I think if I just ate normal meals and drank water I'd be fine, but I always wander over to the kitchen and eat whatever I can find. (Well, not anything, just the things I like.) And once I start, I can't stop!

It depends on what you eat. I eat 5, 6, 7 times a day, but I eat 100-200 calorie snacks and 300-400 calorie meals. It's absolutely fine, in fact it's better, to snack as long as you eat the right things.

Obviously, sugar is not the thing because it won't feel you up and will actually make you feel hungrier. If you want to eat a treat, do it with a meal, preferably lunch because you don't want it to be the last thing you eat for the day.

The best snacks are fruits and vegetables because you can eat A LOT of them without getting too many calories. When I first choose to eat carrots instead of chips, I actually had to force myself to finish the 50 calories worth of carrots that I had chosen because I just felt so full so quickly.

If you still want to "sweetness" of sugar, then fruit is definitely the way to go. Throw some blueberries or grapes into a bowl and it will be like snacking on sugary candy. Melons are great for a soft, juicy feel. Slice up an apple and you can feel like you are eating chips only a little sweeter or more sour if you prefer that kind of apple. Oranges have a little bit more of a sour feel if you like sour candy. Bananas are a nice light snack that fills you up pretty well. Peaches and plums have such a great flavor, you won't even want something else.

The point is, no matter what your taste is, there is a fruit out there to fit it. Pick three or four different fruits that you like for variety. Also, if you choose a couple, you can usually get great prices as different fruits go in and out of seasons.

If you absolutely can't snack on fruits and vegetables, you can make a bunch of healthy snacks that you like once a week or so and then leave them in the fridge. Like, make a bunch of half sandwiches (whatever kind you like) or make a bunch of eggs once a week and put them in the fridge for microwaving when you feel hungry.

There are hundreds of different ways to avoid snacking, so don't feel discouraged if you don't think any of these ways will help.

Do things with your hands so that you can't be putting food in your mouth. (reading doesn't count) or remove yourself from areas where it's easy for you to get up and wander into the kitchen. I find staying in my bedroom with a note on the door saying that I can have tea and nothing else works fine, because I have to open the door to get out.

Other than that, if you know you snack at a certain time of day or at a certain task, do that task elsewhere. I snack at home when I have nothing to do so I go for walks, or better yet pack up what I'm doing and go to a coffee shop down town to write, draw or just generally be away from food that I can eat easily. I pack a small healthy lunch and hit the town with my camera sometimes too.

Keep in mind that celery (by itself) is free! It's almost entirely fiber, and the few calories it does have are burned simply by chewing and digesting it. Maybe stock up on that for when you know you're just wanting to eat for the sake of eating, not for actually needing to fuel your body.

Do you snack because you are bored? I had that problem, and I still occasionally do but I am trying to break the habit.
On all the snack shelves (I do eat snacks with my meals but I am on a stick 2000 calorie a day diet) I have sticky notes saying how much weight I lost and how much more to go.

But when I am feel food-anxiety I have a journal that lists about 50 things to do instead that would take up just as much time, and even more, than eating a snack. Here are a few from the list:
1) Paint my nails - and if I really want to eat do a whole pedi and mani
2) Get on Gaia to actually talk, not lurk
3) Video games (I would say video but I need my hands to be busy)
4) Homework ( I know, its ridiculous)
5) Read a book
6) Call a friend and ask if they want to get out

And when you can't think of anything to do... DRINK WATER UNTIL YOU DON'T WANT TO SNACK!

Note: I want you to know that I am saying you shouldn't snack. Eating small meals are healthy. I am just saying in case you want to over-snack.

Keep track of what you're snacking on then look through and see what's causing you problems. Then try making a lost of good healthy snacks you can snack on when you have to. Or stop yourself before you go and snack. Leave a note on the things you want to snack on that have you question whether you should or not.

if you are snacking then your not eating enough through out the day. try eating 6-7 meals a day, every 2-3 hrs. the meals should be about 200-300 calories. this will also help you lose weight. by doing this it tells the brain to tell the body that their is going to be constant supply of fuel and it doesn't need to store fat as a safety measure.

Water water water. Maybe you could get those packs to flavor your water that are only about five calories.

Which reminds me. I need to go out and get more of those.

I'll keep you my dirty little secret...

I have that problem too.

It's not like I'm particularly craving anything, but I always want to be eating. I just love eating, and my parents say it's probably an addiction of sorts.

I solve my problem by chewing on gum. It's about 5 calories a piece, and it's flavourful, plus it keeps your mouth busy. I find that mint gum has the bonus of giving your mouth that 'clean' feeling that makes you reluctant to eat and ruin that feeling.

...don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret.

"What is normal for one is not normal for another."

The only reason I would stop snacking is if I ran out of money for snack machines (when I'm at school) and if I was too lazy to get up and get more munchies (when I'm at home).

"Therefore, there is no such thing as "normal", is there?"

I completely understand what you're going through. I love to snack myself. It's gotten so bad in the last year that I'll even chew on things I don't particularly like, just because. These are a few things that have helped me start to reign in the urges:

1. Exercise.
When I get in a nice long workout (I run) I don't feel hungry in the least. This allows me to occupy myself with other things and not think about food too much.

2. Staying hydrated.
I always make sure I drink a good amount of water. Soda does not quench thirst, but it does taste better. I usually have both a diet soda and bottled water on hand. Not feeling thirsty helps me not think of possibly being hungry, and taking attention away from my mouth by both controlling my hunger and staying hydrated helps me avoid the kitchen.

3. Saltine crackers, 100% fruit bites and veggies.
If I absolutely NEED to snack, and I'm neither hungry nor thirsty, I've been trying to go for these things. They satisfy me and they don't interfere with the progress I make with my exercise.

4. Everyday activity.
When I'm lazy, just sitting around watching t.v., I usually start to munch. Doing chores, playing games on any system or computer, entertaining my cats, and other regular daily activities keep me occupied. It busies the mind and keeps my thoughts from drifting too solidly towards eating. All this is apart from my workouts.

5. Plan meals.
I generally eat whatever I find when I get up and before I go to bed, as real meals. I've been forcing myself to sit down and think about everything in the fridge and cupboards, decide what I want at the time as well as for later, how heavy the meals are, how healthy they are, and if they would render all the miles I plan to run useless or if they will aid in my weight loss.
