When I was in high school/junior high there was this saying going around about which side you wore an anklet or earring on. If it was on one side it meant you were gay and on the other side straight. I figured it couldn't be a reliable sign since not everyone could know about it. Plus I always forgot which side meant which.
Does anyone know anything about this? Where did it come from? What do the the different sides (right and left) symbolize?

Hah. I remember when people would freak out about that. Funny thing was, no one I knew actually knew which side was which. Causing everyone to just bite the bullet and get one side pierced.

I only remember it with ear piercings on guys. I think, if it was on the right ear, you were gay, and on the left, you were straight...then again, I live in SC, so if it isn't a big HONKING diamond dragging your ear down, or a disc-thingy the size of a hockey puck, people will just say you're gay anyways... stare

Yeah. It was a 90s thing I think. If you had one ear-ring and it was on your...left ear? Then it was a pride thing.
That's why my mom freaked out when I wanted another piercing--but only on one ear. I already have a hole in each ear but she was suspecting it was a pride thing. It's not but hey I have no problem with that connotation.

i had a lot of gay friends in high school, none of which mentioned such a thing. and i see plenty of people of wearing jewelry on either side.
the only thing ive heard is wearing a complete black bracelet means you want to get laid. either way i think its all completely stupid in the end. its just jewelry, nothing more nothing less. that or someone's pathetic attempt of making another homosexual stereotype.

It came from the 80's and I don't remember why. I think it had to do with a group of guys all wearing an erring on one side only and stating that was the "gay" thing to do. It was pretty much a trend and then people assumed thats how you could tell the difference between a straight and a gay guy but really it doesn't matter much anymore; because everyone forgot witch side is witch.

Wow, I'd never heard of the bracelet thing. xd I think the steroetyping by jewelery is pretty silly myself; I was just curious.

The bracelets were banned from my old middle school because if you snapped one it meant you wanted to pop their cherry. That's why these bracelets got nicknames like "******** Bracelets". -LD

I hated that bracelet thing. I used to wear alot of those little bracelets everyday to school until one of my friends started to make fun of me for it. She's tease me saying "Oh! You wanna have sex don't you because you're wearing those sex bracelets. You're missing one too!!" .. and of course, it was the same number I had worn before.
Stupid people.

I heard that those sex bracelet things were called Snap Bracelets, or something; I have a friend who wears like a bajillion of them, and the only one she ever remembers is that if you snap the black one, you're supposed to ******** that person. Certain colours, if you snap, then you've gotta like flash, give a lap dance, etc...
...It is kinda weird.
You know, I think that I must be a really whacked out person, or something, 'cause I am the ONLY person whose ever brought something like this up; if I bring it up to other people, they usually look at me like I should be in a mental hospital for thinking so specifically about something so pointless.
Which right and left side? I don't mean like which one means gay and which means straight (who can ever remember that, anyway?! I don't), I mean... Like, YOUR left or someone ELSE's left? If people say, "Left ear means your gay," is it viewing left or the person's left?

Well, I don't know about that, Miss Juria. I just think it makes you observant, and interspective (the opposite of introspective, used in Sociology and Psychology). I mean, some people think I'm strange for paying close attention to facial expressions, voice tones, word choice, and causes and effects of actions. But those who know me best know that it's just how I am--I guess it's the writer in me. That's why sometimes I'll say something to people who look like they're having a bad day, just to cheer them up. That's why when my friends look hurt, or upset, or just tired, I'll ask them if everything is okay. And offer a shoulder to lean on, or cry on, an ear to listen, soothing words and kind advice. After all, we all need that sometimes, right?
I don't think you're "whacked-out" at all--I think you think about things more than most, and I think it's good that you bring things to attention--it's good when you can share your thoughts with people. And we both know that most people need to think more, not less.
My earlier advice to you still applies: just be yourself.

Okay a friend of mine told me that it only counts as a gay symbol when you have one hole in one ear. I have two in one ear, one in the other...so it sorta counts sweatdrop

I don't remember which side was which...I want to say left side was homosexual and right side was straight. I never took much stock in it though. People will be who they will be and there's no "subconscious leaning" as they say.

Wow! So much interesting information. It's strange how trends travel and evolve as they spread.
