A dim light illuminated a table in the corner of the crowded bar. Thanatos was leaning back in his wooden chair with his feet on the table. In his hands was a deck of poker cards he was Pharaoh Shuffling. On the table in front of him was a bottle of whiskey and an empty shot glass.

Thanatos was patiently awaiting the arrival of his new recruits he sent letters to and passing the time by playing poker with the patrons of Al's bar. Thanatos leaned forward and placed his cards down on the table whilst pouring himself a glass of whiskey and downing a shot. He shuddered for a moment as the liquid touched his tongue.

"Good s**t. Huh?" Al hollered a Thanatos when he caught him shuddering.

"Fiery. As always." Thanatos replied half coughing.

Suddenly the door to the bar opened and through it came what Thanatos had been waiting on.

Six walked into the bar and looked around. There were several patrons sitting around the bar, including several off to the side who were playing cards. One of those doing so was a foreboding giant in a hat and jacket. Going over to the counter he addressed the barkeep and said "I'm looking for a man named Thanatos. Do you know where I can find him?"

"See that giant over there with the cards?" the barkeep said nodding in his direction "That'd be him." Turning toward the man with the cards Six thought to himself "Of course it is." before heading over to the man that had left him the letter.

Thanatos saw the one of the potential recruits he was waiting for enter the bar. Thanatos recognized him immediately once he saw the metal hand. He was the young man from the Gamma Lab. The man proceeded to ask Al for Thanatos, who guided the man to him. As the man approached, Thanatos removed his legs from the table and sat in a more professional manner.

“Here take a seat” Thanatos offered as he gestured to one of the empty wooden chairs at his table.

“I am expecting more so rather than repeat myself I’d like to wait until some more people arrive. I would ask you to tell me about yourself but I know your memories were erased. If you read that file by the desk in the room where you were behind held, then you know all that I know about you. And I know you didn’t have a name. So what should I call you?” Thanatos asked as he poured another shot and downed it making sure not to let it touch his tongue this time.

Suspicion and curiosity battled it out in Tabitha's mind as she hesitated in the entryway of motel's bar. It was crowded with patrons of all shapes and sizes: some sat at the bar itself, some sat at the various tables, some were playing cards, and some were playing pool. Most of the men seemed tough and well-built, and Tabitha's gloved fingers twitched as she thought of the CR-Kraken holstered on her hip. If it came down to it, she wanted to know that she could pull that baby out at a moment's notice.

However, a second, more careful glance around the place proved that such an act would not be necessary. These people looked tough, but in the sense that they were just honest folk trying to survive and scratch out a living in this quiet little town. Weary shoulders sagged after a long day of work, and more than one patron was nodding off. Tabitha relaxed a little.

"Excuse me?" The soft enquiry was directed towards the barkeep, who she'd noticed had been keeping a detached eye on her ever since she'd walked through the doors.

"What can I do for ya?" the man behind the counter asked good-naturedly, although Tabitha got the sense that he already knew what she was about to ask, just as Melisa had known back at the stables.

"Where can I find a man named Thanatos?" For a moment, Tabitha began to panic as she realized how she must look. With dirt caking her from head to foot, dried blood on her face and a cloth bandage on her head, she must look quite the fright. The bags under her eyes would tell everyone that she was exhausted and hadn't gotten a decent night's sleep in a while, not counting the enforced sleep of being unconscious. Her Roaring Kirin sniper rifle was hanging by its strap from her shoulder, and her CR-Kraken repeater pistol was plenty visible on her belt. Could the barkeep kick her out for that? Her hands were nowhere near either firearm at the moment, and now more than ever, she didn't want to look like any kind of threat.

The barkeep didn't seem to care about her appearance though, and he just nodded towards one of the tables. "See that giant over there with the cards? By the young man with the metal hand and the black scarf?" Tabitha looked over at the two men before nodding and murmuring a soft thanks. Taking a deep breath, she began to make her way towards Thanatos' table, her eyes narrowing as she sized the two figures up. Yes, Thanatos looked like the kind of person who could easily bash a man's brains out against the bars of a cell. This made Thanatos a dangerous man... but at the same time, who else could've washed the wound on her head and bandaged it for her while she was still unconscious? And he had to have left the note. Unsure as to where that left her, Tabitha just took another deep breath and continued. She supposed that she at least owed this man the chance to explain himself, if not her life.

