Well, in all technicalities, France was settled by the Franks, which were a Germanic tribe. And as a tribe, they spoke their own version of Proto-Germanic (which later evolved into Old Norse, Gothic, Saxon, etc...). So the argument can be made that its still German regardless.

I also stated that it had Germanic origins, yes. However, there's also a lot more in it; English language is not simply a rehash of Proto-Germanic, but also Latin (from the Romans), Celtic (from the Celts and their respective kinsmen), and the various others. smile

The people who lived in the area we call 'France' already spoke a language made up of Latin and Celtic when the Franks arrived, and the core of their language is still largely Latinate, not Germanic...
