Rowan, Sam
[Rowan calls Sam in regards to the stolen roach.]

With a short sigh Rowan dialed the number the zookeeper had given her their last visit. She was a bit anxious about having to explain what happened and made a note to make Dior apologize in person as well. These lessons had to be taught on the spot. She started to coil her finger around the telephone cord as it rang.

Sam: "Durem Zoo, Head Keeper Sam speaking."

Rowan: "Sam I'm happy to hear your voice. How have you been? This is Rowan, Dior's guardian if you recall. It hasn't been too long but you never know!"

Sam: "Oh hello Rowan! It's so nice to hear from you! Yes, I remember. Hard to forget your golden girl. I've even met another Raevan since you came to visit."

Rowan: "I'm glad to hear you're well. I would love to hear all about them, but first there is something I must tell you and the reason for this call. Firstly let me apologize before we start. You see, my golden girl just so happens to have brought home a critter from the zoo. We'll be returning it first thing in the morning. I'm so sorry if you've noticed, specially after your kindness. Hopefully it's not too terribly doomed since she has fed it just about everything... I'm sure Dior will have a few words with you too."

Sam: "Taken an animal from the zoo? I haven't noticed anything missing. What did she take?"

Rowan: "One of those big roaches, the noisy ones."

Sam: "Oh! Hmm, hang on a second. Hey Tau, go count the roaches...............one of them gone? Yeah I think so too. Hey Rowan, I have an idea. Care to hear me out?"

Rowan: "Oh?"

Sam: "Well the cockroaches are pretty hardy creatures but also prone to escape. I know you might want to teach Dior a lesson but I have an idea of how we can teach her too. And maybe your nephew as well."

Rowan: "I'm all ears, what do you have in mind?"

Sam: "Well I can come visit, inspect the little roach to make sure he's healthy. Then challenge Dior to properly take care of it or I'll take it away from her. I'll explain it can die if not properly cared for. So she will have to learn all about cockroach and how to keep it safe and happy."

Rowan: "Hmmm. I do like the sound of that. But as is common with children I will probably be picking up after it. I do wonder if it's wise to let her keep it but I suppose it's about time she learned about responsibility and what better time than now? Again I apologize for her actions and she will too, just you wait. When can we expect you?"

Sam: "Its actually somewhat easy to take care of. After all it's small enough not to leave too much of a mess. It's ensuring proper nutrition that is the biggest thing. Also I had an idea for your nephew, from Tau actually. He had a feeling around him and wants to give Dior and Rhys a lesson in Egyptian mythology. I can come by this weekend if that is alright."

Rowan: "I'm quite relieved to hear that. I was thinking it might die somewhere along the way from eating Gods knows what... what is the proper nutrition? We can start that now. Say hello to Tau for me will you? And Egyptian mythology? Hah! He's going to love that, and so will I actually. You know you are both welcomed to my house any time. I hope you'll be staying for lunch as well."

Sam: "Nice fresh veggies are the biggest thing. They do need a proper source of protein in pellet form. High protein content. Dry dog food is usually good."

Rowan: "My neighbor just happens to have a dog, it will be no problem. Thank you so much for your understanding Sam. I'll make it a surprise, I'm sure they'll be thrilled to see you both!"

Sam: "I look forward to it! Tau does as well! We will see you this weekend."

Rowan: "Farewell Sam, see you then!"

Dior, Rhys

Tiger the Madagascar Hissing Roach now lived in a cardboard box. Said box was now in the middle of the room with Rhys and Dior surrounding it. The fate of the roach had yet to be decided, but it might as well have a nice home, which was what the two children were now doing.

“You can make the other side when I’m finished,” Rhys informed her scribbling away a lopsided window. As far as he was concerned this was a work of art. Dior on the other hand was on the floor testing the crayons. She scrapped the wax off with her nail and blew the pieces at Rhys. Tiger rested beside her thigh, its antennas twitching lazily.

“This is for you,” she told it pointing at the box with her crayon. “I have a room too, let me show you.” The frei held her hand out and the insect approached it to inspect it. Now that it deemed it safe it crawled on board. She ran her index finger along it’s back making the pet do the hissing it was well known for. Rhys glanced at them and Dior giggled. The young boy rolled his eyes and returned to his project.

