The sounds of other passengers milling about and talking amongst themselves flooded Priya’s ears as she stood in the airport terminal with her family. This was always the worst part of the summer, the part that she always dreaded the most. She counted down to this day every year, wishing that time would move slower so that it wouldn’t come. But she was not the master of time, and she could not do anything about it. Time waits for no man, especially not a teenage girl.

Her mother was nearly hysterical as always. She dabbed at her eyes as he stepped back from Durai, but she smiled nonetheless. Durai, on the other hand, was a bit more composed. He had a few small tears in his eyes, sure, but he was so used to being away from home by now. He’d clearly gotten his strength from their father, who was also relatively calm. He wasn’t crying, but one could tell by the slightly defeated air in his posture that he was sad to see his first-born son leave. But this happened every year; Durai was enrolled at Oxford University in England, and he lived there most of the year.

“Oh, honey, we’ll send you all sorts of care packages, okay? And I’ll bake cookies for you, and we’ll all write you letters, and it’ll be fine, alright?” The way Kalyani was talking, she sounded more like she was comforting herself rather than Durai. “I know, Mum. I’ll be waiting, don’t worry!” He laughed lightheartedly and gave his mother a squeeze before letting her go. He’d never been a terribly touchy-feely kind of person, so this wasn’t much of a surprise.

Priya jumped slightly when the intercom announced that Durai’s plane had begun boarding, and Kalyani suddenly became frantic. The eldest son let out a startled grunt as the woman embraced him again, squeezing him tightly around the middle and littering his face with kisses that she had to stand on her toes to deliver. Once her turn was done, she stepped back to allow her husband a chance to say goodbye. Their exchange was certainly less emotion, a simple hug and a firm pat on the back.
“Love you, son.” Priya barely heard the muttered words, but knew that her father meant them; he never said anything he didn’t mean. Jaya was next, giving his brother a tight hug and a round of some secret handshake they’d made up when Priya was still very little. “See ya later, bro.”

Then came Priya’s turn. She and Durai had always been very close, the boy had always been fiercely protective of his baby sister. He’d even chased away the odd suitor or two in middle school! He pulled her into a tight hug and she buried her face in his shoulder. She could feel her eyes stinging and her throat tightening up now, the brick wall having been blown to bits. “Don’t leave me alone with Jaya, I won’t survive.” Her voice cracked a little as she spoke, trying to appear strong with a funny line instead of a farewell. It received a rumbling chuckle from Durai, and he sighed. “Just punch him if he bugs you, okay?” He was quiet for a bit before he leaned down to murmur in her ear. “Chin up, little bug. You'll be fine.”

That was when she lost it. Tears sprung forth and she shut her eyes tight in an attempt to keep them in, but they squeezed out anyway. Durai eventually pulled away and Kalyani scooped her daughter into her arms as he walked toward the terminal gate. He turned just before he headed down the hallway and waved, which was returned by the four family members standing on the other side of the velvet rope. As he disappeared from sight, Priya buried her face in her mother’s shoulder. Summer couldn’t come fast enough.

Now it was Priya’s turn to go back to school. She let out a heavy sigh as she went in through the main door of Teufel Town High School and was promptly bombarded by familiar but nonetheless annoying “WELCOME BACK” and “TEUFEL TOWN SPIRIT” signs. Teachers lined the hallways in front of their classrooms to guide lost students, but Priya knew her way by now. She did not, however, know her locker combination. After a few tries, and even a few tries with slightly varied numbers, she was forced to make her way to the student services center. Turns out someone had skipped a row on the sign-up sheet and she’d had the completely wrong combination. Perfect.

After she managed to get into her locker and deposit her extra notebooks and supplies, she made her way to her first class of the day: math. She’d gotten totally screwed when it came to forecasting for this year, and had been unable to shuffle her classes around much. But at least she wasn’t a Freshman; they always got the worst luck. She supposed math first thing in the morning would be alright, that is as long as she’d had a large latte first. She’d never been a morning person and likely never would be.

The majority of the day was uneventful and boring, teacher after teacher preaching about class expectations and syllabi, almost all of which requiring a parent signature. Priya knew most students just forged their parents’ signatures to save time, but her own parents always insisted on reading anything important she got from school. So, if she had forged their signatures, they would know. Oh well.

Her last class of the day was gym. This normally would have been an annoyance, because most teenagers are mentally done by the last period of the school day, but for Priya it was absolute torture. Not only did she not have much energy for physical activity, she physically could not participate in many activities. Some of them actually sounded fun when the teacher mentioned them, but even those filled her with a sense of disappointment. She would have to put very little effort into this class, no matter how hard she truly wished to succeed in it. Sure, the teacher had been made aware of her condition and would treat her accordingly, but that didn’t make her feel better in the slightest.

“Look, it’s Priya,” came a soft whisper. She barely heard it, but the sound of her own name heightened her hearing. She glanced around discreetly, catching sight of a particularly ‘plastic’-looking trio of girls all dyed from the same bottle. They were talking quietly among themselves, but she could feel them glance her way every so often. She let out a soft sigh, knowing their gossiping would only get worse. “The teacher gives her special treatment because she’s weak, but I bet she’s sleeping with him for extra credit.” The girls gasped and giggled quietly, all looking at her. She clenched her teeth behind slightly chapped lips as the teacher called the lot of them over toward the doors for the locker rooms. As Priya made her way toward the teacher, she made certain to almost body-check the ringleader of the gossipy little group. She turned and feigned a look of apology. “Oh, excuse me, I’m so sorry! My legs are feeling a bit weak today.” As she turned her back to them again, a smirk worked its way across her lips. A few kids who understood chuckled under their breath and Priya felt a little swell of pride. She would, under no circumstances, allow herself to be seen as weak in any shape or form.