"Thanatos, I presume?" she asked evenly once she reached the table, her face carefully bare of any particular expression.

As Sunshine walked into the bar, she was assaulted by the noise of rowdy barflies and drunken idiots. Glancing around, she saw most men sitting around drinking—or in one case unconscious at his table—and rolled her eyes in disgust. However one table in the back stood out as it housed a cloaked giant, a much shorter man with a metal hand, and a woman with a large rifle attached to her back. Looking over the motley crew once more, she shook her head and headed over to the bar. Shouldering past two barflies that were in her way she asked the barkeep emotionlessly, “Is Thanatos here?”

The barkeep only smirked as he poured alcohol for his customers. Almost sensing that Sunshine didn’t like idle chit-chat he merely pointed at the mix-matched group and continued his job.

Shifting the RXT Exploding Death on her back, so that it didn’t cut any of the people at the tables she walked by, Sunshine thought to herself, ‘So I am not the only one then? Good.’

Walking over to the table and looking to the large man she assumed, “You are Thanatos, then?”

Six took the offered saet and was about to tell Thanatos the name he had chosen for himself, though not the reason for it, a woman with a rifle on her back came over to the table and asked for Thanatos. Before either he or Thanatos could say anything another woman, this one with a scythe, came and asked the same question. "To answer both of your questions he," Six said, nodding toward Thanatos, "is Thanatos. To answer your question, you can call me Six."

Deciding to let Thanatos have the floor, considering they were all there to meet with him anyway, Six sat back in his chair and waited.

Thanatos saw two of his other recruits arrive almost back to back. Both young females; one of them the girl he rescued from Sanctuary.

“Ladies please take a seat so I may discuss the reasons I summoned you here. But first here I am a man of my word and hears the money I promised.” Thanatos handed each of them some gold coins.

“Hey Al free drinks for the three over here” Thanatos said to all and gestured to the three potential recruits in front of him.

“Ok I’ll make this simple. At this point you can stay or leave. If you choose to stay here’s what I have to say. I want to put an end to Victor and his bandit’s reign of terror. The same ones that killed your friends and family, the same ones that took your mind away. So now I extend my offer to you. If you join me I’ll help you get back at those who take what isn’t theirs. Here, read this and let me know what you think”

Thanatos said as he handed them each a piece of paper. The paper had a rank and pay system written on it along with mentions of free services from the town of New Jericho courtesy of Mayor Kevin White in exchange for services renders. He leaned back and took another shot of whiskey and waited for their response.

Six gave the paper a cursory glance, not paying much attention to what it said in detail. Though he did notice the reason Melisa had told him not to bother paying was because he wouldn't have to if he accepted Thanatos's offer. "I don't really care about the perks. If working with you will help me get back at the monsters who did this to me then I'll gladly accept your offer Thanatos."

At this point Al had brought their drinks and Six took his own with a nod of gratitude. Taking a sip he waited to see what the others would say.

Tabitha Cardell

Tabitha turned at the sound of another voice, a female voice this time, and took in the sight of a young woman with raven black hair and a scythe on her back. Another warrior that Thanatos had recruited? Some part of Tabitha felt better for knowing that she hadn't been the only one summoned here, but another part of her still suspiciously wondered why.

Choosing to remain silent for now, Tabitha briefly shifted her attention to the man called Six as he answered in regards to whether or not the giant was indeed Thanatos. Not that they'd asked Six... but he was likely just as curious about all of this as she was and just wanted to get this little meeting started. At least everyone else was just as confused as Tabitha herself felt. As she took a seat at Thanatos' request, she continued to study Six. The Gauntlet that was his left hand certainly spoke volumes, although there was a curiously almost-blank look to his eyes. It wasn't something that suggested anything wrong with him; it just made him look like a blank slate. Very strange.

