I get that ring around my lips too, and I am the only one in my section that gets it (im second chair).
my BD from summer school said that i needed to stop pressing my trumpet so hard against my lips because that was what was causing me to get that ring around my lips. Yes, it stops the blood flow.
I may be second chair, but when it comes to playing high notes, it is usually harder for me than for the other like, 9 trumpets to play them. I guess thats because i press my trumpet up to my lips. I really need to stop that.

I play euphonium, and I used to get it all the time. I was pressing the instrument WAY too hard trying to get notes out of the upper register. Just relax when you play, and don't pull the horn to the face as you attempt higher notes. Use more air, don't be afraid to, it's free, and no one complains when you take more than you need.
If it hurts, sore, or itchy, it might be an allergic reaction, though I've never seen it. If you have another mouthpiece made by another company, or can maybe borrow one from someone else, try it for about a week and see if it goes away.
I'm sorry you're lips have a ring. It's not the end of the world though. Playing euphonium sitting down, when I stand up, it looks like I peed on myself, when it's really just the condensation building up on the spit valves and falling in my lap...Long live the wet crotch!

carmex is good, but it's messy. Try Burt's Bees. I play Tuba, and I get dry and cracked lips all the time. When I switched to Burt's Bees [it's lip balm] it not only helped my lips but when I play it doesn't get everywhere.

i get the red ring too. it's definately normal. it goes away pretty quick most of the time but i think some people that have been playing for a while get it somewhat permanently.
i walked out of band one day and my friend asked 'are you wearing lipstick??' xd