Meanwhile Dior had much to show her new pet.

“This is mines. My bed, my table, my door…” she shook the doorknob. “My clothes,” she opened the drawer and took out a few garments to display. The roach girl then stuffed it all back in not bothering to fold it.

“And my stuff,” she floated and bent over as best as she could, her cheek touching the floor. Under the bed were several empty water bottles she had found in Rhys’ room, a bolt of yarn, some rocks, some leftover shriveled up lilies, and other miscellaneous items.

“This one’s my favorite one,” she told Tiger, showing it a piece of chain. She twirled it around to demonstrate its use. Dior didn’t think the roach was even paying attention, but then it twirled!

Well, walked in a circle to be exact. She stopped what she was doing with the chain only to do one swing, Tiger copied it.

Now with newfound enthusiasms she twirled it clockwise and was thrilled when the roach did too. “Spin!” She announced and took her pet in her hands and flew back downstairs. “Brother, look!”

A disgruntled Rhys looked up. Couldn’t she see he was busy?

“Spin,” she told Tiger and after a brief minute’s hesitation it did. Unfortunately Rhys had not been looking.

“You can’t teach a cockroach like a dog that’s stupid. Their brains -if they have those- are too small to understand. They just know food, and water,” Rhys told her matter-of-factly.

Dior’s brow furrowed and she tilted her head to display her confusion. “Spin?” She looked at Tiger and so did Rhys. Much to her disappointment the roach did not do as she asked this time.

She stared at the roach in her hands wondering exactly what had changed. Maybe it was shy.

“Ok I’m done,” Rhys said triumphantly. “Come on put him in there, does he like it?”

Still wondering about roach's obedience earlier, Dior did as he asked and together they held their breaths in anticipation. The roach’s antenna’s matched Dior’s occasional twitching and finally they breathed when it seemed it settled on one corner.

“Yea he likes his room.”

Dior, Rowan

When Ethiriel had shown her what she could do with her silver crown, Dior had wanted to do the same immediately. It was easier to watch and be amazed than to try, however.

As she hovered over her bed with her pet roach obediently watching she concluded that this was very difficult.

She didn’t know how to do it. Or what to do. The roach girl tried to visualize a crown like the one Ethiriel had. Her antennas only twitched in response and after two minutes she let out the breath she hadn’t realized she was holding and flopped on the bed.

Dior pulled the strings of her hoodie to shut her face in and sighed. Did she need a magic word? Ethiriel hadn’t said anything. She had just… done it. The sigel had said it would be deep inside her. Maybe at the tip of her ribbon?

Frustrated she flipped onto her chest and groaned. “I want a crooown,” she moaned into the pillow. How did magic work?

“Oh!” As if a lightbulb had lighted up with the energy of the sun Dior sprung out of bed and hurried next door. “Ro?” She peeked into the room and quickly shut it back when it was evident her guardian was nowhere in sight.

She scurried downstairs and nearly ran into the bookshelf. “Ro!”

The witch was enjoying a fresh cup of tea while reading a book. She turned her attention to the source of the voice and gave her a kind smile.

“How rare to see you up so early!” And then upon seeing Dior’s troubled face, “Did you have a bad dream?”

The blonde shook her head and came closer. “You know magic, yea? Can you teach me?”

This inspired a sudden laugh of relief from the witch. “With such a serious face I thought perhaps someone had thrown a rock through your window!”

Dior’s expression didn’t change, if anything she looked more insistent now.

“Ethiriel can make a silver crown and it can go away or come back and I want one!” She came closer.

“Ethiriel?”

“She’s a raevan like I, and she has magic. She said she was made of silver and gold has silver, so I can do what she can too! I’ve been trying so hard and nothing’s working! Gah! … what if I don’t have any?”

The sudden burst made Rowan set her book down and give Dior her full undivided attention.

“When did you meet Ethiriel? Where?” Had she gotten hold of the contact list and gone through it, she wondered. She held her by the shoulders and looked at her intently. “Everyone is made differently. You were born from magic itself, I can promise you the magic’s in you. When the time is right it will present itself to you, naturally and without worries. You can’t force it, the more you try to grasp at it the more it will evade you magic is fickle like that.”

This answer did not satisfy the frei. She sighed with annoyance and started to bite the inner layer of her cheek.

