As I type this thread, I'm in the middle of rewriting a scene in which the character is saved from a vicious monster. Then it suddenly hit me that I don't know what to call it xd In fact, I don't have a name for any subspecies of creature in my works, other than the overused generic staples of hordes of zombies, demons, treefolk, dragons, etc. (which I sparsely use, might I add. Save for demons and dragons. Very important plot details. And I can't imagine my story without them. sweatdrop )

Does anyone else have any problems such as this? What do you do to give a name to your monstrous masterpieces? ^^

I did C:
But I don't wite about beasts much, because I write realistic fiction (is that the same as non fiction? I never quite knew)

Still, you could try to think of all the animal bits that make your monster and then create something monstrous. There's lots of fantasy name creators out there in the Internet to inspire you, too!

What you could also do is think about your monster. Decide its most important attribute, and try and find prefixes and suffixes in latin that describe said attributes. Skew it as you see fit, for instance, if you like the sound something, but like it better ending in an 'et', then change it. It is a fictious beast, so it's not like any language "purists" can chew you out for it. Better yet, if your story takes place on a different world, try and make up a bit of your own language. You don't have to go full blown, Tolkien-style, but just little bits and pieces.

Say you have a character named Otyrel. 'O' as a prefix could imply that the name is masculine, the suffix 'el' could mean 'land' and 'ty' could be 'water', or something to that effect.

End Lengthy explanation xd

I have so much trouble with this - I came up with a monster a few years ago, and they've never had a name. I know all about the world they came from, how they got into the world I'm writing about, what they look like, what makes them so nasty.. but no name. ;_;

Aye, luv, I know what ye means. I do get that all the time now. (Monster appears and...which monster is it? *Wracks brain*) My suggestion is to look through lists of unknown/un-heard-of fantasy/folklore creatures.

Another place to look for names (if you have time on your hands) are word-finds and misspellings. Try looking for a base word and swapping around letters.

I don't usually need to name mythical creatures, as I just use generic ones.
That's pretty lame of me.
