Class is now closed. Homework has until Sunday December 9th to be completed and turned in.Professor Concetta Herrera did not just walk into the room, she commanded the attention everything around her including the stones her heels hit in rhythm. She was wearing a dark green robe detailed elegantly like a tapestry, including a beautiful belt. Her dark short hair framed her ears and highlighted her multicolored eyes. She walked straight into the room and did a perfect dancers pivot. "Welcome back students. Many of you remember from last year I was Professor Concetta Santeri. I stand before you today a wedding latter now as Lady Concetta Herrera. You will address me from here on out as Lady Concetta. But that's it for now. We are moving straight into your lesson. On the board on the far right is your homework, please read over it before beginning your potion so you know what to pay attention to. The next board has your potion. And the final board has some details on the ingredients for you. The potion is also in your textbook." She gently pointed to each board as she spoke of them.

Today's lesson is simply an introduction. You will attempt to complete this potion and use self-discovery as your main learning tool. We work with some rare, and fun, ingredients that should give you a wide range of possibilities to explore. This potion will test your ability to follow directions, and to find understanding in all the ingredients. It is a simple, and practical potion for you to know.

The Cuspis Forix Potion Common Use : Improves Hand-Eye Coordination You begin by bringing the water to a boil, you will need a rapid boil. Carefully add the peppermint leaves until you get a distinct scent. Then add one of the two ginger piles. When the color of the liquid changes extinguish the source of heat. The moment the liquid stops boiling but is still warm you add the spider eyes as a sort of "garnish" across the surface. They should act something like the muggle candy "poprocks" and make the liquid fizzle and bubbles rise to the surface and pop. When all the gasses are finally released (the bubbles and fizzling stops) add the cungranexactator. When it seems like most of the cungranexactator is floating on the surface of the liquid relight the heat and bring the substance back to the boil. Either manually stir or use a stirring charm to make sure none of the cungranexactator sticks to the cauldron. When the cungranexactator has completely broken down into a pulp soaking up all the liquid in the cauldron and forming a sort of white, frothy paste add the Guinness. Magically the potion will turn into a clear golden liquid, you should be able to see the bottom of the cauldron. Completely turn off the heat and wait for the liquid to cool, but not completely. Add the other pile of ginger and the Acromantula blood at the same time. The golden liquid should gain a pearly shine and no long be transparent. Bottle 25ml of the liquid in a vial and place it in the vial holder on my desk marked correctly with your name and grade.

You Will Be Using - peppermint - A crossbreed of watermint and spearmint, with a high menthol content. It generally thrives in shade and has a distinct, memorable, oder. Often used in teas and other other aesthetics. chop 4grams of fresh peppermint leaves it into thin strips.- cungranexactator- It reminds you of an onion, in fact it's almost identical except it lacks the pugent odor. It will still make your eyes water when you chop it up, however. chop it into 100grams of rough cude shapes.- Acromantula blood - Just like humans, Acromantulas can "donate" blood without suffering from it. Even still, we try not to use much of the beautifully pearly liquid. You will only get a single, already measured vial. If you break, loose, or waste it you're out of luck. 5ml- spider eyes - Use your standard issue of spider eyes from the apothocrary kit you were supposed to get as a school supply. Their eyes are single lenses rather than compound eyes, ranging from simple light/dark-receptors to eyes rivaling those of a pigeon (some jumping spiders). carefully measure out 35grams- Guinness - is a dry stout that originated in Arthur Guinness's St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland. The beer is based upon the porter style that originated in London in the early 1700s. The distinctive feature in the flavor is the roasted barley which remains unfermented. For many years a portion of the beer was aged to give a sharp lactic flavor, but Guinness has refused to confirm if this still occurs. The thick creamy head is the result of a nitrogen mix being added during the serving process.I will add 50ml of this to your potion when you're ready. Students are not allowed to handle the substance.- ginger rhizome - First off, it's up to you to figure out what a "rhizome" is, luckily it's in your textbook - you need to to find out where. Secondly ginger is the common name for the monocotyledonous perennial plant Zingiber officinale. Ginger contains up to 3% of an essential oil that causes the fragrance of the spice. The main constituents are sesquiterpenoids with (-)-zingiberene as the main component. Lesser amounts of other sesquiterpenoids (β-sesquiphellandrene, bisabolene and farnesene) and a small monoterpenoid fraction (β-phelladrene, cineol, and citral) have also been identified. The pungent taste of ginger is due to nonvolatile phenylpropanoid-derived compounds, particularly gingerols and shogaols. The latter are formed from the former when ginger is dried or cooked. Zingerone is also produced from gingerols during this process, and it is less pungent and has a spicy-sweet aroma.grate 17grams of the ginger rhizome and separate it into two equal piles- water - If you don't know what common water is get out of this class. make sure this is clear, distilled water. The charm for distilling regular tapwater is inflixi putus. The charm for removing all but hydrogen and oxygen from the water is erkolcstele. 200ml of clear, mineral-free, distilled water.