“But there are ways to encourage it,” Rowan informed her upon seeing the disappointment. Dior brightened at the sound of that.

“Through discipline. Quieting the mind will allow you to hear and feel the magic. Meditation is painless and good for the mind. It’s a good way for introspection.”

“Sounds boring.”

Rowan gave her a look. “A little time sacrificed is all it takes. You don’t have to do much but look within yourself…” Dior did not look impressed and the witch could just tell she was losing her.

“Ethiriel didn’t meditate,” she told her, not that she knew whether the sigel had or not. “She just thought about it, and the crown grew and ungrew!” She shifted her wings.

“How about you try it and see for yourself?” Rowan kissed her forehead and brought her close into a hug. Dior wrapped her arms around her in return.

“Okaaay,” she replied and floated back to see what this meditation business was all about.

User Image

There had been no Gods coming down to tell her how to make a gold crown, or any voices, visions or well, anything, really. After the meditation session Rowan had started to make lunch and now Dior found herself back in her room with Tiger on her lap.

“Maybe I’m not made from unbreakable gold,” she muttered to herself. Did the type of gold or silver matter? Maybe unoxidized silver made crowns and sun gold made… uh hair or something?

She couldn’t deny that she had felt more at ease after the meditation class, but it had not solved her dilemma. Dior yawned and curled up with Tiger. Maybe she could ask Ro after this nap. With thoughts of crowns and metals she slipped into a comfortable sleep.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* [All That Glitters Pt. II] *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Dior, Rowan, Rhys

By morning she had forgotten all about the pressing matters of magic. Her loyal pet roach woke her with ticklish kisses and little hisses. She pushed him away wanting to catch a few seconds extra of sleep but she found it hard to get back into slumber.

“Thanks a lot,” she grumbled at Tiger. She pet it affectionately and in a sudden burst of energy threw the covers aside and flew out of bed. “There’s work to be done Tiger!” she announced and zipped on downstairs.

If she had given the calendar more attention she would not have been so surprised to see Rhys at the dinner table.

“Oh! I missed you so much,” she tackled him with a strong affectionate hug. “Why must you leave?”

“I have parents you know!” he replied trying to push her off. It was too early for this! “Getoff I’m trying to eat!”

“Good morning Dior. Do take a seat I have your lilies right here,”
Rowan had arranged the platter in, what she thought to be, an aesthetically pleasing display. Briefly she wondered if Dior didn’t mind eating this every day. Perhaps for that very reason she had sprinkled some gold foil on top.

Dior had wanted to drag Rhys and tell him about the magic and meeting of another raevan but the sight of food made her reconsider.

The witch had not even set the plate down before Dior grabbed a handful of leaves and stuffed them in her mouth.

“Dior what did I say about that! Manners!” Rowan joined them at the table with her own freshly made hot tea and omelet.

Dior grinned through a mouthful of lilies. Then the flavor of gold hit her and her eyes lit up. She examined the plate closer and started to pick out the bright parts. They melted on her tongue. It was a terrible tease as it was not enough to fully enjoy but enough to appreciate.

“Are you done yet?” She asked Rhys getting rather impatient. The frei had gulped down her meal trying to catch up to Rhys’ pace but it seemed the young boy had not made any progress. Even Rowan had had enough time to wash and dry her plate!

“Yeah? Why?”

“I have to tell you something!” And it that moment it she considered it good luck for a customer to have come in. Now that Rowan was gone she spilled the beans about magic and Ethiriel and crowns and metals.

“Really?” Rhys’ eyes had lit up. He had always found the raevans an interesting bunch. They were cool. He was slightly disappointed he couldn’t meet this other girl she sounded like she could do some tricks. “Well what can you do then?” he asked taking a sip from his juice. “You’re practically made of the stuff so I’m sure you can do something. Can you make a crown?”

Dior shook her head sadly.

“I tried last night and I asked Rowan cause you know she does this stuff too but nothing happened! So then she started with this whole meditation thing and how it would-“

“-calm the mind and nourish the spirit-“

[color#CFB53B]“-exactly! But it didn’t work. So I thought maybe you would have some idea.” She looked at him expectantly.

“Uh well I can’t really do magic yet. I mean sometimes I hear voices but I don’t know if they’re ghosts or something…”

“Ghosts?”

