You can easily be a fan of Final Fantasy without being a fan of 7. I know plenty of people who don't like 7 because its more Sci-Fi than it is Fantasy. But they are still FF fans and will always be so.

 Of course you can. Actually I don't know many, if any, people who are fans of the *entire* FF series -- not even counting the "unofficial" and spin-off titles.
FF7 just happens to be arguably the most popular of the series. It was also the first FF for many players, so it stuck with them over time. It was also the first to be presented in a cinematic manner, as opposed to the small sprite style of FF6.

I dislike FF12 rather bitterly but I am still a fan of the series. Being a fan of something does not mean you should mindlessly love all elements of it.
I am a massive fan of Guns 'N' Roses but the fact that I am not fond of the song Doulbe Talkin' Jive does not make me any less of a true fan. Same principle.
