Thanatos stared down at the tipsy mercenary.

"So far I find you to be the closest to what I was looking for. I can tell by the way you carry yourself, that you conduct business in a very professional manner. You feel emotions, but you don't show others, or allow them to govern you. Instead you act on logic and reason. This will be beneficial to the team and to your paycheck. I will not pry into your personal life but you definitely had a rough life. You're too well trained, to comfortable with this life style, and to withdrawn from everyone to have had an easy life."

Thanatos paused to sip his tea. With each sip he slowly felt is buzz fade and his thoughts became clear and focused. The tension and struggles of the day melted into the night.

"When I was ten years old I killed my first man. I was out hunting with my father and he shot my father and then me. As he approached my father to finish him off I jumped onto his back and stabbed him in the neck with my hunting knife until i had more of his blood on me then he had left in his body. From that point on I realized that is what I was best at. However I have never taken pleasure in ending the life of anyone. Every person I kill makes me feel less like the hero and more like the vermin I exterminate."

Thanatos took another break in his speech to drink in some more of his tea before continuing

"Every time I help someone, or bring vermin like Victor and his regime closer to annihilation, I feel as though I have made a difference; that my life has purpose and meaning. To me, making a living helping people and being paid to do it is a win-win. That is why I do what I do."

Thanatos sipped some more of his tea before resume the conversation.

"Don't get me wrong when the occasion calls for it I'll rip someone on half with my bare hands if I must. As you witnessed I have no qualms with the use of torture to extract the intel I require to move forward with my operations. I prefer the non-violent route but usually my impatient and pragmatic side beat out my humanitarian side. It would be nice to not have to carry a cannon with you where ever you went."

Thanatos finished with a slight chuckle as he felt the weight of his massive revolver shift. He finished with his cup of tea before pouring another. He wanted to give Sunshine her chance to talk, now that she had time to take in what he had said.

As Sunshine listened to Thanatos’s story, she couldn’t help wonder why he was opening up to her like this. He didn’t really seem like the type to do so in the first place; to her, he came off more as someone who doesn’t think back on his past too often, and just lived in the now. She wondered if his tongue had just loosed itself because he was still a tad tipsy himself.

Thanatos’s speech continued, and when he mentioned killers being vermin, Sunshine felt her blood boil. Her grey eyes turned dark, dangerous, and fiery as she glared at the man. He had no right to judge anyone on what they did to survive. Clenching her fist, Sunshine watched it shaking before her and counted backwards from ten. It was an old and overused trick, but it never failed to help calm her so that she could retain her emotionless exterior.

Standing up from her chair, Sunshine grabbed her abandoned carton of cigarettes and stared down at Thanatos with her usual dead look. She blinked once, before stating in monotone, "Be careful of who you call vermin. Vermin like me have reasons as to why we are the way we are.” Adjusting the Exploding Death on her back, she continued, “Let me tell you somethin’ ‘bout me oh righteous leader. I’m this way ‘cause I was raised this way. I grew up in a kill or be killed environment, so being like this,” Sunshine motioned to herself, “Comes with the territory.”

TThanatos listened to the small girl in front of him explode. He relaxed in his chair a bit, knowing that his relaxed attitude would help fuel the rage engulfing Sunshine. Once she paused in her rant Thanatos raised his tea to his mouth and took a long sip.

He felt it was down his throat and warm his body. He slowly breathed out and began to speak. “Sunshine- you’re just too emotional about this. A little comment like that and you explode. Pretty much all you’ve done is sit there and be pissed off since I met you. When I said vermin I was referring to the people that prey on the weak and favor destruction and themselves over creation and community.

The only way humanity as a whole is gonna survive, is if we as a species work together. It was our inability to ‘make nice’ with our fellow man that got us here in the first place. I as an individual cannot save the world. I need people to help me. I knew when I sent out all these letters some would refuse, some would be useful, and some would be more trouble than they’re worth.

The way I see it; you can work for me and make an honest living and be part of something bigger than yourself or you can walk away from this right now. Be warned though- I will not hesitate to kill anyone that is a threat to the safety of this town. Yes I am a reluctant killer; but still a killer. Honestly the only reason you weren’t on the business end of my Midnight Express, back when you were working for the enemy, is because of your loyalty to your employers and I was hoping deep down under all that burning hatred and contempt there is a human being. So what’s it gonna be? Will you work for me or try to find a job elsewhere?”

Sunshine

Sunshine sighed as Thanatos finished speaking, she hadn’t meant to risk her job. She was in dire need of the money, and it had been a long time that she had a place to sleep that wasn’t dirt. Pulling out a cigarette and lighting it, Sunshine took a small drag. She needed to calm her nerves; she wasn’t usually this reactive. It was something about this man, however, that set her on edge.

