Yue reread the message twice before slipping it into his desk. An order was an order, no matter how much he dreaded it. He reached into another drawer to extract a sheaf of blank papers and a pen.

Trying not to slouch in his chair, Yue spun the pen on his fingers before settling the point on the paper. He would have to write in a general way, without bias or prejudice as he was taught.

The Report
Year: 07 Month: 01

Case #01357
Mission: To retrieving the wandering souls of Flight A015 (bound for LAX Airport, Los Angeles from O'Hare Airport, Chicago)

Mission received on January 7, 2007 at 19:54. Division X was deployed immediately to North American Rocky Mountains. Flight was to crash 20:07:01; all 87 lives perished in accident on impact.

Division arrived at predicted scene 20:05:56. Plane was sighted with one clipped wing and one failed engine. Impact to the side of the mountain at 20:07:01 as predicted.

All souls of Flight A015 became wandering souls. Some were compliant while many were in denial of death.

One Hiroto Kanzaki escaped to the edge of the mountain. I tried to persuade him to leave the mortal realm for Meifu. Kanzaki, whose back was to the edge, said "Only she can set me free" before leaning back. He fell into the depths of the mountain.

The rest of the souls were successfully captured and sent. Division X returned to the Division at 00:30:18 January 8, 2007

Count of predicted wandering souls: 9
Actual count of wandering souls: 87
Count of wandering souls sent to Meifu: 86

The dark haired shinigami put down the writing instrument and sighed. Recalling the failed mission to write a proper report was difficult. It wasn't that the events weren't clear. It was the exact opposite.

He would leave it as it is for now and review the report for mistakes later. Perhaps in the morning...?

But whoever first said that one could sleep when one died... They LIED. And they should pay for such a lie...

A bell chimed. Requesting the presence of Shinigami Yamashita Yue in the Division Hall.

The bell's ring broke through Yue's thoughts. At the command, he rose from his seat and grabbed his cloak on his way out of his room.

No matter how it was phrased, an order was an order. To disobey would be... what was it that those humans in the military called it...? A demerit? Something about away without leave or deserting in the face of the enemy...

The cloak settled across the shinigami's shoulders as the door slid shut with a soft click.

We had a mission today, to find a missing shinigami. Corlasette was only an aura, but with fear and adrenaline pushing her, she was difficult to find.

The mission was... interesting? I guess. I traveled to the four parts of Meifu and met new people. I must say that I'd rather not visit the North again. By free will, I mean.

The girl I met, Sayuri was there with her kitsune shikigami. And the man that I said looked like a girl. Also the longed haired one that I met in the Music Room. Ah... Enkei, I believe? I'm pretty sure it was Enkei Hideyoshi, also from Japan.

He was also the one to anger a tree by smashing his fist into it. Nevertheless, the tree was not pleased. When I left to follow Tarelle (more on him later), he was still stuck in the tree with various people surrounding him. I guess he eventually was released, abet a little bloodied.

On another note, we also met the leader of Division 9, Tarelle. He looks like one of the merpeople, with his webbed ears and hands and his fish-like tail.

We eventually found Corlasette and made our way back to the Division. I wonder what happened to Sayuri's shikigami?

I met with the Adjutant and... I now have a partner? Such a surprise...

Well... I can't really say I didn't expect it to happen. I suppose all shinigami are partnered eventually. Just that I didn't expect it to be so soon.

His name is Enkei. And he's from Division 6.

For the amount of time that he was in the Music Room with Sayuri and me... I could practically feel the sparks flying between them. Ah, I'd rather not get caught up in this... But it's probably inevitable, ne?

I hope Sayuri doesn't react too... violently when she finds out... I must somehow find Enkei and tell him.

There was a great clamor about a new shinigami arriving. A little girl with special powers...

To have the Adjutant locked in his rooms to prepare for the arrival... She must have unusually strong powers... Such a person should be in Division X, shouldn't she?

Although Sayuri thinks otherwise. And that other woman, from Division 1 I believe? "Oya" she called herself...

It was a bit irritating how she entered our conversation unexpectedly. Who randomly pops in while two people are speaking to each other?

Anyway, Sayuri seems to want to "play" with the new girl. Or rather, test the extent of her powers and/or break her...

The special child that I mentioned earlier? I've just heard from one of my sempais that she has joined Division X. I was hopeful that I would no longer be the Rookie...

But Hiroki kindly (or not so kindly?!) reminded me that there can be more than one Rookie. Such hope completely crushed...

After so long, why am I still a rookie?! After half a century, isn't it natural to rise at least a little?

It's going to be odd. To be a sempai (who is a rookie) to another rookie. Just watch. This new child will surpass me... Ugh...

A thick manila folder slipped in beneath the door. Within in contains permission slips and an identity card with several sheets of instructions.

Yue glanced at the door from his position on the bed when he heard the slight rustling of an item being pushed under the door. Gracefully swinging his legs to the floor, the shinigami padded towards it in curiousity.

He bent at the waist to reach the thick folder. Upon opening it, a photograph slipped out. Picking it up for the floor, he gazed at the silver hair little girl squeezing worn plushie.

At his desk, Yue opened the folder to reveal a small stack of documents, including his assignment.

'My first assignment with a partner...' he mused. Carefully reading the instructions, Yue's eyebrows rosed slightly. A surveillance mission? A Classified A... What is it about this child that is so interesting?

Tugging open a drawer in his desk, the dark haired shinigami pulled out a notebook. He flipped through the pages until he found what he was looking for. An invisibility spell. It would be good just in case...

His lips moved silently as he double checked the spell and memorized it again. This way he would be sure that he and Enkei will not be found.

Satisfied that he knew the spell, Yue tucked the notebook back into its proper drawer. Into the drawer above it went the folder with his mission's information, the objective and instructions already memorized.

The silky black cloak was tugged back on as the tall shinigami made his way out of the room. To find his partner...

Ah... It's been a while...

I can't quite remember all the details of the months gone by, but I shall do my best to recount them...

To put it bluntly, Enkei has mysteriously disappeared. We did start on our way to the human world for our mission. But then we got distracted by a wandering aura. To guide such a form, Enkei chose a jar, only to cause the white aura to become more frantic...

He was successful in capturing the aura but I couldn't find him afterwards. I had assumed that he had released it into its room...

On the other hand, I spent some time with Sayuri in the kitchens. Over some green tea, we were engaged in a... competition, perhaps. For one so young, she was quite adept in finishing quote I've begun...

Unfortunately, she deemed it to end without a winner. As a person older than her, I must say that winning is not everything.

...

It's just that it's the only thing that counts.

but I must be careful. I might be opening up my heart too much. Perhaps it's because she is so young... But that mustn't happen again...

This feeling of losing time is a bit...discerning. I suppose once a person is dead, time is meaningless.

The mortal holidays came and went. Halloween. Christmas Eve. New Years Day. I suppose there are more holidays but they are the only one I can recall while I was alive in Japan. I believe the Americans have something called Thanksgiving with a turkey.

I remember that it was rare for me to have Christmas free. I was always working. But when I got off work, I would go and buy a Christmas cake. Although it was a bit awkward. An entire cake for one person. Is it not better to share it with another person? What a lonely Christmas...

Following Christmas... I remember visiting a shrine for New Years. Walking up those long stairs. Ringing the bell with a prayer and watching the sunrise.

I guess, these would be the human things I miss. Perhaps because it's purely tradition. I don't miss feeling tired and exhausted by my schedule, though. Somethings are just best left behind.
