I should be going next summer. I think I'll probably be in either Sapporo, Tokyo, or Aichi, although I've never heard of Aichi. I'll have to look it up.
Wherever they send me, they're supposed to give us like a couple weeks off towards the end, and I plan on going to Osaka to pick up on some kansai-ben. xd
Aichi's a prefecture, isn't it? Where Nagoya is.
I'm applying for JET this fall, so if I get in, I'll be going next summer too. I hope I make it!

My friend got sent to Sapporo and he says he's really enjoying it, but its hard work. But I'm thinking thats because our college (Ball State) is on some sort of stupid decellerated program, which kinda ticks me off since I've already got 100 and 200 level finished. But I guess I'll kind of have to get force catched up when I go. Hahahaha... sweatdrop

Anyone here yet? Living, studying, touring? If you are in the greater Tokyo area, maybe someday we forum members can set up a meeting and just have fun!

Im living in Japan now. Living in Ikebukuro in Tokyo! Having a forum members meeting sounds great! The only other person that I have met in Gaia is one of my mates (who I actually got into Gaia) he lives near Funabashi in Chiba.

For those who want to do JET, from what I've heard, don't make plans for placement in Tokyo. Since it's about the "internationalization of Japan."
Yeah, they have stats somewhere on the page, and during 2003-2004, out of over 6,000 JETs a whooping 12 were placed in Tokyo (over 200 were in Saitama, though, which is right next to Tokyo). I think if you get chosen to be a JET but request like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, they'll probably tease you and put you in Hokkaido. One guy came in to out class to talk to us about JET, and he said he requested those cities and instead got placed on a tiny island between Shikoku and Okayama. He stayed for 3 years so it couldn't have been all bad.

I've heard you're more likely to get one of your choices if you research and put a smaller city on there (and you can always request something that is near a big city biggrin ) I've also heard smaller cities are more likely to help you out with your rent and such (That guy I mentioned before had a fully furnished apartment and free rent, probably why he stayed there for 3 years)

If your really worried about placement you should try applying through Nova, Thats what I did, cause I had heard that getting a placement through Jet in Tokyo or Osaka was really hard. And I got Tokyo (well Saitama actually but only just and Im living in Tokyo!)

Is anyone here a teacher/assistant teacher in Japan?

Does working at Nova count?

i know nothing.

I'm torn. If I applied through Nova, I could get somewhere in the vincinity of Nagoya which is fine with me.... but the CIR position in the JET program sounds far more interesting/challenging.

I'll be looking into those as another route to get myself back here in Japan for a third time.

Ah...yes the beauty of a small city. Not to mention all the victims...imean...people to practice your Japanese on. Actually...come to think of it, they'll probably be trying to run you down if you're like the only English speaking person in a hundred mile radius to practice on... whee

I always hear horror stories about Nova,Aeon, and Geos...

But basically my main worry about going to Japan is hair care. Since the only salons that I heard of that deal with black hair are in Tokyo. I might might be burning up vacation days just to get a perm... crying

Ha, that's one of things i'm worried about should I end up in Japan for a year. I have really thick curly hair, and any humidity only makes it fuzzier (the thin dry air of colorado actually works to my advantage) so it will be twice as curly anywhere in Japan. I imagine in a country where everyone has straight thin hair the curly conditioners will be hard to come by. Shoes too, I'm going to be requesting care packages from home frequently. biggrin

Most definitely.
If I get to go on a summer exchange program and I lack that option, you'd be seeing me with an extra suitcase of haircare products. I'll be reading the intructions out loud to someone if I have to, I need my perm.
I hope it doesn't show as explosives since customs descidedly doesn't like me. (or my studded pants...)
Shampoo and conditioner, methinks, you can get away with.
I think I'll be good with the shoes, though. My feet haven't grown for like three years. Whoo size 6.5! (Although my messed up sneakers say 7-8.. stare )

As I've mentioned, my friend is in Sapporo till December, but he told me about what happened when he bought his cell phone a few days ago. Apparently all it cost him was 1 yen...and it came with a free watermelon. Then I saw a picture of it...and it still looks nicer than my phone. I'm gonna cry ;-;
