I use a character map. If you have a PC with Windows XP it's under system tools in accessories. You have to set the font to MS Mincho to see Japanese. As for using the keyboard to type I have no clue.

well once you buy software (this is for anyone living here at japan) you can type kana, then you can go back and select which kanji you want from reading (it is not as long to take as you think) and click and show up. the rest is on keyboard. i dont not know how foreigner type. (i think that foreigner who are able to purchase program convert romaji to kana, then kana to kanji)

If you have Windows XP go to control panel>languages and regional (something or another...I think I may be wrong.) there you should be able to get the language bar to show up and add languages to it. Worked really well for me. mrgreen 間は散らせ間は (^nonsense^)

You can download a language pack free from microsoft. Search their site.
On Japanese keyboards, they have kana written on the corners so they can change the settings, but the lang pack will convert romaji to hiragana and other scripts.
It might take a bit getting used to to use it. Keep the setting on hiragana for the most part, type what you want in romaji, then press the space button to convert into kanji or katakana.
