The jury seems to be perpetually out on the actual meanings of all these words. Forget all that.

Here's the bit you need to remember. You know what you are, and who you are becoming. What you call it matters not at all, nor will change it one whit. Whatever you call yourself, or how you think of yourself, there will always be those who have their own ideas, and will feel the need to impose them on you, at great length, and whether you want them to or not.

Be strong in yourself. Know your own self. Once you have that, all the preaching and teaching of those who know just enough to have the wrong idea will be only so much noise in the wind. heart

I often wonder if part of the Pagan=Witchcraft comes from the fact that there were several books published in the early years of this revival titled "pagan rites" which are essentially the rites found in most witchcraft rituals.

You will not be able to convince them that they are in fact wrong. Pagans and witches are not the same thing, but the two can work together. A lot of people know that, and obviously, you're one of those people.

The people that you have been talking to on yahoo seem to be very set in their ways, so I would advise you to just sigh, shake your head, and let them be as ignorant as they chose to be. If they wanted to listen to what you have to say, or even examine the possibility that they are wrong, they would ask you where you are coming from and for examples and proof. "People are stupid, they will believe anything either because they want to believe it's true or because they are afraid it's true". I've met a number of people that believed Pagan=witch and some people who even thought that Wicca was a language. I've been accused of being possessed by a demon as well and my mother wont even let me in her house if I'm wearing something "witchy" cause she feels it'll "curse" her and her home. It's sad really. My best advice though is to not fight it because you will not win. You will just waste energy on people who are doing everything within their power to suck you dry.

Quote:
Wicca is a tradition of Witchcraft that was brought to the public by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s. There is a great deal of debate among the Pagan community about whether or not Wicca is truly the same form of Witchcraft that the ancients practiced. Regardless, many people use the terms Wicca and Witchcraft interchangeably. Paganism is an umbrella term used to apply to a number of different earth-based faiths. Wicca falls under that heading, although not all Pagans are Wiccan.

The term “pagan” (derived from the Latin paganus, which translates roughly to “hick from the sticks”) was originally used to describe people who lived in rural areas. As time progressed and Christianity spread, those same country folk were often the last holdouts clinging to their old religions. Thus, “pagan” came to mean people who didn’t worship the god of Abraham.

So, in a nutshell, here's what's going on. All Wiccans are witches, but not all witches are Wiccans. All Wiccans are Pagans, but not all Pagans are Wiccans. Finally, some witches are Pagans, but some are not.

Hopefully this will help clear the air up for some of us. This was pulled from about.com on Paganism/Wicca. I do, however, do not totally agree with the last line. Not all Wiccans are witches. You can have the beliefs of a wiccan and perhaps light a candle here and there to honor a deity or person, however, a witch is someone who practices magick EVERYDAY. This means cleansing your altar, divining, meditating, doing rituals, etc. Really, it depends on the part of the world you are from. Some people get offended when you call them Wiccan, some get offended being referred to as Pagan. And some hate being call Witches. Genuinely, I believe the biggest different between the three is the geographical locations and the type of people.

Here's the link if anyone's interested:

Paganism/Wicca at About.com

There are Christians who also practice witchcraft. Do not let them fool you. They still follow the traditional Christian beliefs and some do use such divining tools as Wiccans/Pagans/Witches, such as altars, divination tools, etc. There will be those who are ignorant and think those of us who practice things a little differently than them will think otherwise, like we're devil worshippers. Like everyone else has been saying, ignore them. We know we are out seeking the same thing everyone else is, we just seek for it slightly different, but yet in the same sense, the same way as everyone else.