Taking a longer drag, Sunshine let out a puff of smoke that she made sure to aim away from the man. She wasn’t sure if it would anger him more, and she wanted to avoid any more unnecessary issues. With one more sigh—this one less agrrivated and more relaxed—Sunshine spoke in her usual monotone, “I never said that I was gonna quit. I’m just saying, I’ve worked for some pretty shady people, but like ya’ said, I’m loyal to my employer. You don’t need to worry ‘bout me tryin’ to stab ya’ in ya’ sleep. I’ve got standards an morals and s**t of that nature.”

Taking another drag from her cigarette—finishing it off and putting out the butt with the ice in her empty rum cup—Sunshine gave Thanatos a serious look before stating, “However, if that girl thinks that she can threaten me without consequence a second time she is sorely mistaken.”

Smoke had billowed from her lips as she spoke, emphasizing the menace behind her words. Sunshine continued, her accent disappearing with every word, “Ya don’t have to worry about me attacking her either, I won’t do anything unless she instigates it.”

With a blank face Sunshine waved goodnight to Thanatos and walked up to the rooms. After glancing around, she found the door with the number that matched her key. Unlocking the door and stepping inside, Sunshine instantly took notice to the chair at the desk. As the door shut behind her, she grabbed the chair and propped it up under the handle to help prevent any unwelcome guests. Pulling her belt off—and along with it her katana—Sunshine placed the weapon delicately atop of the desk, her gun following it.

Sunshine pulled off her Exploding Death and pulled out a small rag. She wiped the dust off of the weapon and then placed it on the ground by her bed delicately and within easy reach. It was her favorite weapon, seeing as it was her first possession she had gotten her hands on when she escaped the testing facility and Sir.

Sunshine then lay down on the bed, and nestled under the covers. The sheets were unusually soft, and the mercenary found herself relishing in the fact. Although usually a fitful sleeper, Sunshine quickly drifted off into sleep; a small smile on her face as she slumbered, this was peace.

Actual RPing:

Upon arriving at the Motel Thanatos quietly walked by the new recruits rooms. He slid a note under each of their doors with mission details. He then headed up the stairs to his room.

The room had a large sliding steel door that opened via pneumatics from the right side. Thanatos reached into his pocket and pull out his key. He slid it into the key hole on the wall and turned it a quarter turn to the right. Once the key was in place the sound of a contactor clicking into place and the pneumatics activating could be heard. The door then slid open and Thanatos stepped in. Despite being mechanical the entire mechanism operated smooth and was remarkably quiet. Thanatos had the door installed a few years ago by some of Ol’ Pete’s assistants, after too many failed attempted to kill Thanatos in his sleep.

Thanatos room was sizable and well furnished. He had a writing bench in the corner, a wooden table with a few chairs, and a large bed with mattress, box spring, and metal bed post. The wooden floor had a large black throw rug on the floor that covered most of the floor. Thanatos hung his jacket up put his gun and sword in a chest that contained his weapon maintenance tools and ammunition. He took of his coat and hung it on a coat rack in the back corner and tossed his dirty clothes down a laundry chute. He walked into his bathroom and washed the dirt off his face. On one side of the room there is a sink, toilet, and tub. To the opposite side has a towel rack and walk-in closet. Thanatos laid out his clothes for tomorrow and then laid down his bed to get a few hours sleep.....

....After a few hours of dreamless sleep he woke and check a mechanical clock on his writing desk. The clock was dead on 6 a.m.

"Time to get up" Thanatos muttered to himself as he rolled out of bed. Standing up and stretching he made his way to the bathroom to fill his tub. He let it fill while he sat down and wrote some more notes. Once the tub was full he removed his undergarments revealing his scared body. A large scar traveled down his back from shoulder blade to his hip. A few healed bullet wounds were dotted about his chest and shoulders. The large giant had slight muscular build to him from years of training and fighting. Thanatos took his time and soaked his sore joints in his tub before washing his hair and drying off.

Thanatos slid into his clean clothes and after grabbing his weapons and a few other essentials headed to the bank.

Six bolted straight up, gasping and covered in a cold sweat. The early morning light could be seen coming in through the window, creating a peaceful contrast to the horrors his own mind had conjured in his sleep. He took several calming breaths before getting out of bed and going to wash up to start the day, forcing the lingering memory from his mind. He couldn't dwell on it, he and the others had to get ready to move against the bandits. Still, he was only partially successful.

Once he was washed he put on his clothes, he'd need to find some way to get new ones so he had more than just the one set, and collected his weapons and ammo. Moving for the door, he noticed a piece of paper lying on the floor which he promptly picked up. "The West Ridge huh? Alright then, better ask Al if he has any food or water to spare."

After tearing up the note and throwing it away, Six left his room, locked the door behind him, and headed downstairs. Once he got there he made straight for Al. "You don't by any chance have food and water you can spare for the day?" Al just smiled and said "Thanatos?" At Six's nod he walked to the back and came back a minute or two later with a small pack and two canteens. "I have enough for the girls as well. I'll be sure to set them up when they come down." "Thank you." Six said, before taking the food and water and heading to the stables.

