Thank you sangu I think I'm getting teary-eyed.
Most missionaries now do good work.

In the past they did terible things thinking that their way was the only way. China was far from a christian country and when the europen people went to 'colonize' they beleived the barbarians couldn't live or find savation without them. The people didn't understand the missionaries and may people died. I hate the missionarys that go into a place thinking it backwards and try to tear apart the culture and rebuild it into what they consider a proper socity. China had a working civilization thousands of years. What do they have now? Communism.

Well it all comes down to wether or not a missionary group does research into the area and culture before trying to instigate change. That and thier solutions should not be short-term solutions. What your group did was good...because you all did your research, and thus you helped them help themselves. You offered a long term solution for which they will not always need your hand to thrive.

But...some other groups don't do that. That is the problem. They waltz in knowing very little, hand out short-term solutions and then make the problem worse. The people never learn to help themselves, and then turn around and depend upon handouts because what worked slightly for them has been obliterated.

I'm on birth control pills for medical reasons(I don't have an active sex life), and I have to say, I think it's the best thing that's ever happened to me.

But... um... to the discussion:

I don't understand why the church would preach against something like birth control. Wouldn't they rather see people have kids when they're prepared to have them, rather then all these teenagers/young adults run around with their own children, barely able to raise them? I'm not trying to be stereotypical, but teenagers are going to have sex. They're not going to stay abstinent just because 'God wants them to'.

It's no small benefit to the oppressive church that more babies make people poorer and less able to pursue education or have time for free thought, thus making them perfectly mindless drones.

Good for churning out soldiers of war, hmm?

All these months later, it shocks me how those who have joined an atheistic forum are not only taking up the cause of missionary work but admitting to have taken part in it in an apparently zealous fashion.

It shocks me as well that these people are so railing against the secular and scientific intentions of highly informed medical anthropology.

Perhaps you're in the wrong forum?
Perhaps you'd like to take up the cause celebre of spiritually inspired poor-house work? Insisting that some religious folks do good work?? You surely aren't also insisting that these good works justify religious belief? Hasn't Dr. Dawkins, Mr. Harris, Mr. Hitchens, etc. already laughed off the notions of the ethical nature of such spiritually sanctioned deeds?

Hmm, leads me to imagine there may be those lurking who enjoy bickering for bickering's sake.
Or is it all Devil's Advocate?! If it is - how fun!

If the churches allowed people to use birth control then... they might start having sex for... FUN!

gonk

Blasphemy!

Everyone knows that the only pleasure a self-respecting theist allows themselves in spiritual communion with deity of choice. Anything else is sinful rolleyes

Its quite obvious that you are talking about me so why don't you come out and say it? Or are you too afraid that people will notice your blatant attacks. Lets see first of all I NEVER claimed to be atheist. I just am not Christian. I have no religious belief one way or another.
I enjoy helping other people is that a crime?! Do I look like I care what Dr. Dawkins, Mr. Harris, or Mr. Hitchens think. I have been steering clear of you and this topic because you are not worth arguing with and between the two of us this topic got off track.

For that I apologize to everyone else who may have been put off by the childish bickering that consumed this thread for some time.

It's too bad our Theocracy prevents such things.

Oh, wait...
