Sometimes the email wrote itself, flowing from ones finger tips as if the words had been there the entire time. Other times it didn’t matter how long she started at the blank screen, nothing seemed right. This was one of the later times.
Delilah sat in her home office, leaning back in her chair as she held down the backspace button to delete everything she had just written for the fourth, or was it fifth, time. Everything she put down just seemed either too cold and unpersonal or came across as ‘congratulations! I’m a forgotten prince in another country. Send me money and I’ll make you a princess.’ Both of those emails went straight into the trash unless you were dealing with a troll. No she needed something that walked a fine line between friendly and inviting but also presented itself with the business nature she wanted this to take.
“Why does nothing sound right.” She muttered to herself, pushing her chair back to take a small break and make some tea. With the weekend coming to an end, her window of opportunity was quickly closing. Come Monday the world would fall back into the rhythm of things resulting in this just becoming a business deal. In a way, it was. Delilah wasn’t interested in the woman personally but felt she had been unjustly put into a situation that was her family’s fault. Sitting back and doing nothing was not her style.
The problem was her beloved cousin. Mathias had, for lack of better words, screwed the pooch on this one. His attraction to her had led him to make an offer that had anyone else done it, would have been presented in a ‘let me help you help me’ sort of way. His had come off as ‘so can I have your number’. Typical.
Putting the water on the stove, Delilah leaned against her kitchen counter, the nail of her thumb resting against her lips as she thought. Imara Mason had impressed her personally if she was honest. Impressed her entire direct family which is why her father supported her in trying to extend and olive branch. She’d stood up for what was right, did what was needed and, above all, did it in a way that no court of law would find her at fault if Ned lost his mind. Again.
But Delilah didn’t want to just help the woman find a ‘job’ sort of say. With her connections and relations, she wanted to see the woman get what she honestly deserved. The problem was how strong willed and independent she had been told Imara was. Would she just see this as a ‘hand out’ and turn it away or take her up on it?
When the kettle whistled, she turned off the stove and grabbed her mug. The steam brushed her skin, making her close her eyes and smile. It was very similar to the comparison Imara had made in one of her blog entries and reminded Delilah of the hole in the wall restaurant she had tried over the weekend. The woman had a gift and a sense of adventure that came out in her writing so when Delilah had found several weeks worth of entries for ‘local’ places, she’d decided to see if Imara Mason was worth the effort or if she just let it all go.
The best answer Delilah could come up with was that she now had a new favorite bakery and Italian restaurant to go to.
While some of Imara’s adventures and exploits were not Delilah’s style, it really did open up her eyes to a city she thought she had known. For that, she thanked the woman.
Smiling then as she went back into her office, Delilah sat back down, put her steaming hot cup of tea to the side and placed her hands to the keys.
Hello Ms. Mason,