“Well you know spirits.”

“Do I have a spirit?”

“Everything that moves and breathes has a spirit.”
Rhys told her matter-of-factly. That was just logic. “But I can hear them better after meditating so maybe there’s some truth to that…” it’s not like Rowan had years of experience in this magic business or anything.

They both looked thoughtful.

“If I hear voices what should I tell them?”

Rhys giggled.

“I don’t know. When I try to talk back to mines they never respond. I don't think they’re aware that I can hear them. Maybe they’re not aware I exist.” He shrugged feeling the whole experience bizarre. Dior let out an exasperated sigh.

“I’m going to go meditate,” she announced. “Wanna come?”

Rhys didn’t feel like meditating but early was better than late. And he was supposed to do it everyday… and besides Dior's excitement was contagious.

“Ok…”

“Yes!!” She gave him a hug and skittered off to tell Rowan.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* [All That Glitters Pt. III] *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Dior, Rhys, Rowan

Meditation turned into a nap. When Rowan found them basking in the afternoon sun she couldn't help but to smile with fondness.

The matter about the crown was forgotten for the moment. It was difficult to stay focus on discipline when there was fun to be had.

Now that she found herself alone in her room Dior started to mix and match some outfits. She wasn't terribly picky but there were some tops she was partial to and it showed in their wear. A particular favorite item of hers was the forest green sweater. It was soft and had extra long sleeves she loved to pull over her arms.

"Hurry up!!"

"I'm done!" she replied slipping the sweater on. She gave her hair the barest of pats to settle some stray strands and deemed herself ready. "Letsgoletsgo."

She nearly tripped over her ribbon if such a thing were possible. They hardly heard Rowan yell at them to slow down. Lucky for them a customer had just entered and she would soon be preoccupied while they went off behind the store.

They spent the afternoon in an invigorating match of hide and go seek tag. Rhys kept complaining that Dior was cheating because she had wings to flutter around and Dior whined that he peeked while he was counting. It was in the middle of their bickering that Rowan found them covered in dirt from head to toe.

She cleared her throat.

"I hope in the next two hours when lunch is ready both of you are squeaky clean! Now inside!" she herded them back to get cleaned up.

Dior was already thinking of skipping the shower since it was a waste of time. The concept of standing there getting wet was foreign to her. You couldn't read in the shower, or draw, or anything really.

Now that Dior found herself in the middle of her room, she laid her eyes on the colorful tops and closed her eyes to pick one from the bunch. The winner was a black spaghetti strap shirt. She slipped into it easily enough, a bath not being in the equation besides Rhys was occupying the restroom, and flopped on the bed.

Her most recent fascination started with fashion magazines. They held such interesting pictures! Could someone really wear a dress so weird? Why did women walk on their toes? Where could she get a jacket with a million spikes and diamonds?? And those huge bug eye glasses!

She turned her page and her eyes nearly burst out of their sockets at the sight of the fluffiest jacket she had ever seen. It resembled the animal skin downstairs by the coffee table and until now she didn't think it could be worn.

The thought that it couldn't be used in Summer never crossed her mind. With a small finger she traced over the figure and she could have sworn she could feel the fluff. She wanted it.

Then, much to her surprise, something started to ooze out of her fingernail. She wasn't startled by it, if anything she thought the fluffy coat looked better covered in it anyways and started to rub the liquid gold to cover it. Now that she was done she had to show Rowan (and Rhys) and see about getting that item. With the sparkles she had added of course.

She rushed outside and ran into Rhys who had been getting out of the shower.

"Watch it!" He snarled rubbing his shoulder.

"Sorry! Look!" She stuffed the magazine in his face for half a second before taking it to show Rowan.

"Ro! Look! I need it!" she hoped she conveyed enough sense of urgency because this was such a case.

Rowan took a moment from setting the plates to look over her shoulder. She didn't recall having such an article in the house, but her mother might have had .

she asked curiously. The light caught on the page in a way that made her squint closer. She didn't recall owning such ink, and if the stains on Dior's shirt were anything to go by it might have been glue. Had she gotten her hands on liquid gold thinking she could eat it? "What happened here?" She approached her tapping on the page.

"I need it! Just look at it I can feel it's softness," she hugged the magazine close to her heart caring very little to the crumpled mess it was becoming.

