Allrighty so, I need all the input I can get on this::
Our band has successfully become so small that we cant make a show without embarrasing ourselves. We got down to 33 people in AA. So anywho our band director went from saying
"NO MORE MARCHING BAND!!"
to
"were going to have two kinds of band. competitive and cirricular. Its going to be the same show but the people in competitive will be in competitions and the people in cirricular will only have to come for the football games...but theyll be on the edges of the show so it doesnt look retarded."

...what??
Im a tad confused.
Has anyone's school ever done this before? Or been confronted with anything like this? Because i cant see this working out too well. especially with the meager level of dedication we have right now.

i assume its gonna eb like the drumline at my skool this next year.

were gonna have a drumline A and a drumline B

A: drumline for marching season only
B: everybody who wants to do drumline will prepare for winter season

so ya....prob ur competing band will be just that, a competing band, and your curricular band will be everybody playing for football games and such

why can't you just go down a class?
like, class B or something

past years my band has only had around 35 people and we were in class B and C

Our school has an line of alternates (called A-Line) that's similar to what you're talking about. Basically, they march at football games (usually in the back), but not the games the week of a competition or at the comp. They still go to contests, but they're generally stuck helping pit or moving other equipment. Then, they stand at the front at parade rest and help get everything off the field after the show's over. Other than that, they are there in case something happens during the season and one of the starting line-up members can't march.

... what??? None of this is making any sense to me! My schools problem is we have a crappy band director! Does this make any sense: If one person cant memorize their music then NO ONE gets to march??? How whacked up is that?!?!

Your Director should just move you down a division. If you were in AA, then you would move down to B or A, right? What state association are you in? In NCBA, which is what we're in, the divisions are controlled by number, I think. We have 100+ and we're in AA.

does your district go by size of band or size of school(pop. of school)

my district does it by size of school so we have no choose in what class we are in.

That's stupid!!! Our director has us to memorization tests every friday, and if you don't have it memorized, you don't get to march. Having the whole band not march is ridiculous... Unless your band is tiny, or you have SET marching spots, like your spot can't be filled by a replacement...

i think there are one or two bigger bands that do something like that (broken arrow does it i think)
from what ive heard they do it by grade level.

personally i think its stupid to do with small bands

and dont feel too bad about your size... theres a band weve played a football game with that had 21 people in it... which is more than they had last year (now they have a gaurd... 2 ppl)