"Oh... Tabitha could not recall there being any mention of money promised, and thus was surprised when Thanatos handed them each some gold coins. "Thank you, sir. Even more confused now as to why they were all here, Tabitha's eyes locked on the giant's face, trying unsuccessfully to read his soul through those red sun goggles of his. After hesitating a moment, she slipped the coins in her pocket while Thanatos surprised her again and ordered them all free drinks. "I, uh... thank you again, sir, but this really isn't necessary-" she began to protest, but Thanatos cut her off to get down to the business at hand.

Victor. This was about getting rid of that villain and his hordes of followers. Tabitha visibly tensed when Thanatos mentioned that they would be helping to put an end to the men that had killed their friends and family. Her friend. Her father. How had he known? Or could he just guess enough to know that this statement would have some effect on all of them? Then again, he had to have seen her get captured to know where to find her in the first place, and if he'd seen that, then he'd certainly seen when Orion had been gunned down.

As Thanatos handed out a piece of paper to each of them that better detailed the conditions and perks of the jobs, Tabitha removed her hands from the table and began to wring them fretfully in her lap. Leaning forward a bit to make it look like she was reading, she let her unruly bangs cover her eyes while her mind silently reeled. Honestly, she hadn't thought about the loss of her friend since the moment it happened. There had been too many other pressing things on her mind: figuring out where she was, escaping without getting caught, finding Dawn, finding this Thanatos... Now that she had come to a bit of a rest stop on the road of life however, the terrible sight was replaying itself over and over again in her mind's eye. No. Not yet. I can't grieve yet. I have to decide.

Blinking furiously to force back the tears that had threatened to form, Tabitha read over the paper for real. It sounded reasonable enough. They'd be working for the mayor, and as Thanatos had said, it would give her a chance to get back at those who had taken what wasn't theirs... Six seemed to feel the same way on that point, at least.

"I'm in." Keeping her voice even, Tabitha looked back up at Thanatos as Al placed her drink down in front of her and the other two. If he had seen Orion's death and what reaction she had managed to convey before getting knocked out, then he knew why she was doing this. She didn't have to say it.

Decision made, she glanced down at the drink she had been given. Not one for drinking any amount of alcohol, she could've done without it, but not wanting to appear rude after everything Thanatos had done and promised, she took a very small sip before putting the nearly untouched glass down. She wouldn't touch it again while she sat at the table. With only the other young woman's answer remaining, Tabitha gave the scythe-girl a sidelong glance.

Sunshine

At Thanatos’s request for both ladies to take a seat, Sunshine took her chair and flipped it around, leaning against the front with an informal posture. Her feet were rested on the bottom rung of the chair and she pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from her cloak pockets. Holding the box out, Sunshine didn’t speak, but the nonverbal offer was still there.

Leaving the box on the table should any of them change their minds, Sunshine light her own and enjoyed the chemical relaxant. She wasn’t a big smoker, but they helped calm the nerves after a long day; which is why she seldom bought them and was more than willing to lend one out.

Upon receiving her gold coins, Sunshine pocketed them quickly. When Thanatos ordered liquor for them, Sunshine let a tiny smirk show on her face. She prayed for rum, the only alcohol she would touch, for all others had a foul odor that she could not overcome enough to drink. When the barkeep approached, she found that her prayers were answered.

Picking up the glass of golden rum on the rocks Sunshine took a large sip, practically a gulp and plopped the glass back down. Holding the cigarette away from her face, she questioned Thanatos, smoke leaving her lips with each word, “I understand your reasoning for recruiting them; they have reason, but why call on me?”

After her remark, Sunshine then thought about it. If this man and his troop did those things to the man and woman sitting at the table with her, who was to say that children weren’t involved in his cruelty as well. This thought steeled her, causing her eyes to become hard and determined as she spoke deadpan as always, “I still want my answer, but I’m in.”

She thought of the man that had housed her as a child, the one that she later dissected and relished in his suffering for as long as she could keep him alive. Sunshine remembered him begging her to kill him, and how she merely told him what he had told all the children that he had failed experiments on, ‘Die on your own, you disgrace.’

Sunshine let out a growl as she broke her cigarette in her fury of her memories. Dipping the still lit end briefly into her liquor she put it out before she made a mess. Her memories were ones that she sometimes wished she could forget, but knew at the same time that they made her who she was today.

