You may or may not know that there used to be quite a few electric cars around, until a few years back when they were all repossessed by their companies and crushed. they basically erased them from our memories. you may have been lucky enough to re-learn about them from a documentary called "Who killed the electric car?" You can find it online if you want to watch it.
Anyways, I JUST saw a commercial for the new Nissan LEAF 100% Electric Car!! http://www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car/index I'm so hyped! Finally, no more stupid hybrids! I wish Nissan great success and hope there will be more models available soon.
Pass on this great news!

Is it going to be less expensive or more convenient to use than the car Tesla Motors is launching?
I'm not that interested in electric cars because that electricity still comes mostly from coal.

I am so down to try an electric car! (if I can afford it) How does charging the car work? Just plug it into your house? My front porch light runs on solar power and I'm trying to set-up the rest of my place to run the same way, though I will need a backup source. Perhaps I can charge an electric car through solar energy? biggrin

CemeteryPirate I am so down to try an electric car! (if I can afford it) How does charging the car work? Just plug it into your house? Perhaps I can charge an electric car through solar energy? biggrin if you had a lot of panels you could. but yea, the car has an extra device (looks like a gas pump) that you plug into your house. in some areas (san francisco for example) there are electric pumps in town that you can also use for a fee. the car's "upgrade" model has a small solar panel on it that it can use to power the inside electronics.

Any word on what the cost is? First gen electrics are most likely outside of the price range of most people. It'll take a few years before most people have them. It's a start though.

Nice find Mei. I'm actually more a fan of Tesla Motors and the cars they're designing...mostly because the Tesla Roadster is ******** gorgeous XD Seriously. zero emissions. close to 300 miles per charge...Thats more than most tanks of gasoline. may not be great for long trips, but on average most people only drive about 45 miles a day.

it has a range of 100 miles and a max speed of 90mph. That means I couldn't travel with it and it's going to last a max of 90 minutes on the freeway. This isn't a car, this is a child's toy - like something you give your 16 year old daughter for a birth day present because you know road trips are impossible and you don't want her leaving the neighborhood.
obscurous is right - the power is drawn straight from Oil and Coal powered "electric" companies. Unless you have giant solar panels in your front yard and your own personal wind turbine, your "carbon foot print" (a bunch of bullshit) is the same.

in some areas power is generated by Dams of water. you guys are right, but this car is still perfect for any city dweller. i've looked into tesla motors since obscuous mentioned it and they do look a whole lot nicer. this nissan leaf sells for $25280 net, after tax savings, it's $32780 before. it also leases for about 350 a month.
chevy volt (hybrid) sells for $41000 before a federal tax credit

My dad is getting me a scooter. He told me that scooters save you money on gas. I'm going to keep the scooter and work my way up to a motercycle.

The perfect car for me would be a Mustang GT style, repairable skin coating for that new concept car, and hybrid.
The one downfall of having a purely electric car is that it will short circuit if water leaks in by holes or acid rain that causes it to rust. Let's be serious here. Too many hummers on the road and not enough nature to take the hellfire.
Also if the car is purely electric, you risk an attack from an emp. If the government decides to militarize, you're pretty screwed. I suggest you start track running. Like...a mile in 5 minutes. Olympic skills equal higher chances in survival. XD