"Dior it's not cold enough for such a fur coat. Although it has been snowing recently... where did you get this ink?" She gestured to the evidence.

As if she had just been reminded of the more important part of the conversation Dior beamed.

"Look, ok?" She focused on the table and put her finger on it. Nothing happened it. She looked at her nail curiously trying to figure out what its problem was now. "It was working a second ago," she mumbled picked at it to see if it would work. It only happened when she put it on the coat.

In a sudden spur of inspiration she set the wrinkled magazine on the table and looked at it. She could reeeeaally use it. As if on queue the gold started to ooze out much to Dior's delight and Rowan's puzzled face.

The witch's expression however turned soft and then she puffed up like a proud parent. She scooped up her ward in a tight hug and told her of how proud she was and that see, she could do anything she set her mind to!

Dior's antennaes quivered with delight and she hugged the witch back. "I'm going to go do more," she stated and hurried back upstairs completely forgetting about acquiring the item for the time being.

Rhys approached the magazine with a thoughtful look on his face. He had been born into a family of magic and had yet to cast a single spell or even show any evidence of magic. All of his cousins had been showing signs since the moment they were born! Was he an exception?

"In due time Rhys, your great grandfather was a late bloomer too. It's not completely uncommon," Rowan's voice made him look up. She was setting the plates down. "Give it some time," she smiled at him. Rhys sighed but merely nodded. It did make him feel better, but waiting another ten years until he could start practicing? He didn't like that idea not one bit.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* [Reflection] *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Rowan

‘These magical beings known as raevans learn at a fast pace. Already Dior has a solid grasp on language although reading proved a brief struggle.

The other night she revealed the most peculiar ability, the ability to bring forth gold. The quantity may not be much, but I wonder if in the comings years it will increase, and if it does what would it mean for her future?

What dangers would it bring? The citizens of Gaia have been known for their greed. That they use gold coins as their main currency would put a target on the girl’s back.’ The witch paused in her writing, contemplating the last sentence.

‘She has not grown much if anything her hair got longer and her antennas firmer. A rather bubbly and carefree personality shines bright within her.

Rhys on the other hand has entered high school and my sister insists on public school rather than our traditional homeschooling methods. I have approached the subject of magic with him but Rhys denies any changes.

I can see and feel it within him, the source of our family’s magic, something that he needs to tap into himself. I wonder if the lack of this birthright is what is making him so moody lately. Dior has not been shy with dripping gold all over the house, or on him.’

Rowan chuckled at the memory. She dipped the quill in the ink pot and cleared it’s excess ink on the edge. The parchment was smooth to the nib and made it easy on her wrist.

‘As a helper Dior has proved to be quite the obedient child, although most of her tasks are left unfinished. She has a tendency to sweep the dust under the rug, or wash half the dishes and forget about the rest.

I know very well she can finish the tasks if she puts her mind to it and I have had to get creative to see them accomplished to the very end.’

The quill lingered over the paper.

‘There is one thing that worries me. Last winter I received a lovely brooch from my sister. Although gold in appearance it is actually brass. I remember quite clearly where I left it, in my private drawers with the rest of the others.

When I sweeped under Dior’s bed, I received quite a surprise. Among other items, there was my brooch! At some point I thought perhaps I had left it on the counter downstairs, but I am old - not senile.

I asked her where she had taken it from and she stated she did not remember, but if I liked I could have another one from her collection! Imagine!

I gave her an introductory talk on Stealing and Morals. Unfortunately I could see clearly it had gone in one ear and out the other. Nothing else other than pebbles and pens and other random objects make it into her pile, but for a young girl not only is it unhealthy it is a terrible nasty habit.’

The candle flickered, making Rowan’s shadow dance on the wall. She wiped the ink on a towels and then stood to wash the nib with water. Once she was done she placed the quill back on its stand and closed her tome. The gilded pages glinted in the presence of the candlelight.

Rowan, Dior, Rhys

It was a typical Sunday morning in the Bluestone household. All chores had been done by now and so the trio now enjoyed the rewards of a fresh and wholesome brunch.

“Dior stop chewing with your mouth open it’s unladylike,” Rowan reminded her while she stirred her soup with her spoon.

