Deep within the heart of the Gaian Mercenary League compound, located below the Department of War and Missions, is a heavy steel door that opens into a 15' x 15' room, built of brushed chromium plates seamlessly interlocked in a geometric Escher-esque pattern. Mounted along its three walls is a wrap-around steel bench, and the room is lit by four small globule lights mounted in each of the ceiling's corners. Within this chamber is a complex keypad, displaying fifty cryptic symbols and numbers. Below that keypad is a single button, which reads "G."

To someone outside of the GML, the elevator would be nothing but a mysterious room. All but the most prestigious guests would learn nothing more than that.

You, however, know exactly what it is. The room is an elevator, powered through the input of a complex security sequence. The elevator leads to a vault known as The Shrine of Alteras, the resting place of Alteras Omega, guardian spirit of The GML.

You enter the elevator, and enter the security code you have been given. The elevator begins its descent immediately, and you steel yourself for what lies below.

Thirty seconds pass and the elevator stops, its doors sliding open to reveal a smooth stone tunnel carved from the rock below GML. Old electric lights strung along the walls fill the hallway with a ghostly artificial light, illuminating the long stretch ahead. One hundred feet down the tunnel, a great span of stone hewn stairs leads deeper into the Earth.

The set of fifty nine stairs end in a circular stone chamber. Opposite of them is a monstrous vault door, constructed of a thousand interlocking segments of a dark, lustrous metal. Ancient runes are cut deep into the stone along the vault door's circumference, and in the door's center is a smooth plate of material that seems to swirl and shift within itself. As you were told, you approach the plate and set the naked skin of your right hand's palm upon it. The material is warm to the touch, and you can feel its flawless, slick surface molding around your fingers and palm.

When you've prepared yourself, you recite the Mercenary Code. Suddenly the plate's material snaps back into a uniform plane, and the runes circling the vault door spill bright blue light across the room. A great rumbling resounds throughout the chamber and your body, as the door's interlocking segments begin to unfold. In a matter of seconds, the vault door has receded into the walls, allowing you to proceed.

The vault's threshold opens into a colossal, spherical room spanning three hundred feet in diameter. A single walkway, suspended by unknown means, leads directly to the chamber's center. As you get closer to the "Shrine's" center, you realize that this place seems... alive; its walls' surface appear to shuffle and adjust themselves incessantly. By the time you reach the heart of this alien sanctum, you are standing on a circular platform suspended at its core. The light around you dims, and for a moment you fear being swallowed in the room’s darkness.

Then, there is a surge of light ahead, and the room is fully illuminated. An entity approaches, made of ghostly blue incandescence. Within this overwhelming, shapeless being, thin gossamer cords flagellate along a series of dark silver shards and vivid dancing lights. Strange noises emanate from its form, but they fall on deaf ears. The creature scintillates with raw power, setting your hair on end. Its presence is awesome, and utterly overwhelming the first time you behold it.

You realize its size as it gets nearer -so colossal it might fill the entire chamber with its presence- yet as it does it appears to recede. The dark shards within show greater detail, and in closer proximity you realize that the foreign bodies are numerous pieces of advanced machinery, suspended within its phantasmal figure.

The creature levitates on the opposite side of the central platform, and as you stare up at Alteras Omega you can feel that is also gazes down upon you. In the sanctity of your mind enters a resonating tone of command, the voice of a master about to school his disciples.

”You are here, Mercenary, and I have been waiting. Declare your intent, and I shall set challenges upon you. Through strife and struggle you shall grow stronger than you were before. That is my will.”

Holograms emerge around you, displaying three clear courses of action you can take.

”Before you begin, make sure you are prepared. I am eager to test your skills, and push you to your limits.”

POST III - The Tests of Alteras
POST IV - Testing Analysis

Greetings Mercenary, and welcome to The GML's new RP Testing and Training experience. For new member and veterans alike, Alteras Omega provides the unique opportunity to not only exercise and improve your abilities in the field, but to do so in a controlled environment, where your characters can grow stronger without fear of permanent damage or death, and each simulation is analyzed to help you improve your RPing skills and RP Rank. Before you begin your first training session, please read all of this information and become familiar with the rules and procedures of the process.

The process is simple, and relatively fast. After choosing one of Alteras' Tests (Detailed in the post BELOW this one), make your first post in this thread detailing which character you are using and the items he/she has on her person, the test you have decided to take as well as specific Simulation Settings (Also described in the post BELOW this one!). This post is a part of your test, even though it isn't a portion of the actual test simulations, because it is a presentation of your character and a face value assessment of your RP skills. Clearly visible in your first post should be a hotlink to your character's full profile, as each method of testing will be comprehensive and will often require you to use your character's abilities in unique and specialized ways

After you have made your first post, you will receive a PM from Ferregar, which will commence each session of your training. From there, your training sessions will proceed via PM, and will after wards be archived for future reference.

