I'm really not trying to sound ignorant here but I thought that the Amish/Mennonites, etc. shunned technology? I've seen a lot of posts around with links to amish websites, etc. and there is an Mennonite settlement right in the middle of a city I used to live in. They only used one van when they absolutely had to because of where the settlement happened to be and it has a major road practically down the middle of it confused

Well, as I understand it, the mennonites use very little technology. Usually only like artifical lighting and only few cars and such and thats about it. The Amish use no modern technology. The ones that have websites probably have someone else put the website together for them.

Really depends on the specific group, so far as I understand it, on exactly HOW much technology they can use.

I remember seeing an Amishfamily of four in a bus station when I was on my way with a (now) ex girlfriend to Utah. They looked very wary of all the stuff around them, and the kids were just fascinated with everything (they were like... 4 and 5 or something).

Thanks for the websites!

Question though.. Why exactly are they called "Beachy" Amish? Am I taking it too literal and associating them with the ocean? (Probably LOL). mrgreen

Also, if the Internet is corrupt but you use the Internet what makes it okay to use it for Emails and such? neutral

they are called beachy amish because "The Beachy Amish church arose from a 1927 division in the (Casselman) River Old Order Amish congregation in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.[1] Bishop Moses M. Beachy led the congregation during that time and, though he objected for the sake of humility, his name became associated with the faction. The Beachy Amish favored a milder discipline for members whose only offense was transferring membership to other Anabaptist churches."wikipedia. like i said it varies from group to group.some beachy amish use the internet but others just use the email only or the computer without internet.
