Okay so I was in the yahoo Christian chat because well I was really bored at work, and normally there are some thought provoking questions and debates despite all the spam.

Anyways there two let's say overly zealous people who insisted that not only is witchcraft a sin (one of them randomly brought it up) but because I told them according to the Hebrew version it's not, that I'm a witch. I kept trying to tell them that I've never practiced witchcraft so I'm not a witch, however I'm a pagan. The other one then said that pagan=witch.

They later went to say that I was a demon, or that I was possessed by a demon and needed to be exorcised. And when I got back in at home, they said I was going to preach witchcraft. o.o

So how do people come to the conclusion that pagan=witch? How can I combat the hysteria other than placing on ignore? And how the hell can someone be demon possessed? o.o

I think people are either uneducated or ignorant- or they may believe that the Bible has a passage that states if you're rebelling, you're doing witchcraft, it's in 1 Samuel I think.

To add: when it comes to being possessed it depends on what they think possession is.

There are some people that won't be convinced no matter what you say. Those people you have to put on ignore. Did you ask them why they thought that was though? Why they think you're possessed and why they think you're a witch?

It was more than likely because I didn't agree with what they said. I mean this is the same crowd, where I'll defend the underdog like say Muslims and they'll call me a Muslim. Because in their head they think I am of that group. While in reality, I'm not, I just don't like people insulting other people over things like religion.

They thought I was being possessed by an actual demon and needed to see a priest so he could pour holy water on me and hit me with a Bible. I'm like umm...you need to see a shrink.

They even told me that I should burn cause I'm a witch..

And I want to be a psychologist..

I think you knew the people you were dealing with were in the wrong when they called you a Muslim for defending Muslims.
There is not much to do besides ignore because it is nearly impossible to convince the ignorant that they are wrong.

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. If you knew that these were the kinds of people you were dealing with, why did you seek the advice of others?

Truth be told, I didn't know that this person would stoop that low. I befriended him and I thought he was well sane. When he went on his tangent, I was wrong. -shrugs- It happens. I just never thought anyone could stoop that low really.

And I'm not asking for advice. I asking what distinction, if there is any between pagan and witch. How both are different. And if there is any way to combat this ignorance.

Pagan is anyone who is not Christian, Jewish, Muslim and perhaps Baha'i., and a witch is someone who practices witchcraft- and can be a member of any of those religions.

That's why I'd rather just say that I'm not religious to most people. It helps avoid things like that. But I'm sorry he reacted like that.

I don't think you can correct someone like that. They apparently have it set in their minds that pagan = witch, and as much as you don't like it, especially now, they won't listen to you about it being different.
It probably isn't so much due to pagans being witches, as much as pagans aren't Christians therefore they work with the devil, so therefore they're witches. Because witchcraft is against God.

This is the kind of thing people talk about when they say someone "dosn't know enough to know they don't know enough." Some people just think that if they don't know something, like say the difference between witchcraft and paganism, it dosn't exist.

As for the bible thing, most versions that single out witches, or other groups for that mater, were written by political types to enforce their own view and plans on others. The King James version is well know to have been re-interpited for just that reason, because some witches at the time were protesting his warmongering.

Most people conect witch with pagan because its conected in the media. Any "pagan" that is on tv is called a witch and visa-versa....at lest from what i've seen. Some people don't realize that witchs are only one type of pagan. As for the people you were talking to, some people just can't be told they are wrong...they just can't grasp it......lol

Perhaps the only way to combat that kind of ignorance is with persistence.
We can only tell people they're wrong, it's up to them to believe it.

After all, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

Most people are just afraid. They're afraid of anything other than what they've grown to know, so it's easier to condemn others and say they're wrong than to be open-minded.

Don't take it personally. Many people are just ignorant. Though it is not an excuse for their rude behavior, they should not be given more value or effort than they deserve.

There is a line in the Bible about Christians being "crafty as serpents, as harmless as doves." Really wish they'd take that to heart. Because, all I'm seeing, most times, is vitriol. Just sayin'.

The Hebrew version of the Bible doesn't hold witchcraft to be a sin? Could you explain this more to me, I would love to understand this.