During your testing, you must adhere to a specific set of rules. Failure to do so will range in a variety of penalties, from increasing difficulty, to outright test failure. These rules are listed below:

SHRINE OF ALTERAS RULES
(1.) Player munching is not tolerated, and will result in automatic failure of your testing session. For more information about Munching, CLICK HERE.

(2.) Players are not allowed to create the testing environment or NPCs. These are tests of your RP skill, and like any other test, if you're not the teacher, you're not allowed to write it. Violating this rule will result in poor marks in your testing analysis, as well as an increase in test difficulty.

(3.) When being tested, players must give their best effort in being timely with their posts and courteous of the moderators time. An absence of activity for longer than 3 days will result in an end to the test. Analysis will be given, but the test will be considered failed.

(4.) Players may ask OOC questions and advice from the moderator, but clearly distinguish between IC and OOC. using parentheses ((--)). Using any test related information divulged OOC within the test will be considered meta-gaming, and result in failure of your test.

(5.) Consequently, any form of meta-gaming will not be tolerated, and result in failure of your current test.

(6.) Tests will be conducted with fairness and unbias analysis. As such, arguing with test results is strongly advised against, and resorting to any form of petty or rude behavior will result in failure of your test.

(7.) I am only human, and a learning RPer as well. As such, if I overlook something important you've written, please bring it to my attention and I will edit the session accordingly.

(8.) One test per Mercenary at any one time.

(9.) These rules are tentative, and may be changed as the Shrine of Alteras is used more frequently or additional rules/ revisions are deemed necessary. Rule changes will be noted in the thread's title, and players currently taking tests will be notified.

(10.)Place the phrase ALTERAS REGIT ME at the bottom of your post to prove that you have read these rules.

That covers what you need to know about the process. Read the next post to learn about the three Tests of Alteras.

POST IV - Testing Analysis

In the centuries before The Gaian Mercenary League, Alteras trained our predecessors primarily through verbal instruction, visions in dreams and vivid hallucinations on the field. Both The Shrine of Alteras and Alteras Omega itself have been outfitted with some of the world's most advanced technologies, allowing for unparalleled personal training. By filling out additional parameters before each test, you are also able to customize your testing sessions as you see fit. As you advance in RP Rank and character strength, you will have to take increasingly more challenging tests to continue advancing. However, this does not mean you can't simply test yourself for training's sake and to receive additional feedback on your Role Playing.

Read below for details on each of Alteras' Tests, and each Test's customizable parameters.

-==//The Tests of Alteras==-

The Test of Combat
In the Test of Combat, Alteras Omega turns its Shrine into a variety of environment and battlefields, pitting you against enemies collected from its memories, and yours.
How it’s done: The Shrine of Alteras is an advanced terramorphic chamber, with the entirety of its surface constructed of semi-solid plates capable of changing height, width, texture and gradient. In this manner, the Shrine can simulate any form of land-based environment, and then Alteras Omega projects the respective environment’s appearance over the chamber to create a sense of realism. Opponents are constructed from the Shrine’s malleable material, and then animated and operated by the spirit, who serves as their “sentience.” This creates foes that are not only intelligent, but whose cunning, ruthlessness and strategic skills are limited only by Alteras Omega’s discretion. These constructs are then “realized” in the same manner as the environment. It should be noted that, if the guardian spirit deems a Mercenary ready for such encounters, it may pull old foes from his or her memory, to test not only their martial prowess but their strength of will and mental constitution.

Test Parameters: The Test of Combat has several parameters that a Mercenary may decide on themselves. The precise manifestation of each parameter will be decided by Alteras Omega, but these variables give each Mercenary the ability to generally customize their tests. Leaving a parameter unfilled allows Alteras Omega to decide. These parameters are:
---Environment - Pick between specific locales (Field, Marsh, Castle, Mall, etc) or a general template (Medieval, Modern Urban, Modern Rural, Pastoral, etc)
---Number of Enemies - Ranging from 1 to 1,000
---Enemy Weapons - Ranged (Primitive, Medieval, Modern, Modern Advanced, Futuristic), Melee (Primitive, Medieval, Industrial, Modern, Modern Advanced, Futuristic), Improvised, Random, Teacher's Pick (AO will decide)
---Enemy Starting Strategy - Guerilla, Militarized, Aggressive (Light, Mild, Moderate, Zealous, Berserk), Defensive (Light, Mild, Moderate, Fortified, Indomitable), Stealthy, Reactive

The Test of Contract (Mission Simulation)
In the Test of Contract, Alteras Omega creates and then orchestrates a short mission for you to undertake. These tests have great variety and range of difficulty, and the focus on contract missions makes these simulations a must for any Mercenary preparing to accept a contract for the GML.
How It Works:Identical to the Test of Combat, except that the test itself is much more open ended. Each Test of Contract will have a single Primary Mission Objective, and then a small handful of secondary objectives the Mercenary can fulfill for bonus points. However, time will be an element of consideration in these tests, so it’s up to you to balance achieving secondary objectives with insuring that you have enough time to complete the primary objective.

