Well to tell you the true I've had to actully simulate what to say to a person that doesn't think much of world issues for my Envp155 class so we've been hit with all of this. My parents don't exactly care about the environment either but they don't hate it or think its stupid! The best advice I can give you is that your opinion and your thoughts count because you are your own spirit! Everyone deserves an opinion and deserves to have a say in anything that has to do with our earth, so I say that if she doesn't care then let her not care, it doesn't hurt you as a person.

Hmm.... Welp you can try to let her know that it raises her electric bill, she could save money, plus it's helping save energy all together! If that doesn't work then maybe I can think of something else.

Not everyone can be an activist, and not everyone is going to care, sadly enough. I've run into that a lot at my school, with people who know about the problems with the environment, with social injustice, and just... don't care. They're more concerned with when the next time they're going to get smashed will be than with saving the earth.
But that's another story and another rant.

What I have found to be effective when trying to convince someone who doesn't particularly care about the environment to be more environmentally friendly, is to relate it to something that they do care about. Turn off the lights when you leave the room to reduce electricity bills. Take shorter showers to reduce water bills. Use reusable dishes and you won't have to take the garbage out as often.

As sad as it is, people in general tend to be more motivated by money than by good causes.

Yup. Tell her about the benefits of being environmentally conscious.

Also, you could try tking a break from it, and then if she asks you about your classes talk about what your learning in Earth Science, i.e. how all living things depend on the Earth and ecosystems (if you can't breathe, can't have clean water, and are dying from pollution----well, you're just screwed. And plenty of humans are heading tha way). Also, poor communities, especially communities of color, are often affected more by environmental problems, i.e. they're located around factories dumps and etc., they are shunted off to the side on clean-up, have bad water, etc. You could try finding out about people who have to deal with that, and also people in thrid-world countries who are getting the butt-end of environmental destruction.

There are people who don't care, they are blind, and they only open their eyes when they get affected, that is the humanity mind falling to a future that is going to destroy all of us.

There should be more music groups like System of a Down, they sang about the enviroment and politic, and also they say:

We don't have to cut forests to make paper anymore. That's why System Of A Down printed this CD booklet(printed with soy inks)on Vanguard Recycled Plus processc chlorine-free paper, made from 10% tree free fibers and flax and 90% post-consumer waste from www.livingtreepaper.com

There are many bands out there that are conscious about whats going on in our world; Incubus-big on global warming, System of a down- understands the environment, Tool-conscious about society and what the human race is doing, A Perfect Circle- same as tool but in a more organic fashion. I recommend these bands to anyone that wants to hear the other side to whats going on in the world instead of bands that sing about going out and partying, along with singing about sex. Some bands are too blinded by their own greed to make a song about actual world issues!

Ooh, awesome environmentally/socially etc. conscious bands? My favorite! Besides the aforementioned bands, all of which I am absolutely in love with, there's also Bikini Kill (Riot Grrl!), Antiproduct (and awesome crust band, their lyrics are seriously ******** awesome), Adhamh Roland (an awesome trans guy whom I've met before http://www.riotfolk.revolt.org/member.php?id=5), Rage Against the Machine, and a hip-hop band with a mazing lyrics that I just recently discovered, Immortal Technique. I also like a lot of Garbage's lyrics, and Loreena Mckennitt has very nature-spiritual lyrics (I don't have any eclectical music tastes, no, never...). A lot of bands also aren't mainly political, but definetely put a stand out there, in some or many of their songs.. I just started listening to Otep, and their song "Menocide" hits it hard. Another one of said bands is Disturbed, with their political/social commentary in Believe, growing even stronger in Ten Thousand Fists, an album which was a call for their fans to unite together and stand up. Really, if you guys haven't listened to some of these bands....check them out! ^O^

I also listen to many bands which don't have such lyrics, but find their music has meaning to me. Like Korn, who is to busy dreaming about sex to make political lyrics (ok...perhaps that one was bad...)