However, this didn’t make her feel any better in the long run. She still would not be able to fully participate. As she drove home that day in her trusty silver truck, she resolved to take a little detour to the mall. She needed just a little bit of retail therapy to make herself feel better. A nice pair of boots or a fun shirt might do the trick, and so when she arrived at the mall she sent a quick text to her mother. She usually called her at work every day when she got home, and so the woman would most likely begin to worry if she didn’t. After that little chore was done, she set about going to her favorite shop. She needed something to make her look even tougher, something she could wear in gym class. She would rub her strength in those stupid girls’ faces.

Gasping.

Wheezing.

Panic.

Fear.

Berry eyes opened groggily, greeted with harsh white ceiling and fluorescent lighting. Retinas screaming in protest, Priya groaned and shut her eyes tight. She sluggishly lifted an arm to swipe at her face, feeling something strange against her skin, and found an oxygen mask covering her nose and mouth. She panicked for a moment, sitting up slightly, before a gentle touch on her thigh calmed her down. It was her mother, shushing her softly as the teenager laid back down.
“Shh, honey, it’s alright. You’re in the hospital,” she murmured, reaching up to brush some plum hair back from Priya’s forehead. This only prompted the teenager to frown, as she didn’t remember how she’d gotten here. She reached up and pulled the face mask down beneath her chin, breathing slowly.

“Wh…why? How did I get here?” She asked, shifting in the bed. Her legs felt heavy, arms full of sludge, and her head felt like it weighed fifty pounds. She shut her eyes again against the lights, leaning her head back on the pillows. Her mother soothingly rubbed her forehead and smiled softly. “You called us from the mall. You said you’d seen something, and you were scared, but you were wheezing so hard you couldn’t explain it. When we got there you were having a full-blown attack, and your inhaler wasn’t helping…” She sat back down, holding her daughter’s hand gently. “Do you remember what happened, Love?”

Priya lay there for a moment, searching her memory for anything that would have frightened her. She could remember going to the mall and buying things, and walking back out to her car, but after that…nothing. She swallowed thickly and opened her eyes again, shaking her head. “No, I can’t remember anything.” Kalyani smiled again, patting her arm reassuringly. “Don’t worry, dear. I’m sure it’ll come back soon.” She stood up and smoothed her hands over her dress before heading to the door. “I’ll go get you some potato salad, I know you like that.” She flounced out of the room, dark curls bouncing.

A sigh escaped the teenager in the hospital bed and she reclined back again, closing her eyes. She felt tired. She replaced the air mask and breathed as deeply as she comfortably could, trying to relax.

“I can make it so that you’re never sick again, you know.”

Priya jumped, eyes flying open and looking around the room. She was alone. Frowning, she rubbed at her forehead with a sigh; oxygen deprivation must be making her hear things. She relaxed again, sighing softly. But suddenly there was a light weight near her feet, and she opened her eyes again. There, sitting at the end of the bed, was a white creature that could have easily passed for a cat were it not for two long growths peeking out of its ears. She wasn’t sure what they were, or even what the whole thing was. She laughed to herself, sighing. “Wow, I must be really out of it...”

“No, I can assure you that I’m perfectly real, Priya.”

What? Priya sat up, her hair messy from lying in bed, and pulled her feet back away from the…thing. It was the only possible source of the voice she heard. But…but it couldn’t possibly talk! However, she was proven wrong when that voice sounded again, and she gasped. “Wh… How do you know my name?”

“I know everything about you, not just your name.” It seemed to be laughing at her without actually laughing out loud, the tone of its voice a bit teasing. Priya frowned, and didn’t reply mostly because she wasn’t sure what to say to that.

“I can make you better forever; you’ll never need that silly inhaler again!” The thing tilted its head to the side, further unnerving her with the fact that its mouth didn’t move in time with its words. Priya pulled her knees up to her chest, eyes widening. “All you have to do is make a contract with me, and you’ll be perfectly healthy forever!”

The teenager stared at the creature in silence. A contract? Was this some sort of legal thing? It didn’t seem like it; didn’t lawyers, human lawyers, usually handle those? “What kind of contract?”

“Why, a contract to become a magical girl, of course! In exchange, I will grant whatever wish you want. There are no rules.”

“Wh-what? A magical girl?” She asked, confused about the concept. “A contract..?” Priya raked a hand through her short hair, looking around the room again. “Yeah! You’ll help save the world and protect other people! Just make a contract with me so that I can grant your wish.” It said, and this prompted Priya to think for a moment. She was really sick of being ill all the time, constantly in danger of having an attack like the one she’d probably had in the mall parking lot. If what this thing said was true, it could grant any wish she wanted. If she wished to never be sick again, she wouldn’t ever have to deal with this stupid asthma again! She could be a normal girl like her friends, and not have to worry about being frightened or overexerting herself and having another attack.

She looked at the creature at the foot of the bed, and hesitated. She thought, briefly, that maybe this was just a dream she was having from her brain still being low on oxygen. But if that were the case, then she had nothing to lose, right? She shut her eyes, fisting her hands in the blankets of the hospital bed. If this really was just a hallucination or a dream, what was the harm in following through? Her voice cracked a bit with desperation as she looked at the strange creature.

“I wish I didn’t have this stupid asthma! I wish to never be sick again, ever!”
