With her morning classes finished, Delilah had about an hour and a half until she needed to be at the office for the few hours she put in each day. It was more like 20 to 30 a week but that was only because they refused to let her work full time given her school schedule and other activities. People sometimes wondered how she managed to do so much and do it well.

She'd never answer them but only smile because the truth was it sucked.

Sitting down at one of her favorite lunch bistros, Delilah was flipping through her phone as she waited for the response she knew was coming. Before she had left her apartment, she'd shot her cousin a text in a manner that she knew he couldn't refuse unless he was literally in the hospital.

O'briens. Ten minutes.

She'd heard the groaning from across town.

The text had Mathias already altering his afternoon plans for the day the instant he got it, not that it was a massive change, but his cousin was correct in the fact that, it was indeed an offer he could not refuse. Well, would not really. He could refuse it, but doing so without a legitimate - "I am dying" - level of excuse wouldn't cut it and the damage it would do to their long and delightful almost sibling like relationship wasn't worth the shirting of his schedule to go and... get what essentially amounted to a lecture from his little sister.

If he'd HAD a little sister.

But Delilah essentially filled the role in his life without actually filing it and there was very little the man wouldn't do for his cousin. In all honesty part of his crusade against their Uncle Ned was in no small part carrying out the blood feud she was unable to.

But that was neither here nor there.

Be there in eight. had been his reply, and so he walked into the bistro a few minutes shy of ten minutes after sending it, and made his way over to his cousin's seat, slipping into the seat across from her and leaning back, wearing his usual "I was going to go scout the city" attire of a comfy pair of jeans, an unmarked t-shirt, and his usual jacket.

"To what do I owe the honor of this lunch invite?" He asked. Knowing full well that she would tell him what he was in trouble for and better to not give her extra ammunition by guessing.

Her eyes had flickered to the door the moment it opened, sizing up his contrast of attire to that of her pencil skirt and blouse. Two sides of the same coin in a way no one would understand. No one needed to really. It was their lives, their relationship.

They protected each other as much as they could given the family that birthed them. That was why Delilah stood in the way of the rest of the family in coming down on the so-called 'black sheep'. It also helped that her father secretly agreed with her so when someone went all out and tried to take it out on her, well, it didn't end well.

"Don't play coy, Mathias." Delilah sighed, sitting back herself though with a more straight-up back than his lounging. "It's never suited you and you know I can see right through it." The waitress picked that moment to drop off the drinks Delilah had ordered for them. Only once she had stepped back at Delilah returned her gaze to the man.

"Take a guess at which one of your little 'incidents' earned you lunch this time."

"Well I scrubbed the heck out of the wall at Uncle Ned's new place - so I was hoping that one wouldn't count," Mathias ticked off on his hand raising his index finger. "And, look - the thing at the hospital sorted its self out..." He added his middle finger to showcase two incidents. "So really that one shouldn't be held against me anyway. The paintings all ended up back on the wall, even if they were routine tat..."

He sighed and reached out to pick up his drink, sipping it slowly before putting it back down.

"So I'm going to guess the first one, because Ned loves to give me guff even if I do come back and clean up," He said with a huff. "Though that was more for his night manager than him, she didn't deserve to deal with his bull..."

With a heavy sigh, Delilah reached down into the computer bag at her feet and pulled out what was clearly a new paper from the other day. Without bothering to say another work, she slid it across the table, pages folded back on one large photo and headline in the so-called 'gossip' section.

Mathias White at it Again read the opening of the article framing the photo of him with a stack of artwork in his arms from the hospital.

White Family black sheep allowed running amuck in local hospital....

"Sorted itself out, hm?" Delilah cocked her head in a way that said she begged to differ as she watched him before running a hand over her brow. "Mathias what the heck were you thinking? I don't care that artwork was stick figures priced at a million dollars. You literally just had to go, smile, and shake a few hands."

"How hard is that?!?"

