Who: Holle, Dior When: Mid-afternoon Where: Forest on the outskirts of Barton Weather: Sunny, slightly windy
Holle clutched her phone between both hands like it was her only anchor to life, and drew in a deep, long breath. The Frei had never called anyone by herself before—Nina always foot the responsibility—but her guardian's expectation that she start to do things on her own began with this first step. And she had to do this own her own; Nina made it quite clear she couldn't "make her more friends beyond just plants."
Plants were wonderful, but they just weren't the greatest conversation partners.
Steeling her resolve, Holle looked to the number she had punched in on her phone. The contacts list that her mother had hung up on the refrigerator door was a treasure trove of potential friends, but the Frei couldn't call up every single one and start an impromptu slumber party. So she settled on one, another Frei by the name of Dior, and hoped for the best.
Whenever someone picked up the phone, Holle sputtered out the script she had written in one fell swoop, "H-hi! My name is Holle Swan and I am a Raevan from the lab and I was wondering if you wanted to hang out or something because I would love to meet you and if you can tell me when and... and..."

Nina cast eyes to the forest edge, to the Frei looking about excitedly like a teased puppy, and then down to the basket wedged onto the her forearm. She wasn't too thrilled about this, despite how proud she was Holle did something by herself for a change. She had never left the Frei alone before; considering she had a penchant to wander, and an even worse trait of letting curiosity get the better of her, Nina always feared the worst. This worry had now skyrocketed when Holle's definition of hanging out meant wandering the local forest with the Raevan she invited out.
"Y'know, sweetie, we could go back home with your new friend," Nina said, nudging her. "I could rent a movie on demand, get a few blankets, pop some popcorn. Just the three of us."
"Uh-uh, mama," Holle said, shaking her head. "You promised you had no problems with me being on my own today. So I wanna explore."
"Yes, I know, sweetie, I do. But you've never been—"
"Mama." Holle leveled a stare at her; the same she would constantly throw the Frei's way when she misbehaved. "You said it yourself, I gotta start doing things on my own, so I am! Give me a chance, okay?"
Nina relented with a sigh. "Fine," she replied, "but I won't leave until I know she's here, okay? Then you two can do as you please."
"Okay!" Holle cried, pacified completely by her guardian's reply. "Now where is she...?"

It had not been too long since a phone came to be in Dior's possession. She had spent the majority of that afternoon fiddling with it.
When Rhys had called her out of nowhere she had stared at the screen long and hard. And when she heard his voice through the speaker she had to wonder really hard how he had fit in such a small object.
It turned out it wasn't magic. She had tuned out the second half of Rhys' explanation and just accepted as technology.
She was experimenting with the settings when a call came through. It was from an unknown number and although Rowan had told her not to answer any weird calls her curiosity got the best of her.
"Hello-?" She hadn't even finished saying the greeting when a torrent of words blasted through. Another Raevan? Dior perked right up.
"Hi!! It's a pleasure to meet you Holle Swan," she parroted as she had been taught. "Yes lets meet! Right now!" The roach girl didn't need any more convincing. "I have the perfect spot too!"
Rowan glanced at the outsiders from the other side of a window. The witch had nearly had a heart attack when she found out Dior's plan.
The girl had not asked for permission to leave she simply had waltzed right by her with phone in hand making plans to meet someone.
When Rowan found out the details of said plan her mind couldn't help but think of it as a trap. How naive the young were of the evils that lurked waiting to pounce at the sight of an opportunity.
She had looked over the contact list to see if the name matched and breathed a sigh of relief when the Swan household came up.
They were going to have a nice long chat about going out without permission. One thing was Rhys taking her to go get milk right around the corner, another was traveling to the outskirts of Barton to meet someone she had never met before.
She was brought back to the present moment at the sound of Dior squealing when the bus lulled to a stop.
"I wonder what she's like," she nearly flew out of the bus in search of her new Raevan friend.
"Dior slow down!" She was worse than taking Rhys to the phone store.
It didn't take too long to find the distinctive ribbon that indicated a raevan. Dior flittered right over to give her a big hug as if they hadn't seen each other in years.
Rowan took her time coming up on the pair and readjusted the sling of her purse before introducing herself to whom she presumed was the guardian.
"Good afternoon," she greeted the woman amiably. "I am Rowan Bluestone and this is my ward, Dior. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Nina I assume?"

A low wind cast itself over the area, whipping up not just the dead leaves at Nina's feet, but her uneasiness as well. Truth: she expected a myriad of complications to arise from this. Truth: she couldn't deny how much she adored seeing Holle so happy. Both feelings left her at a crossroads as their expected invitees arrived.
Holle's eyes glittered with mirth at the friendly gesture, and she replied in kind by embracing Dior just as tight. She even felt inclined to spin them around; something she'd seen on television once. The action seemed to lose half its meaning with the lack of legs and feet, but it brought an unmatched joy to the Frei's face.
She held Dior at arms length to regard her better, but Rowan's introduction tore her attention away momentarily. Just as Nina opened her mouth to bid hello, Holle interjected, "Hi, I'm Holle Swan! This is definitely my mama, Nina Swan! It's nice to meet you!" She inclined her head towards Dior. "Both of you!"
Formalities out of the way, Nina pushed her glasses up higher on the bridge of her nose. "It's a pleasure, Rowan. Unless you prefer Ms. Bluestone?" She extended her only arm to greet the woman for a handshake, face wearing a somber smile. "And... my apologies, as well, for the sudden invitation. You see, Holle here took my encouragement to make friends into her own hands by... inviting out someone randomly on the contacts list we were provided from the lab. As much as I admired her enthusiasm, I never considered what troubles it could cause. I hope the trip out here wasn't long?"
Holle jerked her head sharply toward her guardian. "Mama, there weren't any troubles at all!" she cried. "They got here just fine, didn't they?"
Nina thinned her lips. "Holle," she admonished, causing the Frei to puff out her cheeks in a pout.

Dior was more than happy to indulge in the spin. Or floating twirl. It reminded her of the tornadoes she could make by swishing around a water bottle.
“Rowan is just fine thank you. It was no trouble getting here, the weather is perfect for the occasion so I suppose Holle couldn’t have chosen a better day,” she gave Nina a warm and inviting smile.
“It was a good thing I was able to cross reference your household from the list! Imagine my surprise when I caught her sneaking out the door to meet with a stranger. My heart nearly failed me,” she gave the back of Dior’s head a stern look. There was no escaping that talk alright.
Dior crossed her arm with Holle’s and started to lead her down the path. Rowan followed at a distance behind them. Two young girls unaccompanied in the forest was just begging for trouble.
“I wish we came here more often. Do you live around here? I know this perfect area it’s right near the water and no one else visits it. I mean I think it’s a little out of the way but it’s quiet. And there’s like this meadow full of butterfly bushes. And hummingbirds! We can see other colorful birds! I have a book and binoculars. Do you like birds?”
The sidewalk ended and became a trail. The sound of rushing water could be hear faintly on the right. Dior’s antennas swished around lazily always on the hunt for gold. Behind the girls Rowan held her hands clasped in front.
“To think they grow up so fast,” she started casually. “Although such an experience should not be a complete surprise considering they are magic born. Sometimes I feel as if in the blink of an eye she will be married and next thing I know I’ll be a great great grandmother,” she harrumphed finding the idea an amusing picture on her mind.
"We're almost there. It's just down the hill. Have you ever rushed down so fast you kind of fly? I mean we do kind of fly already but I mean like higher up?" Dior's eye held a mischievous glint. "Race you to that tree?" She pointed to the large oak tree at the bottom of the path.
