I love the simpsons, but I tend not to take them too seriously (then again, I also love Futurama, & Family Guy). Not that I could watch the videos, gotta love area limitations.
Although I must admit some of my favourite bits are making fun of my CofE upbringing (I love Flanders ;D). I feel if you can't laugh at some of the silliness in your religion, what's the point?
Most Catholics I know seem very good at this...most of them are Irish though, so that could be a factor. They're very good at finding the light in most situations.

I find the Simpsons hilarious, they always do this type of stuff, though Family Guy is much worse in that category. I found it funny when my bible teacher mentioned it as being and unholy show, lol. Me and my brothers were cracking up with everybody in the back of the class when he mentioned it.

Anyway it's much better than silly "Don't Mess with the Zohan". That was an hour or so of continuous headdesking.

That movie was terribly racist. Even I felt a little offended by it. (They guy was gelling his hair with Hummus eek )
Ewwwwwww.......

I just watched the episode. I miss when the Simpsons used to actually be funny, which hasn't been for over a decade. Sigh...

Anywho, you shouldn't be too offended over it because, well, that's kind of what the writers want, I think. The Simpsons tends to go out of its way to be offensive. The episode where the Simpsons go to Japan was banned in Japan for quite a while and there were two episodes which weren't allowed to be shown in Germany because they implied that all Germans/Austrians are Nazis. At some point in time, the Simpsons has probably offended everyone. I'm sure Bumblebee Man offends some Mexicans, Groundskeeper Willy offends some Scottish people, Reverend Lovejoy offends some Christians, pretty much all the female characters except Lisa offend some women, Smithers offends some gay people, and so on and so on and so on. The thing is, you just have to remember that it's a satirical show meant to make people laugh. It's when The Simpsons and shows like it are at their most offensive is when we see if how much of a sense of humor we have about ourselves. So, personally, I disliked the episode because I thought it just wasn't funny, but I wouldn't say there's ever been anything on the Simpsons that's truly offended me because it's kind of hard to take anything said on a cartoon show completely seriously...

Anywho, I found a couple of blogs talking about this specific episode - both the good and the bad aspects of it - if anyone's interested. 1 2 3 4

I like how one of the producers of the Simpsons actually said, "It'll be a show that all faiths can come together and be offended by"...

I finally saw the episode. It was a little more offensive than usual, but not overly so. I still found it funny.

Shadows-shine
I've always thought the Simpsons was a stupid show to begin with, so I never watched it. And I do agree that is incredibly lame.

I saw that episode, I thought it was pretty good. They always use satire, as a form of humor. I don't think anything is sacred to them. (It's not so funny when the satire falls on you)

Anyways, one thing I noticed in the episode was that the Jewish people didn't believe in hell. I actually had to Google it, to confirm. I have to say that I much prefer the Jewish afterlife to the Christian one. You love god for god, rather then to avoid eternal torture.

The Simpson's has always been an educational show. I've learned a lot from them. (However, you must separate the stereotypes from the facts)

I agree.

Even Family Guy and South Park.

Although I feel The Simpsons to be of better quality.

I agree with both of you on all points.

In Medias Res IV
Did anyone see the episode where they went to Israel?

My friend was going on about how funny it was, so I decided to watch it.

It was the biggest piece of garbage I have seen in a long time.

Geeze, could they get any more offensive to Xians and Jews?

In fact, it wasn't even so much offensive as it was incredibly lame.

Link to the episode.

It's what the media is trying to consider "funny" now. Apparently it's hilarious to joke about slavery, World War II, etc.

I don't understand why the would want to make them funny. I feel this way about Family Guy. Since when did ***** become funny?

I didn't know it was hilarious to joke about the challenged, make racist jokes and everyone have a good laugh, and make jokes on how Hitler is such a great guy.

It's called Dark Humour love, it's simply the way people cope with terrible things, by making light of them. Haven't you ever seen MASH, or Blackadder goes Fourth?

I will admit certain comedy borders on blue rather than black, but it's nothing to get worked up over.

One of my favourite comedian's is Billy Connolly, and he's got quite the foul mouth, and not-so-PC themes...I just love his take on wildebeest & lions in the Serengetti xd

Kind of strange how everyone was so offended by this. I'm Israeli, and I found it to be pretty funny, as all of my Israeli friends who have watched this.
I think the best humor is based on a little shred of the truth and some exaggeration. It would only make people uncomfortable if they're either very sensitive or unwilling to acknowledge the slight shreds of truth. There was nothing false about the sign that said "your tax dollars at work", although maybe it wasn't the most pleasant thing for everyone to see.
That's what makes it good humor in my view.

I've loved the Simpsons ever since I was little, and I'm not religious either, so I liked that episode just as much as any of their other episodes. Truth be told, the Simpsons is probably much less offensive in general than Family Guy or South Park. After all, the Simpsons is PG, while Family Guy is TV-14 and South Park is MA.
