Fender yes...But the Rickenbacker...I would never use one of thoes for jazz.

I'd really not go with a Rickenbacker for jazz. Rics are used for mainly rock and funk. If you want a good jazz bass, then pick up either a '72 Jazz Bass w/ flat-wounds or a Geddy Lee sig J-Bass w/ flat-wounds. Either way, if you get a bass for jazz, put flat-wounds on it. That usually helps flesh out the jazz 'tone'.

I recently saw a jazz combo play and the bassist was playing a top of the line washburn, it had a perfect tone that I was really impressed with, and when I got up to have a jam it was amazing, the neck was gorgous and it was effortless to play. It had some flatwounds on it, but I wish I had gotten the model make off the guy, it was a really impressive jazz bass.