Presented with photo evidence of his... meltdown... Mathias had the decency to squirm uncomfortably in his chair. He could already feel the flustered blush rising and he lowered his head to cough into his hand, knowing full well that he was just stalling to avoid answering her question, because in truth it - wasn't - hard.

For anyone but him.

"I mean, that is..." He started, stopped himself, and took a breath, trying to find the words that weren't immediately defensive because this was Delilah and she had probably gone through hell after that article had been posted just trying to defend him.

"I might have, allowed my personal bias to get in the way of ensuring the family's interests," He offered. "Kids in the pediatric ward had a blast though..."

Not that that really mattered - because of course the papers only wanted to highlight the fact that "the black sheep" was up to antics and that was more attention that he really liked. "But, yes, I..." he motioned at the picture and expressed in a single four letter word just how badly he messed up. "...up, and I'm sorry, especially after your dad went to bat for me to go in the first place. I should have thought how that would have reflected on you guys."

The papers, the tabloids, the gossip columns, adored when they allowed Mathias out 'without his leash' as one writer so thoughtfully called it. Every single one of them jumped when they could catch him in the act of something outrageous that just didn't sit well with 'society' as it deemed appropriate.

And yet half of them still considered him one of the most eligible bachelors in town. That was what happened when you came from such a family.

"That's the thing." Delilah sighed, slumping back into her chair as she looked across the table at him. "You don't think. At all. You act on impulse and on your gut reaction which, if I'm frank, would work great in the field your father wanted you to follow." Those red eyes shot up to lock onto his face, knowing it was a low blow.

But Mathias had done something that irked her more than normal and had disappointed the one person she hated seeing upset: her father.

Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes. "I'm sorry. I'm stretched a bit thin and this just pushed me over the edge." When she opened her eyes, gone was the mask she wore in public and in its place sat the face Mathias considered his sister.

The words were a verbal slap. Much like the other night with another woman whom he had attempted to apologize to, he physically winced. Yes, it was a low-blow, but one he knew he deserved. Richard had put his faith in Mathias for his experience on the matter, and had trusted him enough to have him go alone as the family rep. It should have been an easy - go and smile, shake hands, take pictures, bore the press sort of deal.

Instead he'd made an a** of himself, and by proxy, the man whom out of all of his "uncles" he most respected and admired. He would have to make it up to the man somehow - in his own way - a fitting apology that would take time for him to figure out how to do - but he'd do it.

His hand reached out and gently rested on one of hers, giving it a light squeeze. He could see the tired, knew she had to be burning the candle at both ends and the middle too.

"Nope, that's me to a t," Mathias offered in a soft tone. "No thoughts, head empty."

The memetic statement was not given in his normal tone of voice, but something pitched slightly off to make it sound like a cartoon character who was "slow."

"That makes me a himbo right?" he asked, trying to get her to smirk or laugh a bit, giving her a distraction. "Its so hard keeping up with you kids these days."

"Stop that." Delilah scolded, batting his hand away from her own as she shot him a very disapproving look. "I hate it when you bash yourself and talk down like that. We both know that you do have a decent head on your shoulders, and the makings of a brain somewhere in that hard head." Had she been sitting closer, she would have knocked on his head just to prove a point.

"But you prefer to act on impulse rather than take a moment to think about every player on the board. I think THAT is what upsets them more. Well, some of them. " Like her father. They say his potential. He had a good head on his shoulders and something else that many family members lacked.

Mathias had a heart.

And to protect that rare heart, she fought for him.

"By the way, old man, I'm only four years younger than you." Now she kicked him under the table, jerking it slightly as her eyes drifted back down to the paper with the horrible photo of him.

"Were they really THAT bad? I mean it is part of the same program you graduated from."

Thinking back to the photos made him grimace slightly, and he sighed, reaching up, he rubbed the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger and shook his head slowly.