Sunshine awoke from a dreamless sleep, feeling refreshed and in a rather tolerable mood. Despite that, it did not show on her face. Walking into her bathroom, she started her shower, stepping in and reveling in the cold water hitting her and washing off all the grime from her skin. She preferred cold showers to warm, the steam from a warm shower made her sleepy and dizzy. After scrubbing herself clean she stepped out, and dried herself off. After putting her clothes back on, she wrapped her towel around her head—to aid in drying her hair—and found a toothbrush and toothpaste and began brushing her teeth. She then walked back into the bedroom section of the room, the brush still in her mouth.

Glancing around, Sunshine noticed a note under the chair that was blocking the door. Bending down she picked it up, pausing in brushing her teeth to read it. She nodded to herself, taking in the information and then tossing the note on her desk. Spitting in the sink, and rinsing her toothbrush, Sunshine walked back to her room…

‘Wait, did I just call this my room?’ Sunshine thought to herself, incredibly surprised with herself. But it was true, she felt as though it were already hers.

Shaking her head she continued to walk into the room and strapped her weapons on. Grabbing the note and her lighter and cigarettes, Sunshine placed all three into one of the pockets of her trench-coat and moved the chair from in front of the door.

Walking down the stairs and to the bar, Sunshine didn’t get the chance to speak before Al handed her a large jug of water and some bread. Sunshine smirked at him, nodding her thanks and walked away with the items.

Tabitha Cardell

Tabitha was up at 5 a.m., though she wasn't in any particular hurry. It was habit more than anything else, one that started back when she used to wake up early to see her dad off to work. Then to help him at work. Then to carry on her own work in his absence. "Get the most out of each day," he used to say. For Tabitha, that often meant not getting much sleep, but it was a small price to pay for the amount of work that could get done. For instance, on this morning, Tabitha spent her time carefully cleaning and examining her Kirin sniper rifle and Kraken repeater pistol. She had cleaned herself the night before; her guns were in just as much need of attention, if not more. The previous night's tears were not forgotten, but now that she'd had a chance to shed them, she was determined to move on. Cleaning her guns gave her something on which to focus her thoughts and energy.

This task kept her occupied for a while, until stiff muscles required stretching. Putting down the ringed combat knife she'd been polishing, Tabitha stood and stretched before pacing the room a few times, looking it over once more. Since she had decided to stay, she ought to get used to the place. The comfortable mattress she was already acquainted with, but now she had time to examine the patterns on the comforter, the styling of the lamps, the designs on the rug, the letter under the door-

Spotting the folded paper, Tabitha moved briskly to the door and stooped to pick it up. Reading Thanatos' latest instructions quickly, she glanced at the clock: 7:30 a.m. Perhaps she'd gotten a little more lost in thought than she'd expected. There was still plenty of time to get things together, but not enough time to get lost in thought again. It would be better to get there a little early; she didn't want to be the one responsible for holding up the mission, and more than that, she wanted to show Thanatos that her head was in the game. She would be on her best behavior from now on. No more picking fights with squad members.

Quickly brushing and braiding her long hair, Tabitha donned the rest of her clothing and made sure her weapons were comfortably situated before grabbing her father's jacket and heading out the door. The lock clicked behind her, and she tucked the key and Thanatos' note into one of her many pockets as she headed for Al's bar. The man seemed to have been waiting for her: a small pack of food and two canteens full of water were placed on the bar as she approached. With a nod of thanks to the barkeep, she took the offered sustenance and headed out the door in the direction of the stables.

Current Mission: All War is Based on Deception

Kayla awoke with a start, clenching her side arm under her pillow from a flame filled dream as the sun greeted her from the window in her hotel room. She dreamt the same horrifying dream every night, awaking in a cold sweat each time. She tried to shake off the images that were now sketched into her brain. Moving to the bathroom to clean up she noticed a note tucked under the door. The note told her to meet Thanatos and the other crew members at the West Ridge at nine a.m. She glanced at the clock to see she had about 2 hours to get to the West Ridge.

She took a long shower, allowing the warm water to run down her back to wash away the memories of her dream. “You are with a new crew, you need to put your game face on. We are starting our first mission today. You can’t show any weakness.” She got out of the shower, and prepared for whatever the mission might entail. Cleaning her weapons always calmed her mind, so although they didn’t really need it, she found her hands going through the motions before she could consciously decide to do it. Having lost track of time, she glanced up at the clock to see that it was already eight.

She made her way for the door, carting all of her weapons in their proper holsters. Locking the door behind her, she placed the key in one of her numerous pant pockets. Walking down the stairs she saw that Al put a pack, of what she could only guess was food, on the counter nearest her. She grabbed it in, and thanked Al for the room and the pack.

With the daylight guiding Kayla, she quickly found her way back to the stables.
