Random music question:
When you listen to music, are you primarily interested in the way the music sounds, or what the lyrics say?
Personally, I'm in it for the music. My stance is: words are for reading, music is for music. I'm only interested in the lyrics insofar as they sound when sung.
But that's just me. You?

.Music has been listened to even without words for a long time (Orchestras) I have a CD by Asian Kung Fu Generation (A Japanese band) and I like it, even though I don't understand what the heck they are saying
Lyrics complement music, but they usually aren't essential

Yeah. Asian Kung-Fu Generation is sweet. L'arc'en'ciel is great too. If I listened to music just for lyrics I probably would never of listened to Teenagers by My Chemical Romance or Animals by Nickelback.

Silence of the Clams Lyrics complement music, but they usually aren't essential Agreed. I've just met people that will shoot down certain music if the lyrics aren't "deep." I thought I'd get a sampling from this group.

I'm primarily in it for the way it all sounds, but quality lyrics will push an otherwise mediocre song up higher.

When I hear a song I can't help but process the lyrics, it's just how my brain works. Whether there are or are not lyrics makes no difference to me, but if there are lyrics, then they are part of the auditory composition and can effect the whole emotional content of the song including the music.
And if the lyrics are horrible or inane, not even the best tune is going to help me enjoy them.
