectly... as does Liang's. No fighting," she warned, and then glanced around for her daughter.
She hadn't wandered far away, but it was far enough she couldn't hear her family's voices anymore. She was actually on a self-made quest to find her father, whom Shimshek said had gone on a trip for a little while. This made her sad somehow, as Shimshek was a harsh mother, though she had come to appreciate the few times Shimshek was affectionate and kind, as they were rare. It appeared her mother was only this way because she missed her mate (not that Khepri knew that Shimshek and Taiyaung weren't quite yet mates, but that was besides the point). As she pranced along pretending she would find her father hiding just to scare them, her mother's voice made her jump in surprise. "Khepri!" Startled, she didn't see that she had stumbled down a steep hill until it was too late.

[ Time Jump! One month has passed and all three foals have now become beautiful adults! ] [ *Khepri falling down suddenly happens in an inserted RP where she meets Ochoco. ]
She had struggled with herself and her children to the best of her ability, and that day where Khepri fell off a cliff seemed so far away. She had had a scare when she had flown down to check to see if her daughter was all right, only to find an enormous amount of mud... and no Khepri.
She was happy to have found her daughter again later that evening, safe and beautiful as ever. She had then vowed to herself to never be the cold-hearted mother had been acting like recently. Though she doted on her children now, she felt old age creeping up on her. She was still young yet (thank Epona) but she felt old when she looked at her newly grown adult children.
Her sons were ready to take off and live on their own now, but she hoped they would visit. Khepri had chosen to live with her for the sake of not letting her feel alone because Taiyaung was still doing his duties. Shimshek allowed Khepri to wander about on her own, however; she herself knew that her children couldn't always stay cooped up in one place.
Now, however, she and her daughter were bathing (it was both habit and ritual) as they waited for the boys to return from claiming their territories. "Khepri," she called softly as she washed her wings carefully.
The newly grown, young mare fixed her hair with a simple flip as she smiled appreciatively at her reflection in the gentle, swaying water of the lake. She was, in a word, gorgeous. Yes, she was quite vain, but she couldn't help that. She had learned all her young life that beauty was the essence of life itself. Inner beauty, specifically, but she ignored that in the throes of the glorious feeling of her adult form.
She immediately walked to her mother's side when she was called, though she said nothing for she knew Shimshek needed her concentration when cleaning her wings. Her mother glistened beautifully and all Khepri could do was drip with envy and awe. Shimshek had been doing this sort of thing for a long time and so did everything with an easy grace that belied the storm behind it.
She sighed and nodded when Shimshek finished. "You called for me, Mother?" she said politely, but kindly and lovingly. She wasn't sure on the concept of love yet, but she knew family love, and family held her strongest affection above all else. They were all she knew and had right now, which was why she chose to stay with her mother rather than to move away; she was still nervous about living on her own, truth be told.