Dior promptly closed her mouth looking rather startled at having been caught. She chewed in an exaggerated manner as if she had a lump of gum rather than a mouthful of veggies. Her eyes peered over to Rhys who had been buttering his small bread roll and just happened to look up.

The girl smiled at him -veggies and all- and Rhys gave her a look of disgust.

“Ro she’s doing it again!”

“Dior!”

With a giggle she covered her mouth with her hand and returned to her meal.

“I was thinking since you were both so good at finishing your chores early we could go to the electronics store,” Rowan dipped a piece of bread waiting for the info to sink in.

“Is it for the cellphone? I got straight As for all quarters!” Rhys announced suddenly. Dior swallowed her food and looked pensive for a moment.

“I showered this morning.”

“So?? So did I!”

Rowan sighed. “Yes. I was speaking to your mother last night and I think it’s time you have a way to communicate with us when you’re away on field trips or out with friends. Imagine having the need to call an ambulance but you can’t, or rehearsal got canceled and you need me to pick you up. And you’ve been doing very well in your studies, thus I think it’s a fitting reward and your mother agrees.”

“What did Dior do to deserve it then?”

“I just told you!”

“I do that every morning, and have been doing it for the past years of my life!”

“Well Rhys, Dior here has been quite diligent in helping our customers find what they need. I often hear what a dutiful and polite girl she is!”

“Polite??”

Dior stuck her tongue out at him. “I know how to be professional,” she stated matter-of-factly.

Rowan wouldn’t exactly call it professional but there was a certain charm in the way she handled conversation, and making customers feel like they’re the only ones that mattered was a key skill in building relationships. The girl’s chattiness worked well in the environment.

“Now that we’re done we can either sit here wondering what we all did to deserve the cellphone, or, we could get ready and be on our way. Hmm?” She gave them both a pointed look. It didn’t take much for the two to rush upstairs.

User Image

Rowan had not needed a cellphone for the majority of her life. They had not been a “thing” until recent years. Walking into the store and seeing the different kinds of models was rather overwhelming. What was the difference between the big one with half a keyboard and the sleek model with only one button?

“Hello good day! Welcome to Barton Town’s Electronics! We have everything you need from tablets to cell phones and drones and batteries. My name is Pasc how can I help you?” A young man greeted them the minute they walked through the door and Rowan was secretly glad for the help.

“Good afternoon Pasc. We’re here to see what kind of deals you are running in the cell phone category. We’re all in dire needs of one,” her eyebrows rose as she eyed yet another wall of phones.

“Do you have the latest iPhone?” Rhys inquired peering over the counter.

The man let out a light hearted laugh. He then unlocked the cabinet and took out a sleek fine model.

“You’ve come to the right place! This here has just about everything you need. They come with these new smaller and longer lasting batteries. Hours and hours of texting and games! We also have androids.”

Rowan held the devices in her hand. Fiddling with one and then the other. She wasn’t quite sure what she was looking for but they were rather easy to pick up. Dior did the same.

The roach girl wasn’t too interested now that she held one but seeing Rhys so engrossed in the apparatus made her reconsider. There has to be something she was missing. She looked over his shoulder. The boy was dashing around tapping everywhere and Dior couldn’t keep up.

“What else can you do with it?” She asked almost in a whisper as to not interrupt his concentration.

“You can text, email, call, games, make appointments, uuuh,” Rhys paused as he returned his attention to the phone. “Send pictures,” he shrugged. “You can do it anywhere that’s the best part. I could be in school and call you when you’re in bed.”

Oooh that sounded nice. She wouldn’t have to get out of bed and pick up the phone? Sold.

“I want one.”

Rowan had been deep in conversation with the salesman. Luckily for them they had come at the perfect time to snatch a deal that only came out every three years. Unlimited data and all.

“When in comparison to the other deals this seems to be the most fair. We’ll go ahead and take the three.”

“Excellent choice! What color would you like we currently have black, jet black silver, rose gold, white and gold.”

“Gold.”

“Black.”

“I’ll take a silver, please.”

Quickly Pasc got the cases and totaled the amount. “Just sign this contract real quick, aaand you’re good to go.”

Rowan looked at her watch and was surprised they had spent so much time in the store. It was nearing evening and while they were free for the rest of the day she figured they could stop by the ice cream parlor on the way back. It was that kind of day.
