Why do people in church raise one hand in the air during worship?

Two reasons I believe are:
1. Because it shows God that you are surrendering to him.
2. When I child wants their mom or dad to hold them, they aways reach up. So you could be asking our dad in eaven (God) to reach down and hold you close.

Yeah, I agree. I think people raise their hands in worship service to signify by faith that they surrender it all to God. I raise my hands towards God to really worship Him and connect with Him...

You're giving your burdens to Him. That's why He's there.

All right. Also it's because they are so caught up in the worship they can't hold it in. It happens alot in my church.

I thought that it might be that it was like a way of sort of ummm... a physical action to reinforce the words that they were singing. Would that be right?

There are alot of reasons why people do it. Pretty much all of them are for worship purposes.

As an Apostolic Pentecostal We do raise our hands in the air, but we also tend to run the aisles in song and worship. The raising of our hands is only the beginning.

Carwheels down the aisle and screaming at the top of the lungs for no reason were my favorites. of course i also raise the hand in the air at metal shows and pretty much any other time i feel like throwing it up there.

It's called Yadah Paise. This type of paise shows are love and submission to the lord by raiising are hands. It should be done with both hands in the air but most people feel combile with one hand in the air. ( because your arms start to hurt after a while sweatdrop or for other reason.) Lamentations 3:4 let us lift up our hearts with our hands unto God in Heaven. Psalms 134:2 Lift your hands in holiness and bless the Lord. Psalms Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
