Burning Crimson The Iron Magus chouthenekoarmyveteran The Iron Magus Burning Crimson I think it became Site Feedback precedent. ...meaning? confused That due to a large ammount of complaints Christ was officialy removed from Christmas. In other words. People wanted to take over a holiday and change it's name. TIM, its the movement your with. People took the name and decided to take it apart. Ridiculous as it may seem, thats what happened. They renamed a holiday because they didn't agree with the religion. Or rather, thats what I take Crim means. Once again, that's completely not true. Xmas = Christmas. X means Christ. Xmas is pronounced like Christmas. It's not a renaming, it's an abbreviation--albeit an archaic one. I'd have to disagree with you there boss. Well... sorta.
While I concede that Xmas and Christmas are pretty much the same thing, I say that the meaning of Christmas itself has changed with time. I think Christmas is now largely celebrated as a commercialized version, not so much a religious holiday.Oh, no argument there. Of course Christmas is mostly commercialized now. But that has nothing to do with the name. That's all I'm saying.

Who, what, when, how, why......I really can't say that I'm surprised that Gaia did what they did. But I'm sure that their reasoning was good for it. I am a bit peeved that they changed the name but whatever. Not the end of the world.

Ok...Renaming a Christmas tree is stupid. If they care so much why not just put up items for all the other winter holidays?
As for the origin of Christmas. It really was a pagan holiday that the Christans took and changed to the birthday of Christ as a way to get more followers. Sorry to offend but it's the truth.
As for Santa...he was invented by the Coca-Cola guys as a form of advertising...
There. ^-^

Coca-Cola didn't invent Santa, they just helped to popularize his current image, which already existed at the time.

Even Santa originally came from Christianity, in the form of St. Nicholas, who would sneak around on Christmas Eve and deliver presents to children.

X-mas is what remains when you remove Christ from Christmas... A spirit of giving and good will towards men, and something that the religiously unaffiliated can still celebrate... If people keep complaining I'm just going to tell them I celebrate the Persian Mithras Festival, and get wasted and fornicate saturnalia style. Christ was born in like, June, anyway. The church simply wanted to replace local traditions they felt were unsavory, but too deep seated to be removed entirely. Cuatela Even Santa originally came from Christianity, in the form of St. Nicholas, who would sneak around on Christmas Eve and deliver presents to children. Yeah, what ever happened to Black Pete? I swear, it's like they're trying to make the holiday REGIONALLY APPROPRIATE or something.

It's how you celebrate and what you mean by it that matters, not what you call a holiday.

I really didn't even notice it until I saw this thread....and I agree with the general idea of "How is a tree offensive if it's called a 'Christmas tree'". I mean, pine trees in December, everyone knows what that means... I have yet to see anyone raise the issue. I can see it now...
"They made us pledge allegiance to the flag, and now we have to call this tree a 'Christmas' tree?!? BLASPHEMY!!!" Let's see how that holds up in court.
(and yes, i know that the forcing of the pledge was removed because jehovah's witnesses felt they shouldnt pledge to anything but God. Heck, I'm of the same opinion, even though I'm not a JW. and I know the two topics are unrelated.)
Actually, I suppose they aren't because it boils down to this: Don't force your religious opinions on me, and I won't force mine on you. Taking the preceeding statement into consideration, I don't think calling a Christmas tree a Chritmas tree is forcing anyone's anything in any way. That's just the name of it. Its like the candlestand with the 7 (11? somone help me out here, I'm not Jewish...and no offense to anyone who is) candles in it; everyone knows what that means, or at least has a general idea of what it's supposed to represent (meaning Jewish holidays). It's like taking the...how shall I say...."dark" costumes out of halloween because they insinuate Devil worshipping. It's stupid.
I guess what I ran around in circles trying to say is this: Taking the "Christmas" out of "Christmas tree" is... well, maybe I DONT know what I'm trying to say. But I think I've come up with a genius way to say it.
Valentine's day is offensive to those of us who are single, and especially those who are recently single. Yet taking the hearts and whatnot out of Valentine's day doesn't change much.
and by the way, seeing as how i am STILL having problems with the Quote button (i still think it's the school browser), i can't use it, but I like what Kegan said about the Persian Mithras Festival. That made me laugh

My ex who is Muslim calls it a Christmas tree. They actually celebrated Christmas on a very small scale. It mostly involved them getting some stuff for school and some cash.

Muslims actually believe in christ, they just don't believe he was absolute... or something like that.
Kinda like how Christians and Muslims both believe in Moses.
Kinda very unlike how I believe in LIZARDS FROM SPACE! Wait, no I don't.
