Once (I don't remember why) I was copying a picture of a dalek off the case of the Dr.Who video when I suddenly realized where the concept of the dalek might have come from. A scrap of dialog popped into my mind:
Scene: Restaurant, two men are discussing a new episode. A: So I was thinking that we need a new alien villain species. I was thinking of something more inorganic in appearance, yet independent of people. What do you think? B: Yes. I suppose though, that originality is a tall order. A: Yes. B: You want something unique, that has never been done before. A: I see you anticipate me precisely. B: You need to start with a basic shape. Say uhh. . . (Looks around, sees salt shaker) Like this perhaps (Picking up salt shaker). A: Hey! That gave me a great idea. Pass me a paper napkin, please. (Scribbles rapidly) What do you think? B: Yes. Very original, that. A: I think I like it. What should I name them. B: I don't know. . .Dalek?
Yes! I think daleks came from salt shakers! blaugh

You know, as a design, the Daleks suck...but they work. But they shouldn't... I love them!

And there's me thinking you meant in the programme itself!
Mind you, I can tell you the Seventh Doctor's explanation for that... If you want me to, that is!!

katybutterfly And there's me thinking you meant in the programme itself! Mind you, I can tell you the Seventh Doctor's explanation for that... If you want me to, that is!! It's okay. I've seen The Genesis of the Daleks so I know where they originated in the storyline. I figures some people might get the impression I meant the origin in the story, but I couldn't think of another way to phrase the title. xd

I think I read somewhere that Terry Nation (the guy who invented the Daleks) got his inspiration from watching dancers seemingly glide across the stage or something along those lines.

Travis III I think I read somewhere that Terry Nation (the guy who invented the Daleks) got his inspiration from watching dancers seemingly glide across the stage or something along those lines. Aye. He wanted them to move like that. Then he tried to work out how to do that. So me made a seat where the operators inside the Daleks would sit and designed it around that. 3nodding Then probably added fancy extra bits. (I watched confidential. 8 D)

I always thought that the writers were all drunk when they realized that they had to have a new enemy by the next day. So one guy goes to puke in the bathroom while the others head to the kitchen where they find a salt shaker and a whisk. Then the third guy comes back from the bathroom with the plunger with some horrible report on the toilet's status and the other two just shout 'ITS PERFECT!'

The meeting you refer to occurred AFTER the designer had come up with the basic design of the Daleks.
In Confidential the original Creator of the Daleks stated this, along with the fact the ONLY comparison he had EVER made between Daleks and pepper-pots (or salt shakers) is how they move across a flat surface (I.e, smoothly)

A pepper-shaker with a plunger, a ray-gun and a spyglass...? It sounds more likely that the person who invented it just bought some random stuff at a yard sale, and watched his/her kid glue it together!
