Rewi had never minded sitting idle. Some would call him lazy, but he wasn't of a mind to be bothered terribly how others saw him (being bothered was such a chore). Perhaps it was true that every now and then, if someone he cared very much about expressed a particular disdain for his behavior, he might feel a little guilty, but usually he tried to just be pleased with the world and those in it as they were and not be overly concerned with changing things.

Many Menehune thought he was lazy, but Rewi couldn't bring himself to go out of his way to try and change their feelings. Because as far as anyone else could see, it was true. He didn't like to work.

But Rewi didn't think he needed to set his body to any laborious tasks to be considered 'active.' He could be entirely still on the outside, while his mind was alight with wonder toward all the things the world offered when he chose to open his focus to what was available, rather than devoting any religious concentration and effort toward a single goal, as so many of his race did.

On this day, the sky was so especially beautiful...

Rewi lay on the bank outside the settlement of Malie, a place he still had yet to extricate himself from. He knew there would be more to see once he moved on, but was there really any hurry? The people here didn't judge him too harshly, he'd made a friend or two, and he was growing more and more accustomed to the water each day. The lake water of Malie in particular seemed so much more comparable to the swamp lands that he was used to over the rivers he'd had to travel to in order to make it to this point that Rewi almost didn't feel obligated to leave...

He would, of course. Malie wasn't his home, but it had been nicer to experience than he'd originally thought. All those concerns he'd had about leaving his home and losing the warmth of sunshine and the whisper of reeds... What foolishness. The sounds of the lake had followed him ever into Pale'iko, and the sun had trailed them every inch they swam.

    ...Except today.

And perhaps that was why Rewi thought the sky looked so exceptional today. A haze of foggy, fluffy, full clouds hung low and heavy in the sky, obscuring the sun entirely. In all his years, Rewi had never seen clouds so dark. He didn't think his parents or maybe even his grandparents had seen clouds so dark. Every single being had complained and complained that no significant rain had fallen in Kahikina for centuries. They'd had drizzles and sprinkles, but a good solid rain? Not since well before Rewi's time.

This display, even though it was still dry yet, was one of the most lovely the gods could have granted him. If he'd stayed at home, beneath the murky cover of Elehun's waters, he may have even missed it entirely...

But laying here, on the outskirts of Malie, Rewi could only think how alive he felt, to be blessed with such a beautiful and looming display.

Perhaps he was lazy. Perhaps there were very few things that could spur him into action and even fewer that could properly motivate him to feel impassioned, but neither did it feel like it was his place to be too overzealous or dedicate too much time and effort into a craft or project he could never perfect. The gods had been gracious enough to place him here, and to Rewi, it felt like it was his duty to enjoy the gifts of the land they had created.

When Rewi felt the first drop land on his marshy brown skin, he could only let out a soft, contented sigh.

x The Gift of Rain x

"So you're leaving." Seya's bottom lip jutted out in that way children did to let others know how displeased they were, and she crossed her little arms. "Even though it's raining now, and there's no reason to have a meeting on a drought, you're really still going to leave? You don't want to enjoy the clouds and wet and festivities with the happy people of Malie? Nowhere else will be so lively," she grumpily huffed. "Malie is the biggest, so we are the happiest."

Though his stay in the large settlement of Malie hadn't been especially lengthy, Rewi had come to see this girl as a friend. She'd shared many sights and much knowledge about the Kaha'iko way of life with him. She hadn't shunned him for being a lazy Menehune. She'd invited him on any endeavors she wanted to face and didn't seem to expect much more than his company. Seya, for all her few years, seemed quite wise and able to him, and Rewi respected her more than he might respect even his own family.

But it was time for him to press on. His mission was to bring him all the way to Noelani, whether it was already raining or not. Seya was a cute and sweet distraction, but he'd set out from his home determined to complete this one task, this one time... He couldn't be stopped.

So, Rewi nodded at her question and smiled apologetically down at the young girl. "Yyyyep!" He purred out on a hum. "I'm afraid it's time for me to get going. I spent a little too long here, as is, and I have people waiting for me to return home with any news they might need." Though somehow Rewi doubted they needed much news, anymore. But on another thought, maybe it wasn't even raining in the swamplands yet? He had no way of knowing anything happening back there, or what his family might be saying about him...

    Were they even worried?

Unimportant for the moment, Rewi decided. Seya was in front of him, and he could see argument in her eyes. "You know the rivers will get rough if you try to travel through them while it's raining. We're safe in the lake, but the downstream currents can turn wild and fierce. It's bordering dangerous to leave."

As always, she was pretty good at knowing more about her home than he was. Rewi hadn't considered what a downpour might do to the river, but to be honest, it didn't matter. He was determined to press forward.

"You worry too much," he retorted with a shrug. "If it happens that the river pulls me back to Malie against all my attempts to go north, then that ought to suit you just fine." It would mean wasted effort on Rewi's part, and he wasn't particularly fond of that idea, but he would deal with it when it happened, if it happened. "Anyway, I only came by to give you a present."

That caught her attention handily, and Seya was briefly startled into silence as Rewi pulled his very first special creation from his sack of supplies.

"What is it... supposed to be?"

Admittedly, first creations weren't always the best, but he found he wasn't offended by the question. Rewi grinned sheepishly. "You like dolls. You showed me your collection. I brought along some of the swamp reeds from my farm to use for trading along the way to Noelani, but... I thought you might like a swamp doll to add to your collection. She's one-of-a-kind, you know... Special made just for you. Her name is Rain."

'Rain' was a murky colored sack filled mostly with sand and a few of the sturdy, stiff reeds to give her shape. Her hair was made of billowy swamp grasses, and her colors were composed almost entirely of those of swamp mosses.

She was soft and dressed in the colors Rewi was most accustomed to, but quite far from beautiful.

Seya's fingers moved gingerly over her present, and the sound she made was a soft, quite acceptance. "She's... she's lovely," Seya murmured. "I will treasure her." For a child to say any such thing seemed silly, but Rewi found he believed it. "I'll take care of her for you, and I'll see you on your way back from Noelani."

Neither of them said goodbye, after that, but Seya's expectation of a future meeting somehow filled him with vigor for the road ahead.
