The time before we lose the planet once we land on it is normally 2 days to the minute. Sometimes, the time will be a little longer, sometimes the planet will never fall. Then we lose another world to the Covenant. And we don't want that to happen, because, if they aren't beaten back, we lose any vehicles or weapons that we got from them.

In the case of Halo's, the time to lose is about never. The only way that we lose is if I say so, which will happen not that much. And loss might result in almost total annihilation.