The true value of an excellent potions master comes not from the ability to execute a perfect potion every time but from the greater understanding of a potion. One can make major mistakes the first time they make the potion and still learn a great deal. This class is about the learning and not necessarily the perfection of each potion. I expect no one to get the potion exactly right on their first try, however I expect everyone to come away with a greater understanding. Because of this I assign two grades for each class, the grades are then averaged together for your total. One grade is class participation. I expect you to not only make a potion in class, but to make a careless-error-free potion. That does not mean you will get the potion perfect, but it means you have tried. The other grade comes from your homework. That means, yes, if you plan on passing this class you must do your homework. In your homework you explore reasons behind the potion, and come to the understanding that is necessary in potions making. You may get an "E" in the class but not doing the homework will result in a "T" and bring you down to a failing grade. Likewise you can completely fail the potion making part of the grade, but stellar homework can mean you pass. This Lesson's Homework: 1. Review the potions making experience you had in class today, what are your initial thoughts and feelings? What are things that came to your attention immediately? 2. Many students always find beer to be an unusual potions ingredient. Why do you think it is vital to this potion? Surmise how it might have been discovered to be a key ingredient for this potion. Why do you think it's necessary that a specific beer brand/type is used? Do you think the potion would work with any other beer? 3. Why is it necessary to use pure, distilled water? What do you think would happen if you didn't? 4. Summarize what you have learned since making the potion in class. This class will run from Monday Nov 5 - Monday Nov 19 Homework is due by Sunday Nov 25
Because of Skada's unfornuate hospitalization the dates have now been moved. The class will officially end Friday December 7th and the final day to submit homework is Sunday December 9th. Thanks for understanding.

Naida had been looking forward to potions very much and was super early to the class. In fact, the teacher wasn't there when she arrived. So she waited, and then noticed the boards were prewritten. She carefully looked at them all, and then started setting up her work station in preperation. She quietly wondered if they worked alone or together. But decided to try this one alone anyways.
After what seemed like ages to the impaitent eleven year old, others filtered in and Professor Lady Concetta began class. Naida felt lucky that Lady Concetta was no long winded, and quickly began when told. She measured out the water and poured it into her cauldron. Then realized, ugh, more charms. She wasn't sure why, but she decided to purify then distill. "er-cole-steel" She said but quickly realized it was all wrong. "Er-kolk-ste-le!" And the water ripped, becoming clearer. Perfect! Now to distill... "In-flix-i-pu-tus!" And the rippling completly stopped, but the water level receeded. Shoot! Apparently you purify and distill before measuring. She'd have to start over. But now that she knew the spells, maybe she was even getting the hang of this spell casting thing, it would hopefully go faster.

Lorako was really happy. She loved potion, it was so interresting to see how things changed in a potion. She took notes about the ingredients. There was many she actually didn't knew what it could be.
She took her cauldron and started with the simple thing : bringing the water to boil. She push the fire hard to get a rapid boil like the professor lady asked. She took the peppermint leaves and put it on the cauldron after she chopped it into stips. She wait for a distinct scent. Actually she didn't knew which scent it could be. There was a little one which appear. So she decided to continue with it.
But what could be rhizome ?? she looked at her textbook to find out. But she was totally lost, she didn't understand the words at all. It was more difficult than the English she learnt.

Kinzo smiled as Lady Concetta spoke to them; she seemed like an interesting teacher. As she wrote notes on the potion they would be making she lit a fire beneath her cauldron. After finishing the list of ingredients she poured water into the cauldron. The witch jumped slightly at the sizzle it made when hitting the black metal, but she soon recovered and began to slice up her peppermint. How am I supposed to smell something different when the leaves already smell? Oh well. She threw a handful into the pot, but since she noticed no diffrence she added another handful. Is this working right? she thought to herself, but she soon relaized it was. The overpowering smell of mint poured into her nostrils and her eyes watered slightly. "Okay, I think that's good." SHe looked to her notes and noted the next thing to add would be the ginger rhizome. "Where have I heard that before?" she asked herself scanning her memory. Ah! I remember! That Biology text I read! She added the pile of chopped ginger stem (Well that's the best word for it I suppose.) and watched the potion.

