Well, in all technicalities, France was settled by the Franks, which were a Germanic tribe. And as a tribe, they spoke their own version of Proto-Germanic (which later evolved into Old Norse, Gothic, Saxon, etc...). So the argument can be made that its still German regardless.
I also stated that it had Germanic origins, yes. However, there's also a lot more in it; English language is not simply a rehash of Proto-Germanic, but also Latin (from the Romans), Celtic (from the Celts and their respective kinsmen), and the various others. smile