"Honestly?" He started, taking a moment to eat the crow now rather than later. "They weren't that bad. I mean, they looked alright, but you could tell they were school projects of people working themselves to make a deadline. But no, plenty of people seemed to like them enough to fight me over it - mostly staff."

:"One of them called me blind, which amuses me," He said gently. "But, eh, like I said, I sorted it out and let it go as a wash - doesn't save me from making page 15 in the paper but hey..."

He did have a heart - a surprisingly large one, if given the chance to use it. But, it also meant he would go to battle for things as a matter of principle, even if he knew it was a losing one.

Especially if he knew it was a losing one.

"I'll freely admit that I... pitched a Uncle Ned level fit where it wasn't needed."

That finally got Delilah to crack a smile. Ned's fits were a thing of legend and they were only matched by the two-year-olds of the family who were denied candy for dinner. Most people just ignored it at this point.

But to hear Mathias claiming he hit that level? "Impossible." She grinned. "The entire hospital would have been up in arms about you whining if you had hit his level of a tantrum. Though the way I hear, they were already pretty upset."

There was a brow c**k there before she lifted one of her perfectly manicured hands and waved it off. "Think back a few years though. You were in their shoes and I'm right there as well. You know what lack of sleep and stress and grades does to a person. Though I do admit I would like to meet the staff member who called you 'blind'. Would like to shake their hand."

"Upset enough to call and verify that I was in fact, who I said I was, and represented the family," He let out a huff. "Which, thankfully whoever answered the phone that day at the White Building had an updated list or I'm sure I would have been politely escorted out of the building."

"As to her well," he gave a shrug. "I think she was a nurse, or some sort of physical therapist - she talked about having an appointment and..." He waved a hand. "I didn't really pay too much attention - she was quite the Pollyanna though, kept pointing out the upside and good in everything in the paintings."

He made a face then. "But yes, I am aware - and glad to be done with it all, it's bad enough meeting what deadlines I have as it is."

"They what?" Delilah found herself a bit surprised hearing that they had to call in to confirm who it was. "Well, that's a first in a long, long time. I can't think of the last time someone had to call in a confirmation on...wait, yes I can." Her fingers slowly tapped on the table a moment. "Luna at the Meta Gala when she tried to crash it using Aunt Trina's tickets."

The look she cast Mathias right then before covering a soft chuckle showed how much fun that had been to explain. Leave it to the girl though. She had taken the theme and run with it to be the talk of the evening.

For a split second, Delilah was interested in 'her' and then, when Mathias used that old of a movie to describe her, the thoughts went out the window. All sunshine and rainbows would not do well with broody when he got into one of his 'moods'.

The paintings were good though.

"So what deadlines do you have now, oh Mr. Bigshot."

"Sadly, not nearly as many as I'd like," Mathias said with a sigh. "That is to say, none, currently. And I'm pretty sure the last person who got my number..."

His phone buzzed as he spoke and he froze for a second, fishing it out of his jacket to squint at it in what was probably a bit more energy than a text would normally warrant, only to be followed by a grunt and look of raw, pure disappointment as he slipped it back into his pocket.

"Spam," He muttered, before shaking his head. "Anyway - I'm between projects - at least major ones."

"Though I did meet a fellow at the gym the other day and the thought came to me," He said tapping the table with his finger. "What's your over-under on a pet friendly gym?"

"You really should consider applying to the art galleries or..." When his phone buzzed, Delilah couldn't help but notice the speed in which he was fishing his phone out of his pocket. The timing served to make a point with the small line he was going for.

So he had given his number to someone and from the looks of it, they either hadn't returned the favor or were playing hard to get.

This should be interesting.

But his words shook her mind and she blinked at him. "My thoughts on what? A pet friendly gym?" Exhaling as she slipped her mind back into the more practical things, Delilah waved a hand for him to continue. "Going to have to give me more than that I'm afraid. If you are thinking goat yoga, no."