As Sira listened to Lady Concetta speak, her eyes wandered off to the board. The prospect of working with interesting and/or unusual ingredients was what made her want to join Potions class in the first place. She had a feeling, however, that this could be a class in which she would struggle a bit.
One of the questions mentioned the importance of purifying and distilling the water, which she would have just ignored otherwise. This involved the use of charms, which she was a bit comfortable with, so she pointed her wand at the still water in front of her.
"Kerlcol..ste...le?" The R and the L's made her tongue roll in all sorts of ways that seemed unnatural. She was misreading the spell, and as such, nothing was happening. Reading it over, she gave it some more tries, becoming a bit frustrated, but finally got it right:
"Er - colk - stele", she repeated, and purify it did. Or, at least, it seemed to; she wouldn't go as far as saying it was crystalline, but it looked... fine.
Now, distilling. Not wanting to lose time with it as she did trying to get the purifying spell right, Sira did an odd movement with her shoulders, as if trying to relax and, waving her wand, she commanded: "Inflixi putus". She looked at the water, but as far as color went, nothing had happened. Had the water level gone down a bit? Sira wasn't entirely sure, but she proceeded anyway. This sense of helplessness did bother her a bit, though.
Carefully measuring the closest she could get to 200ml of water, she poured it into her cauldron and placed it over the fire, waiting for the fervent bubbling to begin. Meanwhile, she chopped the peppermint leaves as instructed, feeling that sweet (but strong) scent go onto her hands. Sira wondered if she was supposed to wear gloves or some kind or protection while she did so, but this smell was so pleasant that she didn't mind having it on her fingertips.
She dropped the leaves inside the now boiling pot and, leaning over it, Sira felt the menthol perfume rise, along with the vapor, from inside.

Naida watched carefully after she lit her fire, but waiting for water to boil had to be one of the most boring things in the world. While she waited, she flipped her silver knife around in her hand. And then realized she could be using this time to prepare things...
First was the peppermint. She got to use that knife of hers, which someone excited her. She carefully took the velvety leaves and sliced them, as told, into thin strips. They smelled wonderful, and made her wish she was simply making tea. Sadly, she was not, and measured on her scales the amount of sliced leaves she would need.
Next she would be needing the ginger ... thing. She flipped her textbook over and around and couldn't find it. Maybe it was in the older years textbook. But she had used ginger in cooking before. There was the plant bit that grew above the ground, and the root bit below the ground. The root bit was what you used in cooking, and root sounded like "rhizome" so we went with it. On the supply table she found a little grater next to the ginger roots and took it back to her desk. She then grated and measured out her too piles on her set of scales.
Her water was still just acting like it had all the time in the world, so she moved on. She measured the spider eyes she would need, although she decided she really didn't like the small, feathery things. Spider eyes were just freaky, and that's all there was to it. Then it was time to cut up that onion-looking thing that she wasn't even going to try and pronounce. At first, it seemed like this was going to be easy. But her eyes quickly began to tear up, and about half-way through her nose even started to run. This was absolute torture! Completely inhuman for the classroom. She was so glad when she finished and was able to wipe her face on her sleeve. She made a mental note to hopefully never have to make this potion again.
Now, about her water. What was taking it so long? She rechecked her cauldron and discovered... the flame had gone out. Argh!! How totally frustrating. She decided to stay and watch it this time. Stupid muggle matches. She couldn't wait to learn a flame spell.

Lady Concetta walked between the students observing the potions. She shook her head sadly at those not performing well.
First was the first year Lorako, she walked up to the girl and pointed to the cauldron. "You didn't purify or distill, did you? I can tell by the color of the water. That will affect your potion later in the process. And actually, using the ginger plant stem is going to make this a very poisonous potion. I would not suggest ingesting this at all..."
Next she walked over to the 3rd year, Kinzo. After three years in her class, surely he knew better. "You didn't purify or distill your water... that's not going to be good." She pointed out to him.
On her way back up to the front, she passed the beautiful first year Sira, "It's looking good. Keep up the solid work." She didn't want to point out the inaccuracy of the measurements, but hopefully it wouldn't affect the student's work too much.

"Duh!" Kinzo slapped her own forehead after hearing Lady Concetta's comments. "Ugh, I was too eager for my own good..." The witch sighed and wondered whether she ought to dump the whole thing. Well since I've got more ginger and peppermint I guess I should... After she had dumped the botched potion she poured more water into the now empty cauldron. "Err-coal-steel." she pronounced purifying the water. Then she spoke again to distill it, "In-flicks-ee pu-tos." Now that the water was prepped she sliced more peppermint and grated another pile of ginger. "Guess I'll have to wait." She watched the flame dancing beneath the pot for a few moments and then measured out her spider eyes. Consulting the book she poured exactly 35 grams into a beaker. Kinzo re-read the potion's instructions and silently thanked the gods that the professor had warned her before she used up something rare.

She listenned to the professor and started to be scared. "Poisonous ? oh my god." she wanted to start again. What the professor meant by purify ? She decided it would be better to ask.
"Sorry Lady Concetta, i don't understand, how i can purify or distill it ? Can i start again ?"

"Of course you may start over, but if you do that too many times you may run out of time with the class. And everything you need to know about the water is listed with the ingredients. Make sure you read everything very carefully."