Glancing over at the other woman, Sunshine noticed that she was looking in her direction as well. Sunshine then looked at her barely touched liquor and thought to herself with a concealed snort, ‘Pansy.’

(O.O.C. : Since none of you mentioned what kind of liquor it was, I took it upon myself to pick something. biggrin Oh and you all know I don't smoke, so throughout this I will probably be fudging shtuff up about that.)

“Well you see Sunshine I know you're a mercenary and I figured you'd appreciate the opportunity to make some good coin and have a roof over your head every night. They were not dangerously close, but enough so to have originated within the town

“Hold that thought and follow me.” Thanatos said as he made a beeline to the door at a mild jogging pace. Upon exiting the building he saw that three of the town’s defense towers were on fire. The mighty battle tanks that sat on top of them were now a heap of twisted metal.

Thanatos noticed something up on the west ridge that overlooked the town. He used his telescopic eye to get a closer look. Upon closer inspection he saw a small group of bandits tossing empty rocket launchers to the ground and escaping on foot.

“Ok time to show me what you’re made off. Up on that ridge there are a group of bandits responsible for this mess. Hunt them down and kill them. Leave one alive enough to talk and bring him back here. I need to run and talk with the Mayor. A sum of $100 will be transferred to each of your accounts upon return.” Thanatos said as he pulled out his revolver and jumped on Hypnos who was tethered a post out front.

As Thanatos began answering Sunshine's question, a rumble could be heard in the distance and Thanatos quickly ran outside, followed by the others. Once outside they all saw that three of the town's defense towers had been damaged. Thanatos pointed them to a ridge near the town and gave them their first real mission. Six nodded his head and ran to the stables, fully expecting the two woman to be right behind him. Once he arrived he rushed to Diablo's stall, noticing the two horses nearby that hadn't been there before. "They must belong to Sunshine and the other woman." he thought to himself as he opened the stall and led Diablo out. The meeting with Thanatos had been interrupted before they could learn the second woman's name, he'd have to ask her once they were at the ridge. It wouldn't do to call her "sniper girl."

Once outside he mounted the horse and rushed off to the ridge, unholstering his Titan on the way.

Tabitha Cardell

After the other woman's eyes met Tabitha's for a brief moment, Tabitha turned her eyes back to Thanatos. No need to stare, but she continued to watch the other woman out of the corner of her eye as Thanatos answered the woman's - Sunshine's - questions. Sunshine? With her personality? Seems anything but. And she was a mercenary, no less. Well, now things made a little more sense, though Tabitha had never doubted Sunshine's right to be called a 'warrior' with the hardened air she presented.

Any further thought on the subject of her future team members was interrupted by the muffled sounds of explosions, and they seemed fairly close. Tensing, Tabitha was on her feet in an instant and following Thanatos and the others out the door. The fact that three of the town's defense towers were on fire was certainly a cause for commotion, and Tabitha's eyes narrowed as she took in the sight of the twisted metal that had been the tanks on top. Whoever had done this knew what they were doing. This wasn't just some random attack, and in all likelihood, it wouldn't be the last.

Rightly so, Thanatos wanted the ones responsible for this mess to be taken care of, and he was sending his three new recruits to do it. Following Six's lead, Tabitha ran straight for the stables without giving an audible confirmation that she accepted this new task. Seeing Six with the beautiful black stallion from earlier brought a small smile to Tabitha's face. Ah, so it's his. Should've figured. Black, black, and more black. That meant that the silvery-gray stallion, which had not been there before, was likely Sunshine's. Another beautiful creature. Alas there was no time to admire him now though.

In no time at all, Tabitha had opened Dawn's stall and was leading the mare out of the stables. The explosions and fire didn't faze the cyber-horse, but Tabitha could tell that Dawn knew something was wrong and was ready for action. Good. Once outside, she mounted her horse and hurried after Six. Dawn was only too happy to oblige, even considering the long ride they'd had only just earlier that day. As soon as Sunshine had joined them, Tabitha spoke out. "They've gotta know that someone will be after them for this. If they're smart, they'll have something planned for pursuers." The fact that a plan was needed was implied. This... squad... would also need a leader, and Tabitha knew that she wouldn't be it.