Testing Parameters
---Preferred Mission Type (Reconnaissance, Target Elimination, Clear and Secure, Hostage Situation, Escort, VIP Protection, Demolitions, Teacher’s Pick)
---Environment (Same as the Test of Combat, except weather variables will be implemented)

The Test of Strength
In the Test of Strength, Mercenaries will face Alteras Omega itself, unbridled and without restraint. This is Alteras Omega’s most difficult test, one in which there is no true possibility of victory. It is a test of endurance and fortitude, and shall be scored primarily based on the length at which you can withstand AO’s onslaught, and how you handle each of its attacks.
How It Works: There are no parameters for the Test of Strength. You spar directly against Alteras Omega in its Shrine, with the terrain constantly shifting. This Test is very simple in its explanation. The true challenge comes from its execution.

TESTING ANALYSIS

Alteras Omega's eye is one honed through millenia of experience in war and peace. Once you have completed the Test it gives you, it will meticulously analyze your actions, and then digitize the information so you might gain insight from them. AO's Testing Analysis will consist of several categories, all of which will be "graded" on a 100 point scale, and be followed by specific comments on each. The categories are listed below.

1. COMBAT- Combat will be analyzed on style, effectiveness and strategic maneuvering.

2. CONTROL- Control is a more refined aspect of a Mercenary. Their strength of will when under stress, their ability to work reactively in adversity, and their mental constitution and concentration are all analyzed.

3. PERCEPTION- Perception consists of a Mercenary's insight into battle and other activities, from predicting an enemy's attack through reading their body movement, to determining the most defensible point in a region's terrain, or their ability to retain information.

4. EFFICIENCY- This analyzes a Mercenary's effectiveness in the field. Completing objectives as quickly and effectively as possible will yield high scores.

5. LITERACY- Literacy is the analysis of your literacy as a Role Player.

Constantly strive to do your best on these tests, for higher scores will yield a greater probability of your character growing in strength, and you learning interesting and fun new methods of approach with each of your tests!

Xeg walked across the suspended platforms, striding towards the central platform where he would be greeted by none other than Alteras Omega himself. As he approached, the sensation that he had felt only rarely filled his mind, filling up his consciousness like how it filled up the chamber around him. None knew who Alteras Omega was. Maybe he was an Alien life form, or a traveler from another plane of existence. Perhaps Alteras was a remnant of the Grey Race, the ancient civilization who's now-fallen empire spanned across universes.

Alteras spoke within his mind, shattering the sanctity and privacy of his consciousness. It warned him that he must be prepared. He was prepared. He was going to do things properly this time. All he had on him were his Swords, his Magic, and his Ingenuity. Formidable weapons indeed, when used properly. He grimly thought back to his younger days, in a previous world, when he had done something similar with his Crew. He was much less experienced then, and would have died without their help. There was no threat of death here, but he needed to grow stronger in tis way. To repent on his mistakes in the past.

Three paths were set before him. He chose the first one, the Test of Combat, or rather, the Test of Slaughter. It was time to face his demons, both figuratively and literally. For the terrain, he chose the forty-sixth Layer of the Infinite Abyss, where he had nearly met his downfall before. That particular layer was a Burning Hellscape, where pools of lava formed underneath upturned slabs of earth. Ancient roads existed there, twisted and wrecked from the upheaval of the earth, leading to portals that led you only further in the Abyss. He cracked a grim smile as he punched in the number of enemies that he would be facing in the abyss.

666

Their weapons would be medieval, like they were in his world. They would be as aggressive as berserkers; he should do it right, after all.

After he finshed inputting all the information, he turned to Alteras Omega and said two words. "I'm Ready." He then took a step back and drew his swords, waiting for the trial to begin.

((OoC: I'm afraid I don't know how to make a direct link that brings you right to my character in the Profile page, but I am about 3/4 of the way down on the first page. I am obviously using my main OC, Xeg, who is equipped with only swords and magic. And In case I wasn't making it painfully blunt, I wish to fight demons. If this is acceptable, you may think of you're own demons for me to fight, or if you can't there are demons usable in the Index of Creatures.

Of Course, if you don't want me to fight demons, that's fine too. But I would still like to fight in the burning Hellscape (Think like Oblivion)))
