Everyone has a right to like what they like, but it is a whole other thing for someone to outright tell another person they are wrong for it.
I've experienced the same thing. People telling me that I am stupid for liking anime.

I don't find weeaboo to be an offensive term, really.
People don't understand what it really means. Its someone who wants to be asian, and acts asian. Pretty much the asian equivalent to a Jiggaboo (black person wanting to be white) I simply have interests in asian culture, and have no desire at all to be asian.

Oh. I was about to say that Koreans have a good reason to dislike Japanese but than I realized you wrote they preferred "Koreans" as in the media related to Korea which is actually quite understandable. Korean things are generally more within the mainstream trend, or popular at least while Japan is more for those whom people would consider outcasts and such (Nobody really got into actual Japanese fashion but Lolita, ETC) - Just an example.
I'm Japanese but I have got to say. K-Pop kicks J-Pop's butt both in the way they are catchy, outfits, and the quality or so I've noticed. J-Rock and K-Rock, I'm not so sure. I like both Japanese and Korean though, though not in the sense I assume most people like Japanese things in this thread.