Yeah there is a lot of good stuff out there! You know riku, maybe giving your mom some music that explains things, it might work......But anyways many great bands that just explain human interaction with nature and other humans! Good stuff!

Okay, so the thing is, my mom...just doesn't care for the environment. Don't get me wrong, she doesn't hate it or purposely litter or anything like that...she just doesn't particularly care. It's not entirely her fault - she was brought up poor and though well educated, focused only on getting good grades and thus a good job. So I've tried talking to her about it...And she knows it means a lot to me. But I guess she's just tired of hearing me rant off about it now...So she either drones me out or kinda...in a way, mocks me whenever I try to talk to her about it. She just laughs it off. So now I'm scared to keep trying to tell her to at least turn off her lights when she'll leave her room empty...And I've been scared of her in the first place anyways too. (Heh....my mommy ish scary...>_<) Moreover, my earth science teacher was talking to us about how we shouldn't go bug our parents about being more environmentally conscious...He was saying stuff like, "Don't go bug your parents about it and tell them to do this and this and this to save the environment, you do that. You do something about it. Your parents have already heard enough about the overwhelmingly lethal state the Earth is in now." But the thing is, I do do stuff to save the environment. Every day I do. And my mom doesn't know about the state of the Earth. She never reads up on it, watches it on TV...etc.

So...what do I do to convince her to care about the Earth more?

Money. Money is an incentive for adults. Tell her that if not for the sake of the environment, then for her own sake on the energy bill, do stuff like get a timer for the hot water heater, turn the heater down, turn off lights, etc...

You should explain to your mother that while she may not care , that you are the one who will be living in the future. Explain that she can either help your future be healthy and beautiful, or that she can help create a dirty world full of sickness and pollution for you to live in.

I know exactly how it feels--my parents are not terribly receptive at times either. My mom was raised by her grandmother, and sort of has a Depression-era mind set: money is what matters. Anything that is slightly more expensive is frivolous. I know that many people who grew up poor have the opposite reaction of my mother, and want to show off their wealth when they become successful, so it kind of depends on what you're going for. But I agree with ghstphantom3 that money is often the key.

What you have to do is relate it to her own experience. Show her that being wasteful is BAD, not just for fuzzy animals in the rainforest, but for you, herself, everybody. I know a lot of my friends will tune out if I rant about CO2 emissions or whatevs, but if I talk about how global warming will affect OUR town, the snowboarding in this place, things that matter to them, it makes an impression.

Don't give up! My family has slowly gotten greener with my constant pressure. Though now my dad calls me the "eco-cop" . . . xd

lol we are all eco-cops. cool We just moved into a really nice house, but there's a light like every two feet of it, so our electricity bill has basically skyrocketed. So that's REALLY helping. xd

Hmm...I seem to have the same problem, my parents simply don't care.

I've found ways though to further my green goals, whenever it comes to lightbulbs I inform my parents in a subtle sort of way about how much money that could be saved in terms of electricity if all these pesky energy draining bulbs were replaced with something that saved money.

That's always what I do, I always lure them in with the money aspect, that really gets to them.

It's tough though when it comes to my father, I don't think he even believes in global warming or other environmental issues where my mom is more neutral, he's also one of the worst spenders I've ever seen and never really thinks about money.

I don't know how to really deal with him, so I don't worry about it, just worry on convincing someone. It's gonna be hard whenever I cut beef off my diet, that guy's so obsessed with beef that he actually reads up on the histories of breed's of cattle.

Really the best solution would be to just handle the problem yourself if action is really desired, that's what I have to do.

Encourage her to purchase energy efficient light bulbs.
Tell her that the longer the lights/heat/computer are left on, the more it costs.

You could even try bribing her by saying something like "I'll take you out for dinner, if you remember to turn the lights off everyday for 2 weeks."

Keep in mind that...
People are stubborn and require incentive to change.
And old habits are hard to break...
