Islamophobia:
Does the fear of Muslims make you racist?
One of the newest terms to be coined here in the US. I'm not going to say anything else about this. I'd like to see how the discussion unfolds.

Hm... Being afraid of Islam's doesn't make you racist, but Religisist (I made that up biggrin ) You should be FEARFUL of the extremists, because every religiong has them, it's just in Islam they are more... violent. Infact, I feel bad for normal Islams, because of the way the extremists act, it makes people think that Islam is a violent religion, even though it's peaceful. You shouldn't be afraid of Islams, seeing as I have 2 friends who are Islam. I, however, am buddhist.

See, I dont think its the religion that they fear, because, obviously, you cant tell the religion of a certain person in an airport. People are just fearful of Arabs. I dont think this should really be considered racist, because its not really hate, its more of just a discomfort. But right now, the threats that we should really worry about arent Arab at all. In fact, most of the recent terrorists have been by caucasians. Its just a matter that Arabs made the biggest impact on our lives, and thats what makes us fearful.

Extreme people ARE scary, yes. Heck, I'm even afraid of extremists in my OWN religion! But I have friends that are Muslims. So no, I am not afraid of Islamic people in general.

I think it's wrong that alot of people are lumping Muslims and Islamics into the terrorist groups. The only ones that need to be 'feared and hated' are the extreamist groups who think nothing about taking the lives of others to further thier goals and use religion as a blanket excuse. There are extreamists of alot more faiths then just muslim and islam. Christians even have extreamist groups, such as the KKK and Arian(sp?) Nation to name a few. This is one example of judging the many by the actions of the few. Islam and muslim faiths are good in and of themselves and thier beliefs, but the extreamist groups have ruined the image of these faiths and caused unwanted and unwarrented fear and hate upon those groups.

Its the zealots in any religion that people need to worry about. They're the ones that make the most noise, that people hear more about, that, possibly, make the other belivers look bad. If the first thing one hears about Muslims are regarding jihads and suicide bombers, of course people are going to be afraid, but that's because they don't try to understand that not all are extremists. Not all Muslims are trying to kill the "infidels", just like not all Christians are Bible-thumpers whose response to everything is "Belive in the good Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour!" There are varying degrees to every belief system and, frankly, it's kind of scary running into any of the more devout belivers, even if you believe in the same Deity(sp?).
