Hey, I know its been a while, been busy, but I thought off a really random question... Does anybody name their ships, and If so, why do you name them what you do.

Ill give a few examples of what Ive named my ships in the past.

HMS Ifrit
HMS Odin
HMS Beahumut
HMS Shadow
HMS Shadowfox
HMS Buddha
HMS Devon
HMS Brighton

All my ships are named HMS purly because I'm English and quite patriotic, and all the military ships in the British navy are HMS (Her Majesty's Ship or His Majesty's Ship depending on the gender of the crowned monarch at the time) and the names, Odin, Ifrit and Beahumut are names from Final Fantasy Games (Beahumut is a varient that I use on the name of a character whos correct spelling escapes me at the moment) I cant remember why I used Shadow, but I am currently using Shadowfox as the name for my stealth bomber. I use Buddha as it is part of the username that I use for most sites I am part of. I use Brighton as it was the city I was born in, and I used Devon because of a strange facination with the county of Devon I seem to have aquired :S)

So if you guys name your ships, what do you name them and why?

It's Bahamut. He's the big black/silver dragon that's usually a high-level summon. Love him. smile

My character name, Killiakti, is from the MMO Asheron's Call (or AC), which is the other MMO I play. The game lore is completely its own -- every race and animal is unique to the game. The continent the game is set on is called Dereth by the humans, but one of the old, powerful races, called the Falatacot, refer to the continent in their language as Killiakti or Killiakta.

So, almost all of my ships are named after things from AC. It's half in tribute to the wonderful lore, and half because the names sound cool to me. Here are a few:

Leikotha Arenair - My Drake. A powerful Haebrous warrior with a tragic history
Latzimestal and Filinuvekta - Political divisions among the the Dericost; I just like the sound of these words
Alatar Locke - My Heron, which I use for explorations. Alatar Locke is the great human explorer and cartographer of Dereth. I thought it was appropriate. When I can fly a Buzzard, I will transfer the name over.

I have one ship that I didn't name after something in AC. My Osprey is named Unown, because it looks like one! mrgreen

Well my corp has a prefix for ships because we are roleplaying serpentis.
Corelum xxx for normal ships
Corelum Shadow xxx for cloaking ships
Corelatis xxx for capital ships

Some I've commonly used are

Corelum Taser - Crusader
Corelum Marauder - Zealot
Corelum Shadow Ninja - Pilgirim smile
Corelum Beat - Ishtar
Corelum Tesseract - Hyperion
Corelum Battlestar - Megathron
Corelatis θάνατος - Thanatos (in Ancient Greek)
Corelum Hive - Dominix
Corelum Spitfire - Drake
Corelum Stalker - Buzzard

I have basic names for all my ships. Usually in reference to Starcraft or battletech.

Otherwise I use there names.

For my abaddon, I will equip 1 color of each charge to make a rainbow. Then name my ship skittles and go pvping in 0 sec.

Scream "taste the rainbow, b*tches!" in local and watch as they die from diabetes.

If I ever get a battleship of some sort, I might name it the USS Demetrius. Demetrius just sounds like a really strong/cool name for a starship.

Harbinger: [TDD] Alaris III (random name)
Hurricane: [TDD] Sotha IV (from Elder Scrolls - built lots of machines and clockwork robots)
Zealot #1: [TDD] Azura I (my Paladin in D&D)
Zealot #2: [TDD] Azura II (same)
Malediciton: [TDD] Asher III (random name)
Bestower: [TDD] Omgz VI (random name)
Retribution: [TDD] Codarl II (prototype mecha from Full Metal Panic)
Vengeance: [TDD] Sagara II (main character from FMP)
Wolf: [TDD] Doran II (random name)
Jaguar: [TDD] Jaegar II (random name, similar to Jaguar)
Sacrilege: [ARX-7] Arbalest I (protoype mecha from FMP again, this time including the proper designation/tag)
Coercer: [TDD] Teletha I (captain of the submarine from FMP)

I'm on a bit of a Full Metal Panic trip right now which is why my newer ships are named after FMP characters.

Ship names I will use in the future:
Tuatha de Danaan (when I get a Curse)
Sagara (FMP again)
Kurtz (ditto)
Kalinin (again...)
Mardukas (and again...)
Amaranth (Nightwish song... not a huge fan of the song but a huge fan of the band, plus it's a cool name)
Tarja (Nightwish's lead singer...)
Elvenpath (nightwish song again)
Ever Dream (ditto...)
Escapist (ditto)
Kingslayer (ditto...)

i wish i could still play sad sad sad ...but when i did i name my ships funny ones usually, like my hurricane was named OMG WTF IS THAT!!! and my Hoarder i named The Hauler of Poo! kinda retarded names lol...

I sometimes name them, usually using the names of Angels... other times I'll just put my character name and then the shorthand for my corporation in brackets next to it.

I saw someone just the other day who had named their very large Amarr transport ship (that one that can hold 750,000 m^3... forgot the name) "I am Small."

I generally name mine after things in Dragonlance.

That and its kinda mandatory to change your ships name in my alliance, reason being so that you dont become every raider's favorite soap pickuper because they know right away from scanning you down what ship you are in.

I named my Mammoth "U.S.S. Alabama" because the mammoth looks very similar to the battleship with that name

My ships are mainly named in wolven ways, since I love the animal, and I want to get myself a Wolf and start wolf-packing with my corp. ^_^

My Rifter is called Nighteyes, after the wolf in the Farseer Trilogy, and I have a Thrasher called Lupa. The frigate may be small, but I like that it's speedy. When I get my Wolf, I'll be calling it Fenrir. heart
